Adjusting to the new school was a big challenge for the student body officers this year. Many new problems were added to the already domineering ones, especially when assemblies were scheduled and the auditorium wasn ' t completed, or when they planned a pep rally and found that the paint on the floor was still wet. Even though they were put through a lot, they came up with a great year. Ron Bennion President Shane Berger Executive V.P. Garry Jeppesen Legislative V.P. Representatives of clubs and classes made up the Student Senate. These members looked forward to an active year of finan- cial worries, assembly dates, and activity scheduling. Compli- cations such as: classes having identical plans, clubs wanting money to pay their debts, or extending the deadline for class assemblies, plagued their weekly meetings. STUDENT SENATE 13 1 SENIORS . . . obtain the splendor of achievement. Class of 74, look to this clay, be- cause it is a day of vision and remembrance. Think of goals that can be achieved, and recall fond memories of the past. Recall trials and tribulations of being a lowly sophomore. Recollect the relief of becoming a junior and actually being able to associate with the mighty seniors. Never forget the grand feeling as you march up the aisle to receive your diploma. Look therefore to this day, for today you will receive the splendor of a- chievement. 16 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS lolene Wiseman Vardell Curtis Brad Liljenquist Kristi Peterson Reporter Vice President President Secretary Tf Patricia Arnold Tissue Paper Kim Atkinson Spreads Sunshine |aci ie Bailey Artistically Inclined leff Bailey Curly Kirk Bailey Squirt Fred Baird Blue Baird Connie Barnes I didn ' t make that one up. YOU ' RE A MADISON BOBCAT . . . FOOTBALL SCORES 1 The 1973 football team brought a new era to Bobcat football, with its six wins and tour loss season. It had been since 1962 that a Madison team had won six games. The explo- sive Bobcat Offense led the E.I.C. and scored 222 points; only one other team in Madison ' s 44-year football history scored more points in a single season. It also was the first time that Madison beat Bonneville and Blackfoot in the same season. All the hard work, dedi- cation, and total commitment paid big divi- dends and these principles should continue to pay in the future years of Bobcat football. Coach Gerald Critten 60 FOOTBALL WE WILL KICKOFF TO VICTORY! BEAT ' EM! The J.V. team had a great year as they averaged close to 30 points a game and posted a 5-2 mark. The two losses came at the hands of Shelley and Bonneville who played a number of varsity juniors. The offensive attack was led by QB Roger Balling with great running and passing. Long yardage was made many times by tailback Scott Rhees. Fullbacks Kerry Young and Grant Nelson were always good for four yards. The line led by Stucki, Stewart, Bates, Neilson, and Christensen provided great blocking. Erickson, Marlor, Smith and Taylor caught many exciting and long passes for TD ' s. De- fensive specialists were Barner, Anderson, Bailey, and Zollinger. The defense held several teams to minus yardage. The I.V. ' s received much valuable experience and all 27 sophomores stayed out the whole season and should continue to be winners on the varsity in the next two years. — Coach Crittenden FOOTBALL 61 ■.■■■■■J.lif . ■.V . ' ■VARSITY CHEERLEADERS: Brenda Seeley, Cheer Queen: lanet Waite, Beth Rigby. Julie Nef, and Kathryn Hoffman. I CHEERLEADERS ... no energy shortage here. Cheerleaders had no worry of a gasoline shortage because they ran on pure Madison Bobcat Power! Like batteries they stored up the power, and when they were turned on, they practically exploded with energy and enthu- siasm. With the red and the white flying high, Bjenda in the lead, and the school supporting them all the way, they led us through a year full of excitement and spirit. CHEERLEADERS 63 BASKETBALL . . . trials, triumphs, victories, and defeats. BASKETBALL 65 KEITH ROBISON: Keith provided some of the stretch needed this year in leading Madison in both points and rebounds. Being a Jr. starter, Keith will be a great asset to next year ' s team. ROBERT MATTHEWS: Rob had a great season this year despite his ankle sprain early in the season. Rob started many games and will be back next year to provide Madison some added support. ROGER DALLING: Madison ' s Sophomore guard showed us that Sophomores do have some place in the world. Roger gained some added experience and should be great in the next two years. RICHARD NEILSON: Dicks height and rebound strength added much to Madison ' s effort this year. Dick will be back next year for an even greater year. RODNEY GROVER: Rod ' s work under the basket and on the boards provided the muscle for Madison. His high shooting percentage and rebound power helped the team a great deal. RYAN TIBBITTS: Ryan showed Madison some good ball-handling this year and provided that needed height on the guard line. Ryan scored well and added to the rebound power. 66 BASKE TBALL I SHANE BERGER: Shane consistently came from the bench to grab rebounds and points. Shane did a great job in providing backup support for Madison. STEVE DANIELSON: Steves scrappy defense and fine offensive play showed he has the stuff for next year. Steve should help Madison on the guard line in 75. SHELBY BEATTIE: Shelby did a fine job this year in providing Madison with support from the bench. Shelby could always be counted on for a quick 2 ' when needed. SAM WICOCK: The limited action that Sam saw showed that Sam could handle the ball well. He should show great promise next year. t GARTH OAKEY: Garth showed that height makes no difference if you ' ve got the spirit. At 5 ' 6 Garth could zip in and out for a quick 2 . COACH HOLMAN: Coach ' s years of experience paid off for a great season this year. With next year ' s stock he ought to provide a winner next year. Varsity wrestlers under the direction of Coach Gerald Critten- den began their training in November to give Madison a good show- ing in the sixth district meets. Varsity men included: Doug Weick, Fred Baird, Doug Patterson, Ron Ricks, Brent Hardin, David Rasmussen, Dan Moulton, and Andy Fujimoto. Also participating were four junior high boys, Brian Ricks, Steve Crane, Bill Evans, and Randy Ricks. Robert Hicken, Byron Bates, John Wilcox, and Eric Ames com- posed the junior varsity team. Doug Patterson and Randy and Brian Ricks represented the team at the state meet in Boise. Coaches Greg Shephard and Bruce Parker assisted the team. Doug Patterson. 138 lbs. 70 WRESTLING Madison ' s mat men had a good showing with thirty-five boy grappling for winning holds. Three men represented us at State Brian Ricks, 98 lbs., Randy Ricks, 129 lbs., and Doug Pattersoi 138 lbs. They spent three days in Boise where each won some matcl es and Brian qualified for National Freestyle convention. 72 WRESTLING BASEBALL . . . bats a high popularity average. Batter Up! It was time again for the baseball season. Before the games began, the team had to get their heads together to come up with the right men for the right positions. Mitts had to be broken in, batting styles warmed up and the throwing arms needed massaging with analgesic. BASEBALL 73 74 BASEBALL BASEBALL 75 SOCCER . . . where the teams are armed with legs. Soccer started early in the spring, as the ded- icated players began practicing cross field, and free kicks, along with fundamentals such as heading, trapping, and passing. Many shouts and exclamations that could be understood only by the players themselves echoed about the field: Great save! Good cross! Head it! Shoot it! Shoot it! Madison ' s tracksters used all their spare time working out on the field at Ricks ' College, running to beat records and jumping to obtain unbeatable heights. Even during the rainy season, sprinters used the new gym facilities to good advantage. Their efforts jumped the popularity of the Madison ' s spring sport scoreboard. 78 TRACK .1 TRACK 79 GOLF . . . has the spring swings. Madison ' s amateur Palmers, Nicholauses and Millers hit the green as the last of the patches of ice melted from the putting surfaces. Every club and class started the school year by racking their brains to come up with a fantastic float based around Yesterday Once More , so the judges would be stunned into giving them first place. Class skits were presented followed by the announcement of the Homecoming Royalty. To highlight the evening, the annual bonfires were lighted and the seniors took all . September 21, 73 was the day of Homecoming parade and football game. Bobcat fans were ecstatic when the South Fremont Cougars were soundly thrashed. Next night, deep blue set the perfect stage for the Homecoming Dance theme song, Yesterday Once More . All that can be said about Homecoming 73 is that it was truly the best ever. Even if the Lettermen weren ' t faster than a rolling 0 , able to leap capital T s in a single bound or change snake back into rake, they were a tough club to beat. Observing the Lettermen ' s Olympics, there was no doubt that these jox were jacks of all trades. Armed with their concession stand and their pro- jects they earned money to buy equipment for the athletic department. Altogether they provided general excitement for the school. Have book, we ' ll stamp, might have been an accurate quote for the Library Staff. They were thrilled to have a new library, although it meant a lot of work to re- organize it. Books had to be shipped from the old high school, also reshelved and refiled. Now that every- thing is arranged, it is a better library than ever. Another day for the of- fice staff begins: Could we come into your rooms for the morning announce- ments, please? As the communication gap widens, the Spanish Club didn ' t help anything by speaking an entirely different language. They added spice to their knowledge by learning customs and traits of the Spanish speaking countries. Has anyone ever heard of Spanish caroling? The Spanish Club has. Members were considered as the secretarial pool of Madison. Meeting every fourth Thursday, guest speakers were invited and field trips to offices were arranged so they could understand the duties of stenographers, bookkeep- ers, and typists and learn about the various machines and how to operate them. The purpose of the club was to better prepare the students for working in an office. 122 OEA SCHOLASTIC . . . brain over brawn. Define Yggdrasil. Who but the Scho- lastic Team would know that? Once more, the Math Club was back at the old grindstone. In competition against the other schools of the dis- tricts, these human computers could whip out an answer in a matter of seconds. As far as this group was concerned, even Trig, wasn ' t a stumbling block. They might even be considered as the whiz kids of Madison. SCIENCE . . . mad- scientists of Madison High. In the Madison laboratory could be found a cluster of plastic aproned, goggled-eyed, Homo sapiens performing experiments of all descriptions Occasionally, a cloud of green smoke would rise above a test tube and one of these strange-looking creatures would be bobbing up and down, seemingly in joy, realizing that this was another meeting of the Science Club, one would be relieved to know that these weren ' t men from outer space, but high school students gaining more knowl- edge of the properties of science.
