1951 idonictn EDITOR ROY BINGO ASSOCIATE EDITOR BUSINESS MANAGER AAYRTIE LOU MORTENSEN LOREA JACKOMSEN ADVISERS ROBERT M. KERR MRS. NORVAL BIGLER PUBLISHED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY OF MADISON HIGH SCHOOL REXBURG, IDAHO FOREWORD THE MADISONIAN STAFF HAS WORKED VERY HARD TO ARRANGE THESE PAGES FOR YOU TO READ AND STUDY. MANY THINGS ARE PRESENTED IN THIS VOL- UME OF 1950-51 WHICH WILL BE OF LASTING INTEREST TO THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY AND TO THOSE WHO FOLLOW. WE EARNESTLY HOPE THAT YOU WILL EN- JOY THE MADISONIAN WHICH WE HAVE PUT OUT FOR YOU THIS YEAR. DEDICATION THE STUDENTS OF MADISON HIGH SCHOOL TAKE GREAT PLEASURE IN DEDICATING THIS VOLUME TO OUR PREVIOUS SUPERINTENDENT, E. S. STUCKI, AND ALSO TO OUR NEW SUPER- INTENDENT, GEORGE A. CATMULL. MR. STUCKI WAS WITH US 23 YEARS, AND WE FEEL THAT WE OWE HIM A GREAT DEAL OF THANKS FOR ALL THE FINE THINGS HE HAS DONE FOR US HERE AT MADISON HIGH. MR. CATMULL, OUR NEW SUPERINTENDENT, COMES FROM RUPERT. WE FEEL MOST FORTUN- ATE IN HAVING HIM BECAUSE HE TOO IS DO- ING MUCH FOR MADISON HIGH SCHOOL AND ALL SCHOOLS OF THIS DISTRICT. E, S. STUCKI GEORGE A. CATMULL IN MEMORIAN HARVEY OTTESEN I watched a sail until it dropped from sight Over the bounding sea. A gleam of white, A last far-flashed farewell, and, like a thought Slipped out of mind, it vanished and was not. Yet to the helmsman standing at the wheel Broad seas still stretched beneath the gliding keel Disaster? Change? He left no slightest sign. Nor dreamed he of that far horizon line. So may it be, perchance, when down the tide Our dear ones vanish. Peacefully they glide On level seas, nor mark the unknown bound; We call it death— to them ' tis life beyond. —Anonymous (Please do not autograph on this page.) ■ mr SCHOOL BOARD Left to right: Lynn Morris, G. The Legislative Council is a representative body consisting of representatives from each of the four classes, home room delegates, and the various appointed officers. The Student Body Council is the chief governing body of the school and therefore has the power to levy assessments, appropriate money from the gen- eral fund of the student body, originate and provide plans for student body use, and establish laws to safeguard the property of the school and members of the student body. The council regulates all routine procedure in the school in an effort to increase its efficiency. They traveled into a far country known as High School and entered the village of Freshman. Being very unorganized, they chose as their leader Kyle of the House of Spaulding to guide them through this new experience. Being very small and quiet they were hardly noticed in that village for they had been taught to be seen and not heard. SCENE II Traveling on farther and gathering knowledge as they went, they entered the second village called Sophomore. By now they were noticed a little more by other people passing along the road. Here they chose a new leader. Sir Iver of Albretsen. He led them on to a wonderful Sophomore Frolic and other new and interesting experiences. Some of the students had even grown a few inches taller. SCENE III And lo, they became upper classmen and beheld the next village of Junior. By now they thought they even had a little more knowledge than their coun- selors. Their shyness now had all left them, and they became very bold and ventured forth in suits and formals to the Holy Junior Prom. Their leader now became the gallant Lawrence of Anderson. And yea, it was a very happy and prosperous journey that year. SCENE IV And then the great moment arrived. They at last became mighty Seniors. They were now allowed to sit in the front rows of the Great Meeting Hall. They were looked up to, and respected throughout the land. Their leader became the Leiand Lafayette of the House of Thompson. As they traveled they encountered the Majestic Senior Play. Journeying on they came to the great Colosseum Gym where they gayily whirled at the Senior Ball. Then came the great and glorious day when they went forth to receive their precious senior rings. And lo, as time passed they had their Sneak and there were none to be found at school that eventful day. SCENE V Time now passed on fleeting feet, and as they looked beyond the great towering white doors of Graduation, they beheld with much wonder this greatest of all villages. As they entered through the gates they noticed how much know- ledge their teachers had gained in such a short time. They felt a little frightened, at the great splendor that was set before them. It was a beautiful day and people throughout the land gathered to say farewell. The road had been long and the way not easy, but they would never forget those wonderful days. At last they have reached the height of their glory. Here they will separate, and each will take his own road to seek further wisdom and learning. At parting we pause to say thanks for the guiding advice of our counselors and to bid a sad and fond goodbye to all our wonderful classmates of Madison High. 14 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Left to right, seated: Sharen Hemming, speech and debate manager; Faye Hinckley, recreation leader; Pat Randall, athletic manager; Sharon Parkinson, secretary; Adele Shuldberg, vice president; standing: Mr. Nelson adviser; Leiand Thompson, president; LeRoy Smith, cheer leader; Merrell Watts, represent- ative; Delmar Raybould, reporter; Mr. Teuscher, adviser. 15 Class of ' 51 LORRAINE KEELE: Always friendly— always smil- ing. The scholarship, traditions, and activities of Madison High School attained a higher standard when the class of ' 52 entered its halls. Even in our Freshman year we showed great promise in athletics, music, declamation, dramatics, and scholastic achievements. This was evidenced more during our Sophomore year and was climaxed by close placing in the interscholastic series. Under the able leadership of our officers this year we have attained new heights through our Junior Promenade, assembly and class parties. This school year of 1950-51 has seen the Sophs really go places. This year the class has gone in for social, athletic, and intellectual activities. Early in December the social season was started off with a bang- up roller skating party followed up by another successful party later in the year. The Sophomore Week was made better than ever by an outstanding assembly and the ever-popular Sophomore Frolic. To top the record the Sophomore squad of basketballers per- formed an almost impossible feat by overcoming all classes and walk- ing away with the Class Series Championship, and our class was awarded first prize for its Pep Vodie skit, which was very clever. These were two of the highlights of the year. The Sophomores ' aim is to keep at it and by the time we grad- uate to have made a name for ourselves and Madison High. 26 CLASS OF ' 53 Joan Ross Idagene Brent Lorin Keith Jo Ann Donald Carol Vearl Hunter Hinckley Jeppeson Hall Mortensen Hinckley Thompson Fisher Sommers Hansen Wilma Dennis Jean Ted Marsha Carol Lee Ned Luella Ross Taylor Emery Smith Powell Hegsted Beattie Winegar Horne Kauer Bowen Carolyn Dwight Shirley Douglas Reva Larren Ada Lou Thomas Sharon Henry ' arkinson Spaulding Pearson Swendsen Smith Arnold Sutton Webster Parker Whittaker dna Pearl William Ruth Jack Bonnie Dean Beth Gail Brent Warren demons Koon Winters Waddel Neville Johnson Anderson Nelson Smith Topham Sue Bert Colleen Dwayne Carol Larry Claire Lynn Theron Carol Nylin Randall Trost Cook Luthy Welker Jensen McKinlay Cheney Skinner Nelson Gary Lorraine Gerald Joan DaVon Lowena Ronald Marie Parkinson Rowe Taylor Cluff Lauder Little Rigby Brower 27 CLASS OF ' 53 Nadine Diane Howard David Lorraine Melvin Roberta Donald Sharon Brent Lindsay Clements Biddulph Melendez Safford Ricks LaFever Percival Anderson Bell LaRee Gary Ruth Dean Joan Boyd Sharon Garth Maxine Glen Huffaker Winters Rasmussen Barney Hill Weekes Hendricks Wilson Briggs Parker Shirley Robert Elma Jean Don Betty Charles Sharon Mary Claire Verda Klingler Keele Hansen Winn Smith Thomason Bird Vollman Fullmer Edstrom Bonnie Donald Ha Jean Harry Shirley Richard Jerry Larry Renee Richard Sellers Reno Huskinson Munns Anderson Anderson Moore Hill Lewis Smith Shiela Franchot Veria Doria George Donnetta Margaret Arliss Colleen Lee Erickson Jensen Sharp England Bush Burns Goodliffe Willmore Hill Morrell Lillowene Maurine Gary Viola Jannette Patty Ann Darrell Kay Mary Jean demons Prichard Christensen demons Jackomsen Topham Weiser Henderson Wilding Rigby 28 1 . The freshman class of 1950-51 is alert and progressive. After having been upper classmen in junior high, our position as the lowest class in senior high left us puzzled and confused for a time. However, we now have our bearings and shall strive to make a worthwhile contribution to the life of Madison High. Our class is large and we hope it will be just as large at grad- uation. 30 CLASS OF ' 54 Margie Rock 1 _ II Lowell Barrick Wayne Sharp Jimmy Meikle Sharon Shuldberg Gereld Larson Earleen Ricks Denver Erickson Marsha Christensen Howard Jensen Dorothy Lewis Blair Hall Jolene Butler Robert Ellsworth Wanda Johansen John Henderson Afton Larson Ted Hallstrom Barbara Lyman Donald Widdison Gloria Robison blair Fisher Laura Hope Richard Morrell Lois Powell Bill DeMott Alene Flamm Kay Anderson Maralyn Barber Allen Fitch Percia Green La neiie Sutton Fern Kerswe 1 Gary Steiner Nedra Scoresby Jay Goodliffe Lois Ann Neville Lloyd Harris Loretta Briggs Karen Jensen Myrna Coles Dallas Allen Kay Taylor LeRoy Kerbs Bonnie Holmes Sherrel Nelson Mary Lou Davis Harvey Wright Marian Whittaker Wayne Barney Helen Hawkes Jay Dearing Freeda Clements Kendal Perkins Irene Whittaker Rozella Weekes Lynn Parker Joan Walker Lynn Glover Myrna Benson Wayne Jodey Gay Nell Clarke Ross Summers Carol Galbraith Ken McGee Linda Lake Bill Harward JoAnne Horkley Reed Howell Evelyn Walker 31 1 CLASS OF ' 54 Beverly Stoddard Frank Moore Karen Ricks Kay Hinckley Karen Woodmansee Bill Lawrence Ramon Widdison Noel Ladle Sharen Swendsen Larry Weekes Grace Jeppson Brent Matsura Nyal Bigler Davon Sommers Arvilla Wheelwright Allen Smith Carma Jensen Brigham Whittaker Joyce Johnson Carol Thomson Dorothy Jacobsen Price Davenport Donna Neilson Gordon Steiner Beverly Martin Lyie Briggs Jean Siepert Gaylen Erickson Shirley Grover John Nelson Mary Dawn Keppner Jiro Hanami Jean Hill Luella Smith Keith Christensen Nelda Rainey Richard Smith Jeanie Webster Bill Fowler Sharon Stephenson Frances Wilcox John Matson Jeannine Parker Ray Willmore Wanda Muir Carl Bradshaw Ronella Hendricks Jack Blackburn Cornell Grover Mary Bush Shirleen Weber Dee Brovi er Shirley Freeman Val Ray Brower Betty Jean Gold Ruth Hunter Rex Smith Janet Little Phyllis Thomson Darrell Whitehead Leon Lester Weatherston Bush ACTIVITIES THE HANDBOOK Ann Weiser Editor Shirley Anderson Assistant Editor M NEWS STAFF In the form of student news, gossip, and stories, the M News has brought added life and interest to school activities. Club The purpose of the K.K.K. club at Madison is to foster greater activity participation among the upper class boys. It is a standing regulation of its constitution that each member attend every activity or be subject to certain fines. Besides this, the club has a banquet every month and an occasional trip to certain points for recreation. These activities have marked this year as one of the most successful in the history of ihe club. This year a new constitution has been written. Also, a record enrollment has been established. All these factors together show that the K club is one of the top clubs of the school. The boys have done their best to keep it that way.
