Such values change from one day to the next becoming stronger with the years. We have endeavored to include the best in this Madi- sonian and give to the students treasured memories of the past. The history and gradual expansion of our educational system came with our national development, from the little log schoolhouse of Colonial times to the modern spe- cialized public school of today. Public school education has shaped the life of a free nation. To the men and women, our forefathers, who built the foundation of our public schools, we respectfully dedicate this volume. and! h a 4 CLASS SCHEDULE FATHERS ' AND MOTHERS ' DAY JANUARY 28, 1949 TIME PERIOD SUBJECT ROOM NO. CAMPUSTRY i4 ni i i 1 1 a t i c H As world conditions begin to adjust themselves toward more nearly normal pre-war conditions, it becomes more apparent that a high school training is important and necessary for nearly all youth. Many jobs in industry require high school graduation. Business and professional courses require high school training. But aside from the re- quirem ents which are made of youth by society and industry, high school experiences are very important. The friendships formed in high school and the adjustments made during that period are among the most important and significant accomplishments of life. I congratulate you on your achievements during the school year of 1948-49. I am sure your Madisonian will help you to retain the memory of many of the more important things of the year and to re-live them again in the future. May it point also to a future filled with the joy of accomplishment and service. Best wishes to each student of Madison High School and success to all of you. Most sincerely, E. S. Stucki, ' Superintendent. OUR SCHOOL BOARD Left to right — T. Raymond Payne, Ferrell Rock, G. Alton Anderson, Chairman; Ronald Hill, Leonard Smith, Willis J. Lyman, Secretary. Hofite ccjfn CcuHcil The Home Room Council was established to work with the Student Council in prob- lems relating to student life. They were organized to meet demands for a rapidly expand- ing school program. The activities of this body have increased and their field of action has expanded. Each Home Room of the school is represented by a member on the council; who takes the problems of his Home Room to the council at their weekly meetings. All student problems are shared in common when discussed in this manner. This makes for a system of cooperative efficiency in the directing of student affairs. Council The Student Council has made a record this year of which it is justly proud. A new constitution was drawn up and rati- fied, a handbook was published, many dances were sponsored, and several very good lyceums were presented to the stu- dents. The Council has ever been alert to the needs and desires of the Student Body and has promoted understanding and good will among the students. Third Row — A. E. Each soon becomes an integral part of the insti- tution; each accepts a share of the responsibility of governing their school, and of sustain- ing its standards. If their conduct is motivated by a sincere desire to progress in all phases of learning; to make each succeeding year an ensign of triumph to those that follow; the years spent in the environment of a democratic school will have been profitable and happy. The exit will be a march of satisfaction, and their confidence will be buoyed by the finer things which have become part of their character. LeRoy Anderson, President of the Student Body, and Chairman of the Student Council, has promoted many worth while activities during the year. All the officers deserve much credit for their splendid efforts in maintaining a democratic spirit and furthering those things which promote good citizenship. Members of our class have attained a high scholastic rating. In athletics we won the class series in basketball for three successive years and have been active in the athletic program of the school. Our senior play was an outstanding success. During our senior week we gave to the school the meaning of School Spirit. The week culminated in a dance which was really a social success. 14 S e H i 0 t Donna Boehlke Thespian Club 3-4, Officer 4; Class Officer 5-4; Chorus 1-2-4; Co-ed Club 1-2-3-4; Pep Vodie 1. The Freshmen class was very active on M Day, and we won second place in the events of the day. We had a successful class party at the city park, and a well planned Freshmen Flip went over extra well. Bob Powell made the main basketball team and Frank Jenkins won the Cross Country race. 1946- 1947 As sophomores we again crowded the halls. We had lost a few of our number but were still a very active class. That year we won the class series in basketball. Jerry McCulloch won the cross country race. La Ree Munns was the only sophomore in the school play and Thespian Club. We had two class parties. One of them was a swimming party at Pincocks. Our Sophomore Frolic was a booming success. 1947- 1948 We were then Juniors! Our number had dwindled more, but we were still outstanding. We again won the class series in basketball. Gwenna Robinson (Young), Valene Cherry, and Dolores Topham all served as Student Body Officers. Our Junior Prom was held in the Madison Gym. Our decorations were memorable. Bob Powell received his State Farmer Degree. 1948- 1949 The Senior Class is now the smallest class at Madison. Nevertheless, we won the Class series in basketball for the third consecutive year. LeRoy Anderson, Joan Nelson, Joe Ann Anderson, and Jerry McCulloch from the Senior Class served as Student Body Officers. Five boys from the Senior Class are on the basketball team. The Senior Play, a three act comedy, was a great success; also the Senior Ball will be remembered as a successful event. Now to all Seniors, Graduation Day is near. As we leave the halls of Madison High, we wish to her students, and to the faculty — The Very Best of Everything. 20 The fitcmic Slcnde Madison High School Auditorium January 7 at 8:00 p.m. PRODUCTION STAFF m C. Athletic Manager. Although not the largest Freshman Class to have entered Madison High, we claim to be a spirited group of students. It even has been rumored that it is a problem to direct the atomic energies of the freshmen in proper channels. However, our intentions are good and our aims are high. We hope to develop and to accomplish much during cur meteoric high school career. Already our contributions to the life of the school are being recognized. Fresh man talent has been prominently in evidence on several assembly programs throughout the year. The Freshman Party in December gave social experience and helped us become better acquainted. The successful Freshman Week in April culminated our social activities of the school year. We trust that next year we will become even better school citizens. 30 Stainlhi — Vard 1 Icndrlcks, lirucc Ricks, Virgil Jones, Vonn Withers, Lindon Cordon, David Walz, Elmer Park, Reed Nelson, Larry Grover, Larry Barber, Robert Ard, Reed Barney, Larry Archibald, Tex Kauer, D.irrcll 1 iiipc, Slioliaru Matsunii. The Madison Chapter of Future Homemakers of America is affihated with the State and National Organization. It is just a new club in this school, but is growing very fast. The purpose of the F.H.A. is to promote a growing appreciation of the group and a satisfaction in homemaking. Regular meetings are held during the noon hour and the social events are in the eve- nings. The special activities included a watermelon bust in the City Park, the initiation, a Harvest Ball, Christmas Party, a Roller Skating Party, a Fashion Show which is held with the Co-ed Club, and several assemblies. Every girl who takes Homemaking is eligible to join this organization. The member- ship this year totals 67. One of our projects this year was to formulate a new Constitution. Because music knows no barriers of languages; because it recognizes no impediments to free intercommunication; because it speaks a universal tongue, music can make us all more vividly aware of that common humanity which is ours and which shall one day unite the nations of the world in one great brotherhood. (Letter of Franklin D. Roose- velt to Mrs. Vincent Ober.) A true and worthwhile music program promotes the growth of the individual in the finer things of life such as art, literature and nature. Such an accomplishment is surel) of a higher nature and the music lover realizes that he is in love with the loveliest.
