FOREWORD Although the staff has been handicapped and .iisappointed in getting out this annual, we have tried our best to make it live up to the stan- dards set by its predecessors. While the war has disrupted many things in our lives, it has injected a new, vibrant spirit into the life of the school. We have tried to capture that spirit on these few pages. We would like you to picture yourself entering the east door with the two students on the first page, who are symbolical of all of you, for a brief resume of your activities in 1943. If, in your journey with them through these pages, you will re-live your experiences of this past year, and leave, still in their company, with a feeling of satisfaction at a year well spent, yet tempered by that ever-present, familiar feeling of nostalgia when we look back on the worthwhile things of the past, we will have ac- complished our purpose.

DEDICATION Today this country, with the rest of the United Nations, is fighting a war, a total war, for the estabHshment of the Four Freedoms wherever they may be welcomed by the oppressed and freedom-loving peoples of the earth. Every soldier, sailor, and marine is valiantly defending those rights; that we may have a world free from domination of ruthless tyrants to whom the individual is nothing. However, our fighting men are also fighting for some thing else, something perhaps that is even greater. They are fighting in the foxholes and swamps, on the sands and in the mountains and on the sea and in the sky in the hope that through their efforts, man may never need fight again. To this spirit we humbly dedicate the Madisonian.
