1 i THE 1943 MADISONIAN The 1943 PUBLISHED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF MADISON HIGH SCHOOL DOUGLAS KERR EDITOR PAUL STOWELL BUSINESS MANAGER CONTENTS PERSONNEL ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ADVERTISERS DEDICATION Today this country, with the rest of the United Nations, is fighting a war, a total war, for the estabHshment of the Four Freedoms wherever they may be welcomed by the oppressed and freedom-loving peoples of the earth. Every soldier, sailor, and marine is valiantly defending those rights; that we may have a world free from domination of ruthless tyrants to whom the individual is nothing. However, our fighting men are also fighting for some thing else, something perhaps that is even greater. They are fighting in the foxholes and swamps, on the sands and in the mountains and on the sea and in the sky in the hope that through their efforts, man may never need fight again. To this spirit we humbly dedicate the Madisonian. FOREWORD Although the staff has been handicapped and .iisappointed in getting out this annual, we have tried our best to make it live up to the stan- dards set by its predecessors. While the war has disrupted many things in our lives, it has injected a new, vibrant spirit into the life of the school. We have tried to capture that spirit on these few pages. We would like you to picture yourself entering the east door with the two students on the first page, who are symbolical of all of you, for a brief resume of your activities in 1943. If, in your journey with them through these pages, you will re-live your experiences of this past year, and leave, still in their company, with a feeling of satisfaction at a year well spent, yet tempered by that ever-present, familiar feeling of nostalgia when we look back on the worthwhile things of the past, we will have ac- complished our purpose. SENIORS This is one of the smallest classes to gradu ate from Madison in recent years, but these Seniors have substituted quality for quantity. They have participated in every activity sponsored by the school, and also have held two dancing parties. A few outstanding activities were the scrap drive, a highly successful Senior Ball, and the winning skit of the Vaudeville Show on M Day. The highlight of the year was their winning of the Harvest Contest sponsored by the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company, by putting a total of 2,08 S hours in the beet fields during harvest vacation. For this they received a check of $2 5 as first prize. SENIOR PLAY Left to right: Boyd Thompson, Janet Bitter, Blaine Lyman, Marian Heileson, Boh Young, DougUis Kerr, Dona Parkinson, Alvin Harris, David Davis, Annette Craven Laura Beehe, Betty Jean Cottle. The Case of the Laughing Dwarf , the Senior Phiy this year, was a murder mystery packed with thrills and suspense. Its audience appeal not only went over in a big way, but also it was a huge financial success, taking in more money than any Senior Play for many years. We should thank all those who participated in the success of the pro- duction. DEBATE Mr. Borrownian, the tirsi debate coach, left school to join the Marines shortly after the season started. Mr. Cooper was chosen to take his place, and continuing the work Mr. Borrowman started, he and the debaters proceeded to really go places. The main ream, composed of Ina Neeley and N ' erla Clark, affirmative; and David Davis and Douglas Kerr, negative, tied for first place in both the district and inter-district meets. The debate question they discussed so successfully was: Resolved: That a World Federal Government should be established. Mr. C. D. Cooper WAR BOND AND STAMP DRIVE Sales of War Bonds and Stamps every Wednesday from the booth pictured above were begun by Mr. Gledhill ' s Home Room in November. The sales soon turned into a race among the Home Rooms for the best participation in both percentage and the greatest sales per student. When the Thespians took over the sales, the race was really hot and heavy. Mr. Broadbent ' s and Mr. Gledhill ' s Home Rooms dominated the percentage competition with twenty-one 100 marks credited to each of their rooms. Mr. Gledhill ' s Home Room also won the per capita participation with about $2 5 0 credited to each student in his room. Altogether a sum of $25,871.5 5 was invested in War Bonds and Stamps by the student body. This is a very fine record and one we should all be provid of. THE SCHOOL FRONT SCRAP DRIVE The above picture isn ' t one of the town junk heap, as you might imagine, for if you look closely you will find the familiar red brick building peeping from behind those piles of metal. That picture is the result of the scrap drive conducted during the month of November, with keen competition between the classes. Final tabulations show that the Sophomores captured first place, with the Juniors second and the Seniors and Freshmen following. Altogether about 9 5,000 pounds were gathered. Blair Davis and Katherine Parker captured individual honors with their large contributions. The 5crap drive not only supplied more metal to be dropped upon the worried heads of Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo but also the sale of thj metal brought a welcome addition to the student body fund. OTHER ACTIVITIES Additional war activities Madison has participated in this year are: A Pre-Flight Aero- nautics course, a Radio course, a Home Nursing course, a First Aid course, a Com- mando physical hardeni ng course, and a course in Basic Electricity. In addition to this, help was given in the harvest fields and the music department participated in the Sec- ond War Loan Drive. On the school front we certainly did our part.
