Winter if 1 Board of Directors Madison County Chamber of Commerce 4 r - 1935- Published by the The Associated Students of Madison High rexburg, idaho OXSVJOX a E HAVE attempted in this Madisonian to engrave in permanent unchanging form the hap- piest, funniest, and the most impressive happen- ings. With these we have mixed some school spirit and from them drawn this, your Madi- sonian, with the hope that it will keep alive these happy school-day memories. May it prove a never ending source of pleasant retrospection. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT SCENES OF IDAHO ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS CLUBS DEPARTMENTS ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES STUDENT LIFE EcUcation •ERMEATING our school, activating and vita- lizing it, centralizing our aims, our thoughts and our ambitions, welding us closer together, and stimulating us to greater things is an ever present influence. Intangible as ether, powerful as gra- vity — it has existed since the school ' s beginning as an important and integral part of it, as the portals, or the faculty, or the students; it is the indefinable sum of them all. We call it school spirit or the spirit of Madison High School. To that spirit, with high hopes for the future and with a deep appreciation of what it means to us, we dedicate this volume of the Madisonian. [ 6 ] m« ADISON HIGH our Alma Mater we are here Ready to sing your songs and for you ever cheer.. We ' re ever near you, proud to cheer you. And your boat to help you steer. For we ' re boosters of our Madison High. CHORUS We will sing for dear old Madison High. For the school we love so dear. Let our praises reach the sky. Still we can ' t o ' er praise our Madison High. Oh! Let our cheers and chorus never die: For her future have no fear, For we ' re out again to win Thru the thick or thru the thin, While we boost for Madison High. When in the future we review the days all past. Our support to you will be still firm and fast. You can depend upon our helping, for we ' ll stay until the last, For we ' re boosters of our Madison High. [ 7 ] No Voice, but oh, the silence sank like music on my heart. [ 9 ] Nature ' s mightiest voices proclaim her wondrous beauty. [ 10 ] r II ] E WISH to express our appreciation for the splendid cooperation and interest of all the students and members of the faculty who have aided in the production of this 1935 Madisonian. LESTER PETERSON Seminary B.S., U. of U. iJ jCo(je to saa (J DO NOT KNOW that I could make entirely clear to an outsider the pleasure I have in teaching. I had rather earn my living by teaching than in any other way. In my mind, teaching is not merely a life work, a profession, an occupation, a struggle: it is a passion. I love to teach. I love to teach as a painter loves to paint, as a musician loves to play, as a singer loves to sing, as a strong man rejoices to run a race. Teaching is an art — an art so great and so difficult to master that a man or woman can spend a long life at it without realizing much more than his limitations and mistakes, and his distance from the ideal. But the main aim of my happy days has been to become a good teacher, just as every architect wishes to be a good architect and every professional poet strives toward perfection. William Lyon Phelps [ 20 ] SEPTEMBER, one hundred and thirty-six enthusiastic Seniors entered Madison. They went to work and demonstrated their possibilities and successes in activities of the school. Officers were elected as follows: Paul Harris, president; Claire Packer, vice-president; Dixie Miller, secretary and treasurer: Ralph Hall- strom, athletic manager: Lawrence Siglin, cheer leader; Teddie Lue Webster, rec- reation leader; Thelma Browning, reporter: Fenemor Davidson, debate manager. The Seniors have been outstanding in art, music, commercial work, athletics and school spirit, and in promoting and co-operating for the best interest of the school. The Seniors hope that right attitudes established by the class will follow through all coming classes. Their aim has been a bigger and better Madison. The class projects of putting in a tennis court with the help of the school, the purchase of class pins and rings, the Senior Play, the Senior Ball and the Annual Sneak, indicate that the year was full of useful activities. As time passes, pleasant memories of associations will return with the ever- present urge of returning to Madison. From the beginning they have shown much Pep and vitality. Fraternal, fun-loving and real students, they have been behind every enterprise and project that the school has sponsored. As usual, a good share of the credit due this fine group goes to its leaders. The class has been doing its best since entering Madison as Freshmen. They have set for themselves high aims and goals and followed through. The class officers are as follows: Charles Brizzee, president; Brent Suther- land, vice-president: Mary Stowell. secretary and treasurer: Earl Walters, athletic manager; Francis Smith, debate manager; Mary Edith Weber, recreation leader; Beverley Herdti. reporter; Max Parkinson, yell leader. The splendid achievements of Juniors in debating, basketball, football, dra- matics, music and classwork were climaxed by the never-to-be-forgotten Junior Promenade. Fine music, beautiful decorations in a Japanese theme, original dance programs in the form of a fan and an excellent patronage made it a glorious suc- cess financially as well as socially. The crowning events of the evening were the Promenade by the Juniors and a special dance by three Japanese girls in native costume. The Juniors fee? justly proud of their Prom. True to the adage that One must live for the present but see into the future, the Juniors are already making plans for next year ' s activities. Congratulations, and success for the future. Friday, January 1 1, 1935, the Sophomore class sponsored the annual Sopho- more Frolic in the form of a Winter Carnival. This was preceded by a school assembly which was based upon an Eskimo theme. On March 1 5 the Sophomores had everyone out of bed a few hours early to a Sunrise Dance. The dance was very successful and well attended by the students. The Sophomores were very well represented in the school play and opera. They were represented in the Student Body offices, band, athletics, and other school activities. The Student Body cheer leaders came from the Sophomore class. We are proud of them and hope in the coming two years to have students among us who will help make the whole student body a success, and the next two years very enjoyable for everyone. f 42 ] Front Row, left to right. After a final court in which all wrong-doers received their just (?) punishment, the pledges were graduated from the status of goats to that of members. The new members were given a banquet to prove to them that the Senior members had kind hearts, after all. Two dancing parties were given by the club during the year, which proved to be very successful. The annual formal ball was, as usual, one of the most talked-of events. The club also took part in a number of other events. The Kappa Kegga Knales Klub started the third year of its organization with the election of the following officers: president, Robert Parker; vice-president, Brent Sutherland: secretary and treasurer, Ralph Hallstrom. This year, there were ten Junior and two Senior pledges. The initiation lasted for three days and was a worthy test of the endurance and stamina of the pledges. ROBERT PARKBR President [ 60 ] Jatlizz i and :A [otfisiX i - NE of the fine traditions which the Madison High School has established is the Annual Father ' s and Mother ' s Day on the last Friday in January. Both parents and students are most whole-hearted in their support of this day. The parents attend the activities of the day in larger numbers each year, while the students remain at home to make possible the attendance of their parents. Father ' s and Mother ' s Day this year, January 25. was the most successful that the school has had. The buses, filled with enthusiastic parents, came in on regular schedule and the parents within walking distance of the school came in equally large numbers. Great interest was manifested in the home room activities and in each class held during the fore-noon. All classes were held for shortened periods. At noon a splendid lunch was served to all parents, through the courtesy and interest of the School Board, and through the service rendered by the Home Economics Department, under the direction of Miss Anderson. A band concert occupied a part of the noon hour, and an interesting program was given during the following hour. The period from 2:30 to 4:00. o ' clock was reserved for a consultation period between parents and teachers. Everything attempted during the day was for the purpose of making the parents feel welcome and of acquainting them with the work of the school. A great many parents expressed appreciation for the activities of the day and stated that the last Friday of January has come to be the outstanding day of the year for them. [ 61 ] AG. With the two new cement courts which are being completed this spring as projects of the classes of 1935 and 1936, our school will have facilities equal to or better than those of other schools, and interest and participation in tennis should increase very much.
