In future years we shall be able to look back upon a few of the events that happened while we were still at Madison High. To the underclassmen this is only one, in two, three, or four years. To the Senior Class it is the accomplishment of four happy years filled with pleasant memories, exciting days, and good fellowship. These we shall always cherish, and they will serve to remind us of the 'days that used to be.' U31 G--A Class History On September 3, 1947 we became the Freshman Class of Madison High School. Entering high school was an event we had looked forward to for eight years. The idea was a novelty to us because up until that time we had never changed rooms for different classes. Some of us thought that We could skip classes, run around and do nothing, but these are no longer with us. Some of us thought of high school as a place to catch boyfriends or girlfriends, but these have since married. Some of us strove hard to pass, taking things as they came, sweating through Mid-Term and Final exams, year after year. These are the Seniors of '51. Our Freshman sponsors were Mr. Cure and Miss Slate. Both did their utmost to set us on the right path. We shall always be indebted to them. Our class officers and leaders also did the best they could to lead us. We were capably guided under the direction of our Freshman Class Presi- dent, Paul Ed Webster. A year later, Barbara Stanfield became President of our Sophomore Class. Our sponsors were Miss Epps, and Mrs. Fagge. We were very glad for this year to come because we were not on the bottom rung of the ladder. We knew we were climbing, slowly but surely. The number in the class was smaller this year and it was the smallest class in school, but nevertheless our candidate of Homecoming Queen, Jean Snead, won. This was the year we carried the daisy chain. We had fun gathering the daisies and making the chain. We also gave the seniors a weiner roast which was en- joyed by all. Our Junior year found us publishing the 'Madison High News', under the direction of Mr. Null. The paper was a great success due to the fact that each member of the class worked toward its per- fection. Clyde Baker was President of the Junior Class. Our Junior contestant in the Homecoming Queen Contest, Joan Collins, won by a large majority making the second consecutive year that our contestant had won. Every junior looks forward to the Junior-Senior Banquet, our Junior Class was no exception. We sold cards, stationery, and candy to finance the Banquet. Everyone worked hard, including Miss Starnes and Mrs. Greene, the Junior sponsors, who did everything imaginable toward mak- ing our Banquet the best that Madison High had ever seen. The Banquet was held at the Bliss Restaurant in Greensboro, and from all reports it was enjoyed by all. We, too, thought that it was the best that our school had ever seen. At the end of school seven boys and girls were Marshals at the Commencement. Most of the girls were sunburnt due to the fact that we all went to Reynolds Park the last day of school. Finally September rolled around again and we found ourselves Seniors, with only half the num- ber that had started in September of 1947. T. P. Rumsey was elected President of the Senior Class. The Senior Class sponsored the second annual 'Miss Madison High Beauty Pageant', which turned out to be a far greater success than we had hoped for. Next came the Senior Class Play, 'Special Delivery'. We had fun at rehearsals and tryouts. A very large crowd attended and most everyone got a lot of laughs. From money we had collected from various sources, our class took a trip to Williamsburg Va., and Washington, D. C. The trip was pleasant, and seeing the old colonial buildings at Williams- burg and the Government buildings at Washington, filled each with a deep pride for his country, not easily forgotten. Chaperons for the trip were Mr. and Mrs. Null. Though small in number we worked hard in completing this Annual. Selling ads, writing ar- ticles, and the things that go into the work of publishing an Annual, we are proud to say that we have published the largest and best Annual of any Senior Class at Madison High. On May 30, 1951 we finished our stay at Madison High. We can hope that the rest of our lives can be as happy as the days and years spent here. By: T. P. Rumsey Class Historian li 1+ QI Class Prophecy I had just returned from the Cambridge School of law and was sitting in my apartment in New York City. It was a hot, sultry night in Mid-Summer. I walked over to a window, opened it, and glanced down into the street. There I saw someone who I had known for a long time. We had been in school together. She was now a well-known dancer. Quickly I hurried down the stairs to see her, With introductions over, my old schoolmate, Marie Smith and I strolled down the Avenue to- gether talking over old times. Later, we drove over to a carnival that was in town. There we saw a sign that read 'Looking into the Future' with Rositalay. We decided to go in. Once inside, we asked Rositalay to find, if she could, all of our classmates from our old Class of '51 of Madison High School. This experience took us on a journey through many countries and far off places. Finally, we arrived at an old oil well in Texas, where we received a friendly 'Howdy' from none other than Billy 'strike it rich' Minich. From here we journeyed into the Land of Sunshine, California, where we saw many movie stars being mobbed by fans: Tommy Sharpe, the New Clark Gable, and Jo Ann Collins Howard Hughes' new discovery to replace Jane Russell. From here we journeyed into the darkest depths of Africa where we saw the great huntress Vertie 'Bring 'em back Alive' Lineberry, with her faithful companion, Jimmy 'The Killer' Minich. After visiting them, we left for China, where we saw Jane 'Missionary' Shelton who was holding regular English classes. Then we came by Madison where we saw Owen Young an Agriculture Teacher. Like a movie flashing a scene, we saw in the crystal ball pictures of our classmates in their new roles: Here we saw: Amos Matherly as a Lucky Strike tobacco auctioneer. jean Snead posing for True Romance covers. Carl Goins, a Senator from the State of North Carolina, trying to promote a bill on 'The Welfare of Carpenters.' Bill Moore was running a brewery in Madison. C. B. Hall was the Mayor of Madison. Doris Vaughn was a cigarette girl at the Stork Club in New York City. Next we saw: Herman Stephens, the Coach of the Notre Dame Football Team, explaining some new plays to his boys. Kenneth Truitt, a 'Hot-Rod' driver. J. T. Hand, marrfed and settled down on a farm near Madison, with seven kids. Nothing slow about that 'Chicken'. Ruth Baker, a chemistry teacher at Mayodan. Bobby Mabe, owner of a Drug Store Chain. Billy Sparks, a News Correspondent. Lila Mae Woods, owner of a Fur company Lastly, we saw, Virginia Moore as a world famous Model. Gwynn Martin, owner of two ulta- modern theaters, one in Madison and one in Mayodan. Carlton Sharpe was a gentleman farmer who had acquired a vast amount of land in the Huntsville area. Gene Ferguson, as a Studebaker dealer in Madison. T. P. Rumsey in the role of President of Duke University. The time was running out and we had to go to work, so we thanked Rositalay. We would always remember Rositalay Bosque as one of our best friends. As Marie and I parted, we cou1dn't help thinking about the wonderful day we had spent together. By: Clyde Baker l 15 l THE CLASS GF 1951 MISS JO ANN COLLINS 1949 and 1950 Homecoming Queen 1161 THE CLASS OF HOMECOMING QUEENS MISS JEAN SNEAD 1948 Homecoming Queen Ever since the innovation o f t h e Homecoming Queen Contest three years ago in 1948, the Class of '51 has had its candidate named as the Queen. In 1948, Jean Snead was crowned Queen to rule over the Homecoming football game, and in 1949 and 1950, Jo Ann Collins ruled over the colorful event. As the pho- tos on these pages reveal, one can readily understand why the class of '51 will long be remembered as the Class of Homecoming Queens. Our most sincere congratulations go to these two lovely girls. Their beauty, poise, grace and personalities will surely prove to be quite an inspira- tion to lucky Winners of years to come. l17l Class Poem Slowly the minutes are ticking away: The time of our lives is fleeting. We're stepping into another dayg A new horizon we're greeting. The minutes, the hours, the days, and the years Have all too swiftly flown, And mingled with laughter are traces of tears As we realize these moments are gone. We fought each battle and conquered each fearg We shared all our joy and sorrow. United we stood from year unto yearg United we'1l face the tomorrow. Undaunted we'll move toward a shining light- The light which makes success. Unerring we'll walk in the paths of rightg To the world we'll offer our best. And now we don the cap and gowng Our sheepskins we receiveg And now we lay our studies down, And sadly we take our leave. But the Class of '51 never can sever Our hearts from the school where you find us, For the sands of time will hold forever The footprints we leave behind us. Mr. Cure and Mr. Guiton, our Freshman Sponsors, finally came to the rescue. To us they were like bones to a starving dog. Our boys won the Interclass Tournament in basketball and in the Spring we went on a picnic and swimming party at Reynolds Park. Our Second year was a bit more eventful, with Miss Epps and Mrs. Fagge as our Sponsors. In October we went to Chapel Hill to the Morehead Planetarium and in the Spring we gave the Seniors a Weiner roast at Hawkins Pond. Class night we carried the daisy chain. By now many of our girls and boys were married and departed our midst. Our Junior year began with excitement in the air. This was the year for the Junior-Senior Ban- quet. Everyone looked forward to the plans that would be made regarding the banquet. Our three years in high school have been prosperous ones for each and everyone of usg we are looking forward to another even better. .i l2+l Junior Class .v av in, -an 5 w- 'Mail ' , H 'ti ft' 'z fttl ., vvxv 'Q A 2 'ia go- th .5 45 our wwf mv sv'-ev First Row: Lee Anglin, Mary Jane Atkins, Ellen Bullock, Eunice Dodson, Louise Dodson. This year, Madison High's football team got off to a poor start by being defeated in their first two games. In the first game of the season, Mills Home won 12 to 6, and in the next game Guilford won 34 to 20. Madison stepped out of their class in the third game, and although rated as the underdog, came up to beat Rankin 26 to 19. The Wildcats were overpowered by Trinity, who won 26 to 7. Next on the list were Mayodan and Draper. Madison took both of these games, beating Mayodan 33 to 7 and Draper 20 to 6. Walnut Cove defeated Madi- son in the Homecoming Game by a score of 18 to 7. Again, the Wildcats stepped out of their class to meet a strong Jamestown team. Jamestown won 20 to 0. But, in the last game of the season Madison journeyed to Stoneville where they rolled over the Stoneville eleven to such an extent that they were unable to score. The final score in that game was 33 to 0. The season's record was three wins and four losses in Class A football and one win and one loss in Class AA football, making a grand total of four wins and five losses.
