'UT' manual labor is not enough. We 'must work with our minds as well as with our hands. Knowledge- and ideals are also needed in preparing the peace that we hope to build and to keep. The love of fellowmen must be in- stilled into all hearts so that war will never again threaten the progress of man. There must be no class or racial distinction among the peoples of the earth. Much will be demanded of us. Let the life of J oan of Arc ever remind us that no sacrifice is too great. Into the hands of the lawyer with his justice, the doctor with his healing, the teacher with his knowledge, the scientist with his vision, the writer with his ideals will much of this task fall. These are the people who raise the standard of living for all the world, who increase the spirit of good will among nationsg who bring beauty and culture into the lives of all. Gur ,Soldiers are fighting for a better world. We dedicate our work, our thought, our dreams to building it.

Many of you have written to us, and those letters were welcomed and appreciated. Some of you were graduated several years ago, others only last June, but Madison goes on year after year. Only a short time ago, most of you dashed to classes and just made it. We still do. We also keen un the tradition of holding up the walls. Maybe there are not so many boys doing their share, but never fear, the walls of Madison will never yield to Germany and Japan. The man problem is desperate. The boys get scarcer and scarcer, and girls get lonelier and lonelier. But, don't worry too muchg there are still enough around to keep up our morale. One thing will never change - homework. we're still good at thinking up excuses, and the teachers are still sports about it. A few things here in Madison have changed since you left. There 1sn't so much frivolity. We are more serious in our attitude. We know and feel what is going on, and we know that this war is serious business. Our clubs are not so active: many of us are working after school and during our vacations. We also do Red Cross work. We hope - some of our boxes have reached you. Remember our lunchroom? It's the place where you could hardly hear your own voice. Now there ls a booth where pretty girls sell War Stamps and Bonds. Remember how the fire alarm was always a wel- come sound, especially when you did not have your homework? Well, now we have that and in addition the air raid alarm to help us out. Most of our assemblies now concern you--what you are doingg where you are golngg when you are coming back. Wherever you boys are stationed, whether in the United States, Africa, Australia, England, or China, you can be sure that every single Madisonian is holding his head a little higher, knowing that you are there doing your best. To you all 2 soldiers, sailors, pilots, marines - we send our greetings. We are proud of you. Your friends, The Class of 1945
