F June 1, 1967 Dear Students of Madison High: In my recent Journeys around the world, I met many of the alumni from the class of '57, I thought you might be interested in hearing where they are and what each person is doing. As I had several hours before my ship sailed, I decided to go sight-seeing through New York. The first sight that greeted my eyes was a skyscraper higher than the Empire State Building being built by those famous construction engineers, Ronnie Chapman and Roy Brawner. Later, whilel was wandering through the New York Zoo, I noticed that Tim Watrous, keeper of the zoo, was feeding the Laughing Hyena. Connie Guffee, head librarian at Camegie Library, was at the zoo feeding the chimpanzee, My taxicab driver, Norma Williams, took me by Rockefeller Center where I saw Dr, Willie Mae Draper, surgeon, and her nurse, Janie Montgomery, going inside. There was a small building next door that housed The George Callis School of Dancing and the Elwood Headley School of Acting. Just then I realized that my boat was about to sail, so I hurried to the dock. As I went up the gang- plank, I met Pat DeKnoblough and her husband, also taking the trip abroad. The name of my ship was the S. S. Continental. Jimmy Owen was the captain and Johns Hawkins was his first mate. The trip across the ocean was wonderful, and I mel Billy Petty, now famous for his hair styles, Joyce Swindle, top manicurist and inventor of the Never-Comes-Off nail polish, and Wallace Jett, a famous drug- gist, who were employed on the ship. I read several books during the trip: How to be Lazy and Get Away with It by Jon Hines and How to Avoid Working by J. D. Vandercook. They were both very unusual books. My first stop was England. There I met Russell Armour, an engincer building a super highway across the country. A movie starring Julia Boyce and Jimmy Frye, with Art Director Dennis Wright, was being made in London. I found Lonnie Jernigan in France looking for antique cars to add to his collection, Also the great Franklin flieeweel Pendleton has lust won the Grand Prize in his souped-up Ferrari. I went to a fashion show while in France' and found Pam Callaway and Barbara Gillingham the top fashion designers of the show. A secretarial convention was being held in Paris. Those attending were Martha Ashworth, Margie Houdeshell, Valerie Huffines, and Margie Smiths In Switzerland I found Edward Thomhill and electrical technician Virga Noland, both employees of G. E, , making experiments on the electrical aspects of an echo, Covering this event was reporter Aaron Johnson, In Australia, the Olympics were being held, Donald Deering, Poochie Tomlin, Will T, Vance, and Gene Wallenbrock were on the U, S. Basketball team. Clarilyn Garner and Barbara Wilson were on the girls' team. In the shooting events I found Jack williams taking all the honors. In Mexico, Emma Potts was looking for unusual pots for her pottery shop in Pennsylvania. Back in America my first stop was Hollywood. Sincei had walked the soles off my shoes, I stopped at Beverly Forehand's shoe salon and bought a pair of her originals, I rented a car from the Joe King U-Drive-It Co. to use for the rest of the trip, I first drove out to the Naval base in San Francisco and saw Admirals Ennis Coleman and Tivis Nelson. Nexti drove to the Army testing grounds where General Jim Brodus was conducting thc experiments on the new Supersonic Jet. At that moment Charles Goins and Bobby Litchford were up testing the let. The next morning, I headed for Nevada where a space ship was Just about to take off. The pilots were cousins Danny and Gale Woods. Linda West was going along to cstablish the first outer space school. Other passengers on the trip were Nell Trammell and Wayne Sanders. lwentto seeafootballgame between Contoocook, coached by Joe Cartwright, and the Los Angeles Rams coached by Carl Bailey. The star of the game, Tony Carter, was taken out with a broken leg, My next stop was Bryce Canyon Park, Utah, where Ifound Carolyn Christian, Youth director ofthe most famous resort inthe world. Enjoying the wonderful climate and a rest were Carol Lee, a well-known hand model, and her agent, Jeannine Luck, Whenlreaclied Salt Lake City, I found I had left my best suit back Bryce Canyon, S0 I SIOPPSG in Bl Rag's Clothing Store, owned and operated by Bobby Hurt. Irnight add that I got a beautiful second-hand suit. I came across the noted gossip columnist, Suzanne Wells, and took her out to a new modern drive-in owned by Vivian Thumtan. On the way to Florida, I stopped in Yazoo,Mississippi, for gas at Gene Haston's gas station. In Miami, the Arthur Godfrey show was playing for two weeks. Several of your alumni were on the show: Faye and Robert Whitehead singing one of Sharon Graham's latest hits. Also singing on the show were Ann Pennington, Frances Jones, and Wanda Nixon, Musical director for the show was Jenell Ogg. In Coral Gables, I turned inthe rented'car and bought a used car from the Wayne Johnson car lot. At the horse races, jockey Jimmy Anderson won the Hialeah handicap. I might add that I stayed in the Hotel Poinsetta owned by James Clendening. Lying out beside the pool getting new ideas for his comic strip was Jimmy Johnson. Also enjoying the pool was secret service woman Rachel Roundtree. While there, I had my suit cleaned by the Done Right if Done by tlienl Dunn Cleaners. I headed home to Nashville but stopped first at Oak Ridge to see Julia Witt, She told me that she was doing secret atomic research work. Nashville, at last! The first thing I did was to buy a paper. I read that while I had been gone Frances Knighthad become editor-in-chief and that James Johnson is subscription editor of the Banner. Ialso read that several professors had been hired to teach at Vanderbilt: Professors Tommy Martin, Lloyd McCoin, Marilyn Biberdurf, and Yvonne Tidwcll, Iturned to the sports page and saw that Barbara Collier, secretary for Gorgeous George, is visiting her home town on a vacation. Golf Pro. Chuck Eller is taking all honors at Belle Meade Country Club, Taking the headlines were Mrs, America and Father of the Year. Of course, Juaneese Glover is Mrs. America and Larry Stephenson is Father of the Year. Quite a few of your alumni are still in or around Madison. Tommy Garrett is owner of Cunningham, Inc.,, Hill Appliances, the biggest department store in the south, is owtted by Alan Hill, Edith Roberts is now managing Child's Toggery, Being Vice-President of the Sleep-Rite Mattress Co, makes Gary Loyd very happy. America's largest fumiture company is lucky to have Alvin Scott as President and Linda Sanders as his secretary. Managing l-l3fVSy'S. Cain Sloan, and Caster Knott is Ernest Taylor's job, And last, but not 1935!
