Class Prophecy I had never been to such a boring movie The hero was the type who could do no wrong and who was mistreated by a bunch of burly ruffxans because he had befriended a poor, home less girl It was the typical sob story which I had heard or read at least a hundred times and now I was watching it again in 1964 At last the story dragged to 1ts dismal end And then a voice came out through the air that completely stunned me Presenting for the first time an authentic first hand account of the Seniors of Mad1son I-hgh School of the class of 1954 as they live now in the year 1964 Why this was incredible Those were the kids I went to school with back ten years before And then, the first scene appeared before me A lush tropical scene came on the screen It seemed to be one of those paradise is lands in the Pacific Ocean In the foreground stood a large lavishly furnished house The scene moved to the patio where a young man reclining on a hammock was being fanned by a group of pretty young native girls He was the very picture of one who lived in luxury at its finest Another figure moved mto the p1cture a man who looked like a typical young busmessman on vacation Something about the tall slender figure looked familiar Who could it be? Why It was Jack Forsyth Now I remembered it seemed like I had read something about Jack s success in the field of motion picture production There had even been talk of Jack s running for Congressman from his district But who was the other man the one who seemed to be the owner of this luxurious tropical villa? Only then did I notice the elaborately carved sign at the entrance to the domain The sign read Welcome to the Embree Estate Delmar Embree that s who that man was Talk about some people hav mg luck Ihad time for just one more hurried look before this scene faded and another took its place This scene was a little closer to home having for its setting an office in Moberly This also was an expensively decorated establishment From an mner office I could hear the loud impatient voice of the executive as he dictated a business letter to his secretary Well that Suddenly the door of the inner office burst open and who should dart out but Sue Burke I immediately recognized her since she had changed very little in the ten years since I had seen her It seemed Sue was the private secretary to the Junior executive in this large real estate firm As I watched the office door opened once more and out stomped an irate gentleman with a cigar in his mouth This gentleman began soundly scolding his secretary who was given no chance to defend herself From the general run of the man s angry speech I gather ed that Sue had left the executive s middle name out of the sxgnature of one of his business letters After all he said McCormick is a very distinguished name It adds dignity to the name of Hendren Donald is just a too commonplace name for a person in my position Could it be possxble'7 Could this loud speaking important looking individual be the Donald Hendren we had all known'7 Evidently it was but I had no time for further thoughts as the scene once agam changed on the screen This scene was cold and dreary Icy gales blew the snow along until it almost enveloped a figure struggling along behind a sled which was pulled by a dog team The man s facial features became intelligible as the camera approached him He was easily recognizable as Thomas Embree the boy that always used to be teasing the girls I wondered briefly if they had finally become tired of this and had had Thomas exiled but soon discounted this as bemg very unlikely I Later I discovered that Thomas had become interested in an old map of a lost gold mme in the Klondike so here he was leading the life of a prospector Suddenly the camera left Thomas still struggling against the blizzard and another scene took its place on the screen As this scene took form I saw a prosperous lookmg dairy farm in the Mid West As the camera approached the large modern farmhouse I noticed two tousled headed boys playmg with their genuine Space Rider ray guns on the front porch Just as one mercilessly drilled the other a young man and woman evidently the boys parents appeared on he porch There was somethlng familiar about these poeple Could that man be Marvin Bram mer? It certainly was and apparently he had married his old sweetheart Mary Lou La Force and was now one of the most prominent dairy farmers in the country I '. The next scene was in the grxm forbxddxng inter1or of the state pemtentlary Who on earth could be ln here? I didn t thmk any of the aemors of 1954 had seemed to be that type But my fears qurckly vamshed as xt became apparent that xt wasn t any of the inmates I was supposed to see Instead xt was In the warden s office that the next scene took place At the far end of the room sat a man with hrs feet crossed comfortably on top of the desk This was the warden I supposed but there certamly was no resemblance between thxs man and any of the members of the old Semor class Or was there? Could there be anyone else wlth such a nonchalant attitude as thls man possessed other than Bobby Gandy'7 Soon I decrded that thxs was he Bob had certainly worked up to a responsxble positron ln the last ten years As I reflected on thxs another scene appeared on the screen Thxs scene was in a comfortable lxvmg room ln a small house in Moberly A slim young woman was slttmg at a wr1t1ng desk readmg her mormng rnall As she laid down one of the envelopes I notxced the address Mrs Gerald Burris I looked closely at the dark haxred housewzfe agaln and now recogn1zed her as Emma Embree who was now married to one of the promment young busrnessmen In Moberly When th1s scene faded a decrepxt farmhouse mn the back h1lls of Kentucky came mto vtew Inslde the shanty a small boy was ln bed wrth the measles A solemn lookmg country doctor dressed entlrely 1n black attended to the boy s needs Fmally as the doctor turned to leave the boy s mother thanked hxm for hrs work You know she said Ijust don t know what we country people would do wrthout you Dr Freels Dr Freels But surely that wasnt James Freels Why would he be away down ln Kentucky? But here he was there was no mlstakmg that As I watched the scene once agam changed Thxs scene was also rn Kentucky but th1s time xt was the annual Kentucky Derby I found myself watchxng But rt wasn t the horses we were watchxng xnstead the camera was focused on a man who was watch1ng the race wxth frenzied excitement Shortly he 1umped up from his seat yellxng happxly that h1s horse had won Thxs man was not hard to recognxze xt was Claxr Elsberry I had of course heard of the famous Elsberry Atom1c Bubble Gum which fabulously wealthy he had retrred and now spent hrs t1me engagmg m varxous kxnds of sports, often traveling thousands of miles for a few days of fishxng The next scene took me aboard a huge ocean l1ner the Prxde of Madison On deck the dxstmgurshed lookrng captain strolled calmly about barkmg orders to all within hearmg d1s tance I had a famt xdea I knew that gentleman but I drsmxssed the thought Yet xt seemed I recognxzed those horn rammed glasses Could lt be Dicky Southern? My goodness it was but now he carrled the tltle of Captam Rxchard Southern He had retarned many of his bus messlrke 'U qualltxes whxch I suppose had helped hrm reach the status of captam of one of our most atomic powered sh1ps I left the Pride of Madxson for the txme bexng and found myself :ns :de the Swartz Antique Shop where the oroprxetress Mass Norma .T Swartz was patiently waiting on a customer A sxgn neatly tacked between two old dusty trxvets stated that th1s lxttle shop specxalxzed in medieval vtorks of art The only other clerk I saw ln the dxmly ht shop had a famllrar manner about her After starmg for a few moments whlch Iunderstand IS lmpolltel I dxscovered that thxs salesglrl was none other than Margxe Whlte a former schoolmate of mme Margie seemed to be dressed quzte well to Just be lrvmg on a meager salary from the Ant1que Shop But just then I noticed she was wearlng a wedding rang It was set with huge diamonds flanked by emeralds She had m all probabxlxty marrxed a rxch 011 executxve or hezr to a multx millxon dollar estate Isuspected Margxe Just worked nn the shop for exercise That ended my Jaunt through the antique shop however because Iwas whisked off to Af rxca of all places to where a safarx was preparing for a six months trek znto a region where no wh1te man had ever been The man that I assumed was the leader was shouting orders to h1s dark skmned native porters and was busy gatherxng all the1r supplies together Then the leader flashed a smile at a whxte gzrl m the group I had a vague ldea that I knew both of them but I decxded that none of the people I knew would ever undertake anythmg like thls At that mstant the leader and the girl turned to face the camera Could they possibly be Herbert . . , . ,. . , . . . . , . . . , . , , . .
