Rob and I spent sometime talking of all his old classmates, and we decided to drive up to the old school building to see if it had changed any since we had gone up there every day for several years. We arrived at the building during school hours, but we got out and looked around. We went upstairs and I peeked in the first grade room and there was Verna Houchins, the teacher. She and Dick Southern were still going together, but she couldn't get him to tie the knot. I wandered over to the gymnasium and there was Lionel Smith, Madison's coach. He had his team practicing for state tourney play again. They had won the state tourna- ment for the past three years and he was anticipating another trophy. Two years ago he had married Joyce Elsberry, his high school sweetheart. After visiting with Lionel for a while, Bob and I went back up town and pulled into the old Del Miles garage to get some gas and who came out but Harry Riley. He told me he owned every station in town and several others over the state. He had a little sideline business too--a date bureau. I wasn't interested in that, because he told me he gave each of his men customers a pill that made them sick and then he got the girls We spent a little time with Harry and he told us that Henry Embree was flying Jet rockets to the moon and back on a government contract Henry had also been chosen as The Most Lovable Man Of The Year for three consecutive years Bob and I decided to wander over to the restaurant for a cup of coffee and the waitress was none other than Alberta LaForce She said she owned half intern t in the restaurant but was contemplating on selling out and getting married but she wouldn t tell me who the lucky fellow was Alberta told us that Ardith Farrell was now Dean of Women at the Lnxver sity of Missouri and Shirley Martin was head nurse at the McCormick Hospital and Clinic in Moberly Anna Walters had married before the end of school, but she now lived near Clarence with her husband Mr Lee and their two children Bob and I lingered awhile over our cups of coffee talking of the many epi odes that happened in school concerning these graduates Presently Bob said he had to get back to his work and I knew I had to be on my way so I left the little city as slowly as I had cruised about it happy in my mind that I had learned of the whereabouts of that small class of ten graduates of 1953 Semor Play THE HAPPIER WE LL BE Act Late afternoon of a certain Saturday C Evening of the same Saturday Ac III Sunday Morning Time The present Spring Place The living room the Thatcher home CHARACTERS Henry Thatcher with political ambitions Bob Threlkeld Mrs Thatcher his wife Toan Qwmdeu Judy Thatcher their youngest daughter Ardyth Farrell Anna the housekeeper Shirley Nartin Vivien the oldest daughter Verna Houchlns Babs Bailie her chum Fmma Embree Zelda Reece a triple threat girl Alberta Laporce .Tack Harmon Vivien s boy friend Llonel bmrth Leslie Hall a visitor Hgnry Embree Mr Dexter a political power Harry Rlley Director Mr Smith 1 - 4 tt 'V ' l Y.
