The Madison high school track team enjoyed the best season it has had in many years this season under the able coaching of Daily F. Hill, new to MHS this year. Daily previously coached at Newcastle before coming to MHS. This year, however, was his first attempt at coaching track. The Cubs were beaten by only one team this yearg conference champion Salem. The Cubs whipped Hanover, Central, Austin, Aurora, Lawrenceburg, Brownstown, Batesville, Scotts- burg, and finished second behind Salem in the Southeastern conference. Three of the Cubs qualified to take part in the regional meet of the state tournament. Gayle Thieman in the high jump, Pete Peddie in the pole vault, and Tom Beetem in the broad jump went to the regional meet at New Albany. Pete Peddie, with a leap of ll'3 , and Tom Beetem, with a jump of Z2'l lf2 , a new record, qualified to take part in the state tourney at Indianapolis. Coach Hill has worked for the future and should have an even better team next year. The Madison Cubs linksmen completed their season with a record of Z wins, 4 losses, and 1 t1e. Seniors on the team were Gil Neal and Pete Bersch. M6240 f Edin The Madison Cubs baseball team ended their 1954 season with a successful 8-4 record. Dapper Dan Garlinghouse won 7, lost 3, and appeared in eleven of the twelve contests. Bill Alexander won l and lost 1. The Cubs of '55 will be without Eddie Whitehead, Phil Sherman, Bill Alexander, Jim Lewis, and Dan Garlinghouse.
