CHERRY The 1968 edition of MAHISCO is dedicated with admiration to Mrs. Cherry. Your calm resolution and perspective of life have taken away our anger and substituted the understanding we need. You are a trusted and beloved person. There are many times when young people cannot comprehend things that will benefit them. It is people like you that we will always look up to and be assured of your guidance. We could have offered a gift, presented you with money, but that is too meaningless for you. Instead, we chose to produce this yearbook for you. 9 Fellow Students; ■ Editor We have worked long and hard hours to produce this yearbook for you. I hope that you will treasure it throughout the years to come. This has been a wonderful year at M.H.S. for all of us. We have taken part in one of the best homecomings that Madison has ever had. Although we haven't been very lucky in sports this year, we have the school spirit that goes with every win or loss. For the seniors this has truly been a year to remember. In this 1968 MaHisco I hope we have captured The Signs and Sounds of Our Times. Pat Panaway Editor-In-Chief Lay-Out Sponsor --Mrs. Coody Fellow Students; We have enjoyed working this year on a book that we hope you will cherish for a long time. In the past year there have been many changes both at M.H.S. and in the world. Many new dances; a new clothing style; many different sounds, Bosinova, and the Damee Gent Groove. We hope we have captured some of these in this yearbook, The Signs and Sounds of Our Times. The Madison High School Red Devils were hampered this year by lack of experience, and height. We had only five seniors on the team. This shows we are building for a great season next year. Although we have not done as well as anticipated, the boys have had great spirit with a lot of hustle. This team represented our school proudly and fairly. With our returning lettermen next year we know we will be tough on the floor. INC Madison, Florida It may come as a shock to some Hippies, but living in disregard of conventions while pursuing art and intel- lectualism is older than antimacassars. Hippies even look like old-time Bohemians. Also (they may be disgruntled to learn), there s nothing unrespectable about protest against society. Plato taught, in the 5th Century B.C., that man can move toward the highest good by constant questioning of assumptions. His Republic, a plan for a new social order, was followed a thousand years later by St. Augus- tine’s City of Co l... and a thousand years after that by Sir Thomas Mores Utopia (1516), Campanula's City of the Sun (1623), Bacon's The New Atlantis (1627), and Harrington’s Oceana (1656). For putting such theory into practice, America is un- matched. The Great Seal of the United States—on every dollar bill—proclaims a New Order of the Ages, Novus Ordo Seclorum. No sooner was the Great Experiment launched, than the land sprouted with little experi- ments—agrarian communal colonies from Texas to Massachusetts. These petered out, one way or another. Yet some of the ideas have influenced our culture and world society. What changes the social order most radically is not revolt against society, but practical invention—move- able type, the steam engine, electric light, the auto- mobile, the corporation, radio, advertising, credit buy- ing, the helicopter, computers, nuclear fuel, antibiotics. Billions invested by industry in research and develop- ment are accelerating changes. Both protest and progress stem from discontent with things as they are. But progress happens—undramatic- ally—the result of many small, practical improvements. That’s why the world you inherit will not be like the past, but shaped by an emerging New Social Order. It has been a great privilege for us, the staff, to present this lasting picture of the past. We began work on the annual at the beginning of the school year. We trust the results, which are this book, prove to be for you a complete record of the events, emotions, and desires that transformed our school from an empty shell of concrete and steel into a living, breathing in- stitution of learning. It is the story of those who helped it along: the administration, and the faculty, butmostof it is the story of You, the student who became its life's blood. It is the sincere hope of the staff that you will enjoy and treasure this Mahisco. 179 SENIOR DIRECTORY Pamela Ann Agner (Pam)--FHA--l- -historian, 2-- secretary; FTA—1,2, president; Library--3; Best All Around Homemaker--2.
