Gee Smith that we dedicate this 1965 issue of the Mahisco. As a member of the Madison County School Board for eight years he worked conscientiously and diligently for a better Madison County school system. As a business man and civic leader he always strived for a better Madison community. His work with young people in the summer recreational program and in promoting Little League Baseball has endeared him to our hearts. Although his death was sudden and untimely his memory will remain a guiding light for our lives for many years to come. SCHOOL BOARD - 1962 TOP ROW: Mr. Griffin Bishop, Mr. T. P. What a difference between the little child who entered school a decade ago, and the proud senior-high citizen of today . . . Through the years there have been many changes; and yet, beneath the restless surface, there is much that is permanent. The good land of our county is permanent. Seasons pass, rains come, sunshine flows from heaven, bringing the harvest, but the land itself is much the same - our land, our county, where we have lived, grown up, worked, and played. This is our home; we mold it and are molded by it; the home not only of sophomores, but of all who have been our fellow students here through the years. _ 51 SOPHOMORE OFFICERS President CHIP DURANT Vice-President JACK SCHEOLLES Secretary LAMOYNE HANCOCK Treasurer CLAIRE COOK Parliamentarian PAT VICKERS Randi Ashley Dick Baker Ted Bailey Buster Bass Roger Bell Ed Blalock Freddie Bochnia Jeanie Brinson Johnny Bullard Jerry Burnette Bub Cherry Sarah Clark Linda Collins Claire Cook John Copeland Sarah Copeland Irma Day Gene Dice Dave Driggers Chip DuRant Uveda Eads Mike Edenfield Carroll Fore Dama French 53 Johnny Gibson June Gibson Jack Griffin Wanda Hammock LaMoyne Hancock Jimmie Harrell Sonny Hiers Barbara Hill Lilia Johnson Bill Karstedt Sue Knox Franklin McClamma Sandra McClamma Walter McCullough Sandra McLeod Alton Medders Stevie Medlin Jo Annn Miller Ann Mitchell Johnny Musser Edward Odom Rip Prine . C. C. MATHENY The freshman year ... an end to Junior-high and a bold beginning in the senior high world. Many new decisions have to be made, new experiences come crowding in, and another nine months is quickly filled. Nine months filled with work, with fun, some ups, some downs, but mostly a busy and memorable year. It seems only a short time ago that our freshmen had just come over to the big building. Now its halls and classrooms are as familiar as home and the freshmen are ready to become really contributing members of M. H. S. There is still so much to learn, but the freshmen are well on their way to be- coming, in only three more years, the proud class of ”68”. These were the Junior High Years. As we look back on these years, the only way to describe them is fun”, and that they were. To some waiting impatiently, they are still in the future; to others they are the present. But, to many the Junior High Years are a delightful memory of the past ... a time when mischief was the password; a time when we realized that the opposite sex wasn't too bad after all. This ' v.: ’ - - house speaks eloquently of the plantation era in our liistory when social charm and elegance - ' took their rightful places in our developing pat- tern of living. Its hallowed walls tell of mercy and tenderness shown to wounded soldiers, alone and helpless, far from home and loved ones. The entire edifice stands today in a regal dignity, part and parcel of the glori- ous history of Madison, Madison County, and our beloved Southland. Plays, extemporaneous speeches, prepared discourses, and parliamentary procedure have not been neglected. We subscribe fully to the old dictum, 'Speech' maketh a ready man. To provided opportunities for the development of oral communication skills, the membership ac- cepts invitations from other clubs and organizations to deliver speeches, to debate, and to help out over a broad range of presentations. While trying consistently to develop our- selves, we, at the same time, have striven to be an asset to our school. This program has been based on the conviction that its members have a very ur- gent obligation to serve Madison High School. Our personal development activities include plans to visit the Crime Laboratory in Tallahassee, The Gulf Marine Biology Laboratory near Pensacola, and the Space Launch Site at Cape Kennedy. Of course, there has been a constant effort in school to bring as much scientific knowledge to the students as possible. The club has sponsored several scientific pro- grams, designed to be of interest to students and teachers, during the year. These have provided op- portunities for participation by the membership. We have sponsored a local science fair and participated in the county science fair.
