Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1964 volume:

Foreword In every stage of civilization light has been symbolic of progress and safety. Always in stormy weather the lighthouse has sent out its beams to the relief of distressed mariners. The growth of science has been in lock-step with the multiplied uses of light. The human soul is brought to its fullest powers and possibilities through the advent of spiritual light. Madison High School in a very real sense has sought to be a beacon light casting its rays along the untried ways of the future. It is hoped that the annual for 1963-64 will serve to reflect this light for the inspiration and joy of those who turn its pages through all the years to come. Alma Mater On our city’s Western border, Reared against the sky, Proudly stands our Alma Mater, As the years go by. Forward, ever, be our watchword, Conquered and prevailed, Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, 3 Madison School, all hail. Classes Annual Hey, are those layouts ready? No? What do you mean? Don’t tell me you didn’t know the deadline was today. Combining such abilities as promptness, hard work, and pa- tience, the annual staff has finally met a deadline. Sponsor Sports Staff The information obtained at the Yearbook Work Shop in Gainesville this summer has proved very helpful. With the additional help of our sponsor, Mrs. Browning, and the efforts of the entire staff, we proudly present to you, the students of Madison High School, the 1964 MAHISCO. E Lrnou Co-Editor Copy 5 Faculty Photography ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES SPORTS Table of Contents CLASSES FACULTY FAVORITES ADMINISTRATION W V Dear Seniors: My hearty congratulations to each member of the 1964 Graduating Class upon your completion of the required course of study at Madison High School. As you look back upon the years of your school life I am sure you have many pleasant memories of the experiences you have enjoyed, it is my hope that you will properly ex- press your appreciation to the people who have helped you reach this stage in your life: your parents, teachers, friends and others. The contribution that you have made to your school and community has been a significant one. Let me urge you to continue to prepare yourself for an even greater contribution in the area of your chosen profession. It is my sincere hope that you will enjoy good fortune in the years ahead. Sincerely, Griffin Bishop Superintendent Dear Seniors, I extend to you my wholehearted congratulations and sin- cere best wishes upon graduation from High School. I have a special place in my heart for all of you, since we began our careers at Madison High School together. Many pages have been turned, many words have been spo- ken, and many joys and disappointments have been shared since you entered the seventh grade. Now you have come to the end of your high school ca- reer and to the beginning of your final preparation for your life’s work. Take this knowledge you have gained here, use it wisely, and settle for nothing but the best for yourselves. The road up will be steep and rough but there is room at the top for those who do not falter. I have thoroughly enjoyed our relationship through the years and stand willing and ready to help each and every one of you in any way I possibly can. Sincerely, Principal MRS. ACTIVITIES Homecoming Queen WANDA WELCH A smile from the Queen Wanda awaits the parade 1963 Homecoming Homecoming! The boys swam valiantly down the field in the face of the worst storm in ages, only to lose in a 26 to 14 battle with Lowndes County. Queen Wanda Welch, attended by her charming court, was crowned that afternoon amidst the splendor of flowers and the adoring admiration of her fellow students. 1964 Halloween King and Queen DON WILLIAMS LYNDA HENDRY 104 Big things are being achieved. s t u d e n t S What do we do now? James Persley and Joe Hardy The Madison Red Devils started the season without the services of seven- teen lettermen who were lost through graduation. The boys who were left have been a very determined group of young men with whom I am very proud to be associated. Record wise they have not had a good football team, but in every other sense it has, in my opinion, been very good. They have out played almost every opponent and at no time did they quit” until the game's end. We see you! 117 HOMER SHELLNUT Madison High School must consider itself lucky this year to have had a fairly successful year in the eyes of the sports world. This success is due to much time and effort spent toward the program by our coaching staff. Coach Springer’s and Coach Shellnut’s dili- gent work has paid off with winning football and basketball teams. Speaking for the stu- dents and teachers as well as for our com- munity, we say, “Thanks, Coaches.” --Clarence Johnson 118 JEWETT SPRINGER This year’s B team did not have a successful year as for as won and lost records go; although losing two games, the Baby Red Devil’s held opponents to a total of twenty-five points, the highest number scored was thirteen in the Monticello game. This indicates the fine defen- sive desire on the part of each individual to have a successful ball club. This year’s team was probably the least experienced of any I have coached during my short stay at Madison. In each game, we saw at least two opportunities failed deep in opponents territory. Had we had some much needed experience and football background, I believe, we could have turned these scoring opportunities into touchdowns. I think these boys realize now, that short distances determine first downs, completed passes, and touchdowns. I hope as a goal we gained these insights through experience, and these boys will return next year with their same desire and accomplish some of these short distances. I was blessed by associating with these boys. SECOND ROW: Freddy Smith, Charlie Dickey, Jerry Herring, John Howard, Clarence Johnson. The bright lights in the gymnasium contrasted directly to the warmth and color on the side lines as the Big Red prepared to begin. The Red and White were again matching their skill and ability to come out ahead. . . From the moment of the referee’s whistle the heads of the crowd began to sway from side to side, goal to goal, and the Devil's progress was measured in gasps, sighs, groans, and shrieks. Score- keepers searched frantically for the next highest number as the seconds ticked away. Then came that impossible moment when the shot that would win or lose the game for the Red Devil's rolled care-free around the rim of the basket. Will it or won't it? A roar from the Big Red fans announced that it would ..........................Then the referee's whistle was drowned by the lung-power of the winning team, as the fans, more exhausted than the team, left the gym with an expression of satisfaction. 120 Dwight Hicks Allen Tuten Seniors Junior Varsity Basketball STANDING: Ronnie Sutton, Dennis McClamma, Sidney Johnson, Kenny Walker, Frankie Argenbright, Charles Colvin, Jimmy Tibbals, Jimmy Dawsey, Tommy Bishop, Gary Haire, Edward Odom. A young man sees his Lady, With moonlight in her hair. The silvers and golds of courting, Whence true love doth ensnare. An old man sees his life, With the darkness of despair.
