With grateful appreciation for her untiring efforts, love, and consideration, we humbly dedicate this 1959 MAHISCO to Miss Grace Morgan. She gave us her talents, her time, her counsel, her friendship, and her guidance. Her confidence in us inspired us to try to do our best always. We realize that she was sincere when she said that we were her family. ” She will always remain in our hearts and minds as a dedicated teacher and a true and loyal friend. But neither can we forget.. .that in our teachers we found someone who cared...and had faith in us ...To them we shall always be grateful. MR. GRIFFIN BISHOP Superintendent Senior Class of 1959 Madison High School Madison, Florida Dear Seniors: I offer hearty congratulations to each of you upon graduation from Madison High School. In this day of Explorers, Sputniks, talk of space travel, and other tilings that leave us with a feeling of bewilderment, I challenge you to these three tasks: 1. Have faith in yourself, in the knowledge and experience that you have and can secure in the years ahead. 2. Have faith in your Fellow Man, your neighbors, friends, and associates. 3. Have faith in Almighty God. School people, parents and friends are justly proud of the progress you have made. Keep up the good work. Sincerely, Dear Seniors: May I offer you congratulations upon your greatest accomplishment to date—the graduation from high school. This is not an accomplishment in that you have reached a goal or acquired success. But is an accomplish- ment because you have now laid the foundation, constructed the frame- work, upon which you can in future years build your life. Your degree of success will depend on your ability, based on this foundation, to make the right decisions and choices in the opportunities that you encounter, and your determination, based on this framework, to apply your efforts completely to the construction of an edifice of which you will be proud. Best wishes for your future years, and I hope that the days spent at M.H.S. have furnished the groundwork for a long and successful life. MR. BURCH CORNELIUS Principal Sincerely, [ 6 ] MRS. Not the ruler, nor the greenhorn, he is the worker. He does not receive the attention and teasing given to the younger students or the glory or the privileges of the Senior. As Juniors, Madison High boys and girls work together. They begin to think of the future-- college? Work? Marriage? But these thoughts are lost in a maze of chemistry notes. Certainly they will have many moments to remember. Editing the Devil's Tale , our school paper, the magazine sale, which was very suc- cessful, and taking part in the Junior play, Class Ring are memories they will cling to for a long time. They'll remember most though that lovely night in April when dressed in shimmering gown and handsome tux, they will present to the senior—The Prom. The Junior, perhaps, possesses more than any other class the Spirit that makes him the worker of Madison High School. [ 22 ] Seniors Sponsors Mrs. Ashley Hardee Mrs. Louise Browning OFFICERS: President, Junior Falk: Vice-President, Glen Smith; Secretary, La Nora Zipperer; Treasurer, Fred Bartlem Footprints It's been a long road from that first day when you, as freshman, registered for Madison High School; and now your footprints are turned out of these hallowed doors and into the world. Great and enduring memories go with you--ones that you will cherish all your life--memories of the excitement of getting your Class rings; of Homecoming and the Moonglow dance sponsored by the Seniors; working together on the Annual with deadlines to meet; ordering invita- tions; the Junior-Senior Prom; May Fete; Senior Trip; Graduation and the dance following--and let's not for- get those little personal memories that you all have. But there have been even more important things than your memories when you consider that, with each footprint through your school, some mark and some addition has been left to remind those who fol- low that this year's Seniors have passed this way. You have had not only fun and pleasure, but you have displayed qualities of leadership, cooperation, a sense of responsibility, and high ideals which will serve as an inspiration to those who will follow your footprints. Madison High School Band The Madison High School Band has experienced a successful year of school and community service. In the midst of a rebuilding program the band has been very busy since band members first reported for marching rehearsal last August. Included among the football shows of the 1958 season were; A Salute to Stephen Foster , A Trip to the Moon , A Precision Drill, A Day in the Life of a M.H.S. Student. Some of the years highlights included; The combined Pre-Game show with Greenville Band; Hobo Day , a fund-raising project which netted enough to send the band to the Terry Parker vs. Madison game in Jacksonville by Greyhound bus. The Pecan Bowl, the Live Oak Centennial, The Pine Tree Festival at Perry, F.S.U. Home- coming parade, the clinic in Tampa, the afternoon Christmas Concert, Band Day at F.S.U., the Spring Con- cert, and of course the Band Music Contest. These were the many activities that our band participated in this year. In addition to these various activities, several new instruments were bought. The Elementary Band has grown to thirty-five, and promises to grow larger in the future. The school and community can look with pride to a band program that is working, growing, and providing recreational and educational opportunity, emotional adjustment, and just plain enjoyment for the students of Madisonls Public Schools. RED DEVILS The 1958 season opened for the MHS Red Devils on a low note as the Santa Fe Rebels came from behind to win 13 to 6. There was gloom at MHS as they prepared for P.K. Yonge of Gainsville. The speed, power, and balance of the Red Devils began to show as they defeated P.K. Yonge 13 to 0. A couple of real thrillers followed as we defeated Feroandina Beach 14 to 13, and Perry 7 to 6. The line showed fine defensive strength, and the backfield was improving fast. We won the County championship from Greenville 34 to 13, scoring all five touchdowns on home run plays, with runs of 57, 47, 51, a punt return of 60 and an intercepted pass of 90. The team reached its peak in aggressiveness and desire as they turned back a good Florida High of Tallahassee team 26 to 0. This was a great team effort, and virtually clinched the North Florida Conference Championship. We became official Champions the following week when we defeated Monticello 21 to 0. The entire squad of 37 played, with the second and third units seeing considerable action. The Red Devils were down a little against Live Oak, but had enough to win 14 to 7 for our first over the Bulldogs in many years. This victory gave the team added confidence, and we hit the Terry Parker Braves of Jacksonville wide open to chalk up our eighth win in a row, 13 to 7. The Jacksonville sports writers were much impressed with our team. We quote one of them- The Devils threw up the most solid forward wall the Braves have faced this year, and turned loose what was’probably the finest operating backfield Parker has seen!' We lost a tough one to Marianna 7 to 6 to close out a highly successful season with an 8-2 record, loosing the first and last games. Our second Bowl bid in three years was forthcoming, and we played Jasper in the Pecan Bowl at Monticello. The season had been a long one, and the boys couldn't quite get up for this one. Jasper won in an upset 19 to 18. We wish to give credit to Coach Dick Brown, in his third year at MHS. We also wish to give credit to the Madison School Booster Club for their untiring efforts in our behalf and to Assistant Coach Mack Primm, in his first year at MHS. Varsity Cheerleaders Through this past year, many wonderful and exciting things have happened to the Madison High School Cheerleaders. These eight girls exerted much energy in keeping alive the school spirit at Madison High School. The cheerleaders conducted pep rallies for all football games, traveled to the many football and basketball games, planned and carried out our Homecoming Coronation and Parade, and pre- pared suppers for all visiting cheerleaders. They had the excitement of attending a well-earned bowl game in Monticello, traveling to Jacksonville for the Terry Parker game, and going to Florida High School for the basketball tournament. A second game with Greenville came out 55-35, in favor of the Red Devils. The Devils next defeated Monticello and Live Oak, but lost their second game with Perry, 40-39.
