ARNIF. TATE Vice President JEAN IiODENSTEIN Secretary CAROLYN HOWARD Treasurer JOHN BODENSTEIN Parliamentarian It was the morning of September 1, 1944, at the Madison Elementary school that we, the Senior Class of ’56, had the scare of our lives—the first day at school. Miss Whitty’s bell rang and there it began, the 12 wonderful years of school. The first two years were very exciting because everything we saw and did was entirely new, but by the third year we were really growing up—they transferred us to the “big building.” During the fourth grade we were just too old to play hop-scotch and bring our dolls to school, so we began to act like young ladies and gentlemen. In the spring it was impossible to be composed because we were going to dance the Maypole at the May Fete! The Fifth and Sixth grades reminded us that we were the VIPs and we began counting the days to “graduation.” One of the biggest events that year was the election of King and Queen for the May Fete, who were Tommy Howerton and Anne Folsom, still among the favorites in our class. The first day of school the next year was quite a change; at last we’d made it to the high school, but all the bells, teachers, and new faces—gosh! We wondered if it were as possible to find your way around. By the end of the year we were well acquainted with everything, though. The eighth grade passed without much excitement, except it was hard to believe we’d ever be “dignified” seniors. Then, the ninth grade, Senior High School at last! This year we had our fresh- man dance, and started participating in all the sports. The tenth grade—then the eleventh, we were really and truly Juniors! This year was packed with fun; we sold magazines, had the play and then the night of nights—the PROM, which of course was superior to those in the past and future. Last, but not least, we got our class rings, the thing we’d been waiting for all year. (P) Now we’ve reached our Senior year, already it has surpassed the previous grades. We really started out right, by winning the NFC Championship in Football for the first time since 1946. Besides winning the title, we had six boys who made All-Conference. We’ve found all sorts of things we have to do—order invitations, measure for caps and gowns, produce an annual and many more, but we know it’s all fun. One of the things that makes us so happy is the fact that we can be exempt from those horrible exams. I could write thousands upon thousands of memories we have of our school days that will stay with us for many years, but we can sum them up in this one word, J. P. MORROW President “Wonderful!”
