MR. H.W. ASBELL Dedication As our annual staff struggled through the seemingly hopeless mess of problems that beset us, we were guided and pulled out of our confusion by the tireless and ceaseless work of our sponsors. With deep respect and due appreciation, we, the class of 1951, dedicate this edition of the Mahisco to Mr. and Mrs. Asbell. In Memory of Cookie Gardner MHS A Principal's Messapi Dear Seniors: There is a story of a lad who sat upon a magic carpet and utter- ed some strange word, whereupon the beautiful carpet carried him to the land of his choicest dreams. Your diploma is no magic carpet. Do not expect it to carry you into the realization of your fondest ambition. It has no royal seal. It bears no secret word. It has no magic, propelling force. It will go only where you carry'it. Your diploma is not only a testimonial of achievement thus far, but of your teachers' confidence and good will as well. Why not regard this testimonial as a flag to accompany you in life's battle? But remember, the flag never carries the soldier. He carries the flag. His great ambition is to plant it on.some lofty height where it will proclaim the achievement of it bearer. Your journey up the hill of achievement could be over a pathway of roses but, most likely, it will be a winding, rugged - and perhaps uncharted trail. Such is the way of life. Among the spectators along the way your teachers will watch you with earnest, prayerful interest. When the struggle seems weary and the way unceratin look ever onward and upward - and remember the true soldier's motto: Never let the flag trail in the dust. Best wishes from a heart full of interest in you. Sincerely yours, Supervising Principal MR. H. W. ASBELL Social Studies MR. R. E. BAGLEY Librarian MR. GRIFFIN BISHOP Agriculture MRS. Class Mist ory In September, 1939 the first grade of Madison County became alive with the eager faces which were filled with anxiety as they began their journey through the halls of knowledge. Still clinging to our mothers' hands, we were gathered in one large room where Miss Whittie Dickinson and Miss Mary Bell Waring separated us into homerooms. We well remember the stern hand of Miss May Belle and those numberless pencils cracked over our heads. After several weeks in the third grade we realized we were no longer babies as we didn't have to line up any more. One of the greatest sports in elementary school was sliding down the rusty fire es- cape. Our mothers had no little concern over the dresses and trousers worn out. The height of our fourth grade activities was crowned with the Maypole Dance. The memories of the fifth grade are many: One of our fondest is Mrs. Rude's reading to us. When we became sixth graders, we were kings of the Elementary School. To fill the place of Junior Queen and King for May Fete were Margaret Cantey and Joe Gay. Double gloom hit the class this year; Mary Catherine and Margaret each broke her leg. Early one September morning in 1945, our peaceful vacation was interrupted for nine months. We had to go back to school! Miss Picolla Jackson and Mrs. Ruth Gibson gave us much able guidance as we entered Junior High. The eighth grade was climaxed with a historical tour. This tour inspired our sponsors, Mrs. Browning and Mrs. Bruner, to write a play, which we were thrilled to produce in place of our mid-term examination. Party makes the world go round, and we certainly went round in our freshman year. The Cherry Lake students joined us in the Dungeon. The Dungeon was willed to us by the class of 1946. Our sponsors for the ninth and tenth grades were Miss Florence Gatlin and Coach Thorp. The “Thing happened in the tenth grade! Bill Gross was the new addition. He be- came allied with John Waring and Ray Coffee. They have done everything in the cata- log from shooting spit balls to calling special assemblies. Things will be different at M.H.S. next year and we shall miss them. Lee and Pinetta students swelled the ranks in the eleventh year. Thirty of the group were allowed in the outer world—homeroom upstairs— behind the Iron Curtain of the home economics room while the others were left in the Dungeon. Our first realization that we were full-fledged juniors and that we were beginning the end of our high school days came when we received our rings. The cap pistol wars and rhythm band did not keep The Boarding House Reach from being a success. The Dungeon would take on a bright red glow as the students innocently teased Mr. Asbell about Miss Campbell. Affairs took on a more serious nature as the two sponsors formed a united alliance. A Dream Come True! This was our Prom. Candlelight, flowers, beautiful girls, hand- some boys and a review of the past were all ours on this night of nights. As the senior year began, many familiar faces were missing among these was Mr. Rude. We felt that we were really ready to leave when we were measured for caps and gowns. The senjor activities are many. Among these are: ordering invitations and diplomas, producing an annual, presenting class night, and leaving something tangible to the school. One of the most enjoyable activities was the senior play. Even though the senior play, Here Comes Charlie, did not encounter as many difficulties as the junior play, it was equally successful. As we approach the end of high school years we wish to express our gratitude to all those who have encouraged us, worked with us, and guided us intelligently and spirit- ually along our way.
