HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1950 One bright, shining morning around September I, 1938, a group of boys and girls assembled in front of what we later found to be Madison Elementary School, to begin our climb up the long stairway of education. At the sound of the bell, we marched up the front steps into the building to be assigned to our rooms under the supervision of Miss Whittle Dickinson and Miss Mary Belle Waring. School had begun at last. The following seniors answered that first roll call: Jack Austin, Chandler Rains, Joe Pinson, Emma Jeane Folsom, Margaret McCullough, Eva Mae Shaw, Jackie Smith, Betty June Welch, Maurice Cone, A. T. Gibson, William Rowe, Frank Rykard, William Smith, Eleanor Duval, Joyce Gross, Margie Hamilton, Mary Lois Loper, and Jeane Stewart. As our first year came to an end we were surprised at how much there was yet to learn, but we were willing, and we faced the coming year with pleasure. Our teachers in the second grade were Mrs. Mary Love Walker and Miss Louise Davenport. New students coming into our class were Milburn (Buck) Gibbs and Grace Dunlap. Our greatest accomplish- ment for this year was the ability to tell the time of day, and our greatest tragedy was Chandler Rains breaking his arm. At last the time came when we were to begin the third grade, over in the big building. How grown-up we were! Our instructors were Miss Ruby Vann and Mrs. Marie Wadsworth. Our roll was increased by the addition of Ruby Cruce. A few of our old stu- dents did not return. Successful through this term, we were oromoted to the fourth grade. The new teachers were Mrs. Clyde Cantey and Miss Grace Tyson. Students coming in were Juanita Moon, Betty Rathel, and Audrey Oliver. This year was very exciting for we were going to dance the May Pole in the May Fete. Gosh! How quick you grow up! When we were advanced to the fifth grade, we found our teachers were Mrs. Kathleen Bullard and, for the first semester, Mrs. Frank Davis. Mrs. Davis found it impossible to be with us after Christmas, so Mrs. Julia Bryant took her place. Soon Mrs. Bryant had to leave us and Mrs. Rude took her place. Be- fore long, Mrs. James Copeland relieved Mrs. Rude, and before school was out, Mrs. Bryant came back to our rescue. What an ordeal that was! Members added to our class were Merlene Phillips, Jo Ann Mc- Daniel. We succeeded in going up another step to the sixth grade. This year our sponsors were Mrs. Carlena Dickin- son and Miss Louise Watson. Happy days were in store for us because we were going to graduate and actually receive a diploma. This year we were hon- ored by having the little May Queen and King selected from our class; they were Jeane Stewart and Tommy Martin. Before we knew it, the time came when we would begin the seventh grade. This was the year we had been looking forward to, because we would be able to have two teachers and also change classes. Our plans were somewhat upset. Our teachers for this year were Mrs. Ruth Gibson and Mrs. Mildred Arnow. Mrs. Flick, Mrs. Rude, Miss Lucille Walker, and several substitutes helped us through the year. Along with the different teachers, we had the following new stu- dents to enter: Herman Ziegler, Louise Kelly, Jimmy Devane. The eighth grade found us sponsored by Mrs. Louise Browning and Mrs. Mildred Bruner. We had only one new student, Mildred Register. With the help of our teachers we were promoted to the Fresh- man class. (Continued) AVI| « .V. i wkir) 'W -Ni ) -• «O W(l| u, UllliS i ««« uwij ■ {1 U! BRDadell Brothers wa [The History IV clas V w’rite Mr. Asbell’s HISTORY (continued) As the ninth grade rolled around, we found that we were Freshmen in High School. Here we succeeded in getting for our sponsors, Mrs. Alice Brown and Miss Elizabeth Hunter, who stuck by our sides through- out the rest of our school career. This year we were sponsors of our first big production. The Minstrel Show. We were honored this year in having Cherry Lake students in our class; they were Leonard Thur- man, Barbara Ann Lamberson, Vernel Champeaux, Leila Cason, and Doris Hutto. Jimmy Devane came back in also, but from another school. At last we had become Sophomores. This year we were again able to be sponsors of a Black Face Minstrel. Our class was increased by new students, Porky Wynn and Greta Jones. Also we lost some stu- dents this year. We were at last Juniors. This was the year we had all been waiting for. Our first disagreement came over our class rings, but despite it all we finally selected one. The next big adventure was the Junior Play, The Whole Town's Talking, which made us feel like Twentieth Century-Fox Stars, in our first big play production. Our last but most memorable event was the Junior-Senior Prom. Tired but gay-hearted, we diked ourselves out and headed for The Show Boat, for the biggest night in our Junior year. Lee and Pinetta students joined us this year: Bobby Hol- lingsworth, Elmer Sevor, Jackie McCullough, Elouise Provan, Forrest Brown, Joyce Arnold, Relma Bass, Grace Dunlap, Myrtice Hale, Betty Jean High, Clif- ford Law, Eva Mae Shaw, Frances Stokes, Gwendolyn Sevor, Frankie Williams, Osie Mae Williams, Bobbie Jean Malone, John Dixon, Charles Milford, Glenn Lewis, and Mary Ann Davis. We were at last dignified Seniors. We started off the year with the long hard struggle of publishing an annual. To add to our difficulties we had to learn to call Miss Hunter, Mrs. Sims. Another difficult job was the presentation of our Senior play, Oh, Brother! which was held in March. The month of May seems quite full with the May Fete, Senior Day, Baccalaureate, and, last of all, Graduation, which is the end of our school days. This year Richard Brock- man joined our class. These are just some of the marks of memories which we will never forget, for now we have finished our High School days.
