Miss Edna Mae McLinn, secretary to the principal at Madison High School, recently retired after more than forty four years of service to the district. Miss McLinn began her career in the old high school on third street immediately after graduation and has been a part of the many changes that have taken place in our district. She has worked with many principals and has been a very reliable resource person to the administration, faculty and students. Her dependability and knowledge of how the high school functions will be missed by all of us. Miss McLinn plans to do a little traveling and continue to provide care for her mother. We wish her many years of happiness and enjoyment in her retirement. Mr. J. Alan Gardner (Mr. G. to his students) began teaching in the Dunbar School in 1946. After teaching business courses there for many years, he moved to the Madison High School in 1966. It was at the high school that he sponsored the school newspaper and taught business courses. Mr. Gardner has been teaching in our community for 40 years and has taught as many as three generations from the same family. Along with his teaching duties, Mr. Gardner has held the office of City Treasurer for the City of Venice for the past few years. 5 Mr. Gardner likes to eat barbecue and has developed his own special sauce. In his retirement he plans to do a litter more traveling.

It was during his undergraduate work that he became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. Mr. James began his career as a teacher and coach at the Dunbar School in 1947 and in 1959 was named principal of this school. From that position he moved to the Central Administration office as an Adminis- tration Assistant in 1969 and Assistant Superintendent in 1973. It was from this last position that he retired in 1985. Mr. James was recently appointed by the Board of Education to represent Madison School District on the Committee to study Consolidation. 4 Even in retirement Mr. James continues to perform his many deeds as a great humanitarian and as always demonstrates a great concern for young people.
