Edwin Barton It is with deep affection and gratitude that we, the Senior Class of 1971, dedicate the Madisonian to a former teacher, Mr. Edwin Barton. Mr. Barton was born on December 3, 1910, and received his Bachelor of Education in 1933 from Southern Uni- versity where he majored in English. Before coming to Madison High School in the fall of 1952, Mr. Barton taught elsewhere for nine years and served his country in the United States Air Force from July, 1942, to June, 1946, where he reached the rank of Captain. When he was discharged from the service, he remained in the reserves where he reached the rank of Full- Colonel before his death in the fall of 1970. Mr. Barton was loyal to his chosen profession and was a member of such professional organizations as the Amer- ican Education Association, Illinois Education Association, and Madison Classroom Teachers Association. He was Vice-President of the Madison Classroom Teachers Association at the time of his death. To the many students who have graduated from Madison High School, Mr. Barton will long be remembered for his great leadership in the area of Senior English and Speech. To many in the Tri City area he will long be remembered for his efforts in directing some of the finest talent shows ever to be presented by a group of high school students. We shall all miss his friendliness, his great personality, and his example of patriotism and leadership. 4
