Mr. Barton was born on December 3, 1910, and received his Bachelor of Education in 1933 from Southern Uni- versity where he majored in English. Before coming to Madison High School in the fall of 1952, Mr. Barton taught elsewhere for nine years and served his country in the United States Air Force from July, 1942, to June, 1946, where he reached the rank of Captain. When he was discharged from the service, he remained in the reserves where he reached the rank of Full- Colonel before his death in the fall of 1970. Mr. Barton was loyal to his chosen profession and was a member of such professional organizations as the Amer- ican Education Association, Illinois Education Association, and Madison Classroom Teachers Association. He was Vice-President of the Madison Classroom Teachers Association at the time of his death. To the many students who have graduated from Madison High School, Mr. Barton will long be remembered for his great leadership in the area of Senior English and Speech. To many in the Tri City area he will long be remembered for his efforts in directing some of the finest talent shows ever to be presented by a group of high school students. We shall all miss his friendliness, his great personality, and his example of patriotism and leadership. 4 Fred Riddle Superi nte nde nt David Byrd Wade James Administrative Asst. We are grateful for their help in setting us in the right direction for our future. They are also responsible for setting up our Career Day Program. Government Day is that day of the year when members of Mr. Kostencki's American Problems Class take over the various offices of the City and run the City for one day. TALENT SHOW The talent show, under the direction of Mr. Heisner and Miss Daggert, is made up of acts that are as- sembled by the students and then presented to the teacher sponsors through tryouts. If the student is successful and his her performance is accepted they have an opportunity to perfect the act through prac- tice sessions. At a predetermined date the various acts are arranged into a program for presentation to the public. The talent show has for many years been a favorite attraction at M.H.S. General Business Chemistry I Typing II Bookkeeping Home Economics Office Practice JR.-SR. PROM LIBRARY SHOTS CLASS SHOTS Wow, what a piece of gossip! FALL Fall is--meeting old friends in the excitement of a new session together, the tempo hastened by the briskness of the air and the crunch of new fallen leaves beneath our feet--of broken shouts of laughter from people caught up in the spirit of competition. The mood is quick as water racing swiftly ahead of the com- ing cold. m A time for giving. G.A.A. Initiation Our school actors WINTER The hush of new fallen snow invites everything to come inside. It creates a silent world for endless hours of study--thoughts turn in- ward for moments of quiet meditation. You listen plain- tively to the melancholy notes of a guitar as you sit nestled in the warmth and glow of a crackling fire. Has he been tardy 3 times yet? They're innocent? We're ready for the cold. Do you need some help ? Hold that chair steady! I wish it were spring. SPRING The spring rain washes the world clean and puts sparkles on the flowers in your back yard. And you have a new dress made out of pink blossoms for the school prom. Sitting on the grass with the sun warm on your shoulders you're thinking about the baseball game--anxious to feel the smoothness of the bat in your hand, hoping to barely make it home by sliding--smiling as the dirt and gravel scratch and brush at your skin—and you don't mind, it's spring. What k Does Spring fc Do to You1? SUMMER Relieved that your last exam is over, you've cleaned out your locker sav- ing that ragged note from your special friend. A little sadly you said good- by and best wishes to the graduates. Tomorrow, you'll head for the pool and spend the afternoon dreaming of all the things you want to do during the long and lazy summer that stretches out ahead. Gossip, gossip, who knows the most.
