Young ACTIVITIES ORGANIZATIONS The Editorial Staff consists of a group of Seniors responsible for the organizing of committees to put together your 1970 yearbook. They are under the supervision of Mr. Lee Ashby. Having spent many hours working to make this a memorable year- book, we think they should be given special recognition for this work. Paula Broadway Activities Editor Daniel Osburn Sports Editor Vicki McQuay Charles Jackson Debbie Palcheff Business Secretary Business Manager Advertisement Editor This group of Seniors, with the help and guidance of their sponsors, have worked many hours in making decisions, taking pictures, originating ideas, and putting together this 1970 yearbook. The Madisonian Staff ex- presses their sincere thanks to the sponsors and everyone who has helped to make this year- book a success. Madisonian Staff National Honor Society The National Honor Society encourages character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The members try to create a greater desire to learn and to bring about more enthusiasm for scholastic achieve- ment. Membership is made up of Sophomores, Jun- iors, and Seniors main- taining a B average or higher. The 1969-70 officers are: Bob Scott, President; Charles Pogorelic, Vice- President; Jackie Wright, Secretary; and Vann Ford, Treasurer. Mr. Barton is the sponsor. The Latin Club, sponsored by Mr. Mehelic, serves a very important purpose in our high school. It provides activities which are both educational and entertaining and which serve to increase the Latin students' appreciation of the Roman culture and its influence on Western civilization. The 1969-70 officers are: Sharon Leleniewski, President; Janis Stewart, Vice-President; Sharon Chapman, Secretary; and Jon Gardner, Treasurer. Latin Club 46 The Pep Club acts to sup- port the Athletic Department at Madison Sr. High School. They raise money for the team and for the cheerleaders to go to Summer Camp by sponsor- ing various drives. They back the team with school spirit by cheering them on to victory. The Pep Club also chooses the cheerleaders. The Pep Club sponsor is Miss Spurrier. The Girl's Athletic Association was organized to promote co-oper- ation and sportsmanship. G.A.A. stresses the importance of health and education. The main goal of G.A.A. is to prepare girls to take their places in the community. The 1969-70 officers are: Gail Dandridge, President; Paula Broad- way, Vice-President; Arlene Hale, Secretary; Piper Dandridge, Trea- surer; Dale Lewis, Sports Manager; and Joycelyn Gardner and Terry Planitz, Point Captains. Junior and Senior G.A.A. members Freshman and Sophomore G.A.A. members Each year the G.A.A. ini- tiates the new members by making them do things such as dressing out of the ordinary and collecting pennies from the other students. This proves to be fun for both the new and old members. A party was held for the initiates after school the day of the initia- tion, at which the initiates performed skits and were made official members of G.A.A. The Trojan Flashes Staff, sponsored by Mr. Gardner and Mr. Gunderson, is composed of those students who are inter- ested in bettering their under- standing of writing and edit- ing. They must originate new gimmicks and create enthu- siasm among the students, besides collecting advertise- ment ads, writing the articles, and mimeographing the pub- lications. Foxie's Madhouse! ! ! The Student Council was designed to better the school. It tries to help uphold the school standards and to help make the school, in itself, a better institution for educa- tion. The Student Council represents the entire student body, so that all opinions and views can be heard and pre- sented to the principal and the school board. There is a representative from each of the home rooms in the Student Council. It is sponsored by Mr. Loy. The 1969-70 officers are: Charles Pogorelic, President; Charles Jackson, Vice-Presi- dent; Debbie Palcheff, Secre- tary; and Tony Young, Trea- surer. Student Council Future Homemakers of America is a national organi- zation of students who study home making in schools throughout the country. They work together for better and happier homelives for every- one. They believe that help- ing to make happy homes, now and in the future, is essential to keep our country strong and safe. Miss Drickens is the FHA sponsor. Future Homemakers of America The Library Club, under the direction of Mr. Pickett, gives each member a chance to better their understanding of the library's content. It also helps them to learn how to find in- formation on various subjects; and to render their services to students in need of help. mm The Jr. Red Cross Club assists the Granite City Chapter of the National Red Cross in all projects, especially in sending ditty bags to several, and Christmas cards to even more of our boys in Viet Nam. Below the club is working on an Easter project: decorations for Scott Air Force Base. Officers for the 1969- 70 year are: Paula Broad- way, President; Terry Planitz, Vice-President; and Patti Steiner, Sec- retary'-Treasurer. Mrs. Williamson is the Clubs' sponsor. JR. RED CROSS Mrs. Folkerts and Mr. Steptoe are in charge of the guidance depart- ment. We are all grateful for their help in setting us in the right direc- tion for our future ambitions. This is Mrs. Folkerts first year at M.H.S. We wish to extend a cor- dial welcome to her, and con- gratulate both of them on their fine work. We, the Senior class of 1970, want to extend a special thanks to a very special person. Mr. Lee E. Ashby has not only been a fine teacher to many of us, but also a special friend to all of us. He is con- cerned about everyone and will do everything he can to help a student when asked. Mr. Ashby sponsors the Editorial Staff for the yearbook each year. This is a tedious job in itself. Be- sides this, he is one of our best teachers in the Business Education field. His influence will cause us to achieve high goals. We are proud to know him and are sure that every- one who knows him feels the same. Mr. Ashby has never failed to help a graduate when they are in need of guidance. He is a teacher we know we can always depend on, should we need help in the years to come. For all these reasons, and more, we want to thank you, Mr. Ashby, and give you special recognition for your fine work. We are extremely grateful. KEY TO BABY PICTURES 1. Jo Ann Krawiecki 9.
