GEORGE E. THOMAS Mr. Thomas began his teaching career at Madison Senior High in 1930. In the year 1964, after devoting many years of service to the school, he plans to retire. He says he is leaving his position here with regret, but with not nearly as much regret as we, the students, feel in seeing him go. Because of the hard work and time which he gave to our high school in past years, we are very proud todedicate the 1964 Madisonian Yearbook to Mr. Thomas and to extend our gratitude to him for all he has done. He will always be respected, admired, and remembered by all of us as a won- derful teacher. CHESTER L. MCMANAWAY HENRY M. BAUCUM WILLIAM G. SCHREIBER WENSEL L. BROWN Superintendent JOHN N. They have spent many long and tedious hours working on this book, and they will tell you that it is hard work but in the end it is worth while. We of the yearbook staff wish to thank the yearbook sponsors who were so help- ful in making this yearbook a success. Under the guidance of their sponsors and Mr. Lee E. Un- der the supervision of the club's sponsor, Mademoiselle Bethel, it has become a worth while organization. This club has played a very vital role in the activity program of Madison High School by selling class pins to all the students. The officers of the French Club for '63 - '64 are: L. Rash Pres,; N. Jackson, Vice-Pres,; P. Jack- son, Sec.; and H. Williams, Treas. 52 THE LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club is composed of girls, who because of their scho- lastic standing, are able to help students with various library servi- ces, under the super- vision of Miss Folmer, our school librarian. This year some mem- bers of the Library Club went along as guests of the Junior Red Cross to the Owens Glass Fac- tory in Alton. AUDIOVISUAL CLUB The newest club at Madison High School is the Audio-Visual Club. Under the direction of Mr. J. Naglich, the mem- bers of this club learn how to operate and care for such things as; movie projectors, tape recor- ders, and the office in- tercom system. This worth while or- ganization is indeed an asset to our school. 33 RED The Junior Red Cross is a junior hel- per to the National Red Cross. The chief purpose of this group is to contribute fin- ancial support and service to the Nat- ional Red Cross. This year the members of the group and their sponsor Miss Folmer took an interesting tour of the Owens Glass Factory at Alton. Each year the club chooses two girls to go to the Junior Red Cross camp. The two girls selected to go this summer were THE FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA The Future nurs- es of America is com- posed of girls plann- ing fo enter the field of nursing after graduation from high school. Helping to make happy Homes, now and in the future, is a vital factor for the democracy of America. TALENT SHOW COMMITTEE This fine group of students chosen by the director, Mr. Edwin Barton, staged another wonderful Talent Show. These students work- ed very hard to get the Talent which our Madison High School stu- dents have in abundance. We are all proud of these students and ex- press our thanks to them for keep- ing up with the tradition of fine Talent Shows at M.H.S. The follow- ing people made the Talent Show of 1964 possible: Seated from 1. to r. are; L. Rash, B. Kalchoff, Mr. Barton, B. Clinton, and B. J. Dutko. Those standing from 1. to r. are- C. Zahm, E. Haddock, Pres. At left Pres. M. Haddock re- ceives a letter from Mrs. Merklebach, the association's sponsor. The Girls' Athletic Association is established to promote good sports- manship and interest in Athletics. The G.A.A. has been pretty busy this year by selling postal cards to buy pins and letters. Each year the association initiates new members which is a lot of fun for the new girls and enables them to meet new friends. The G.A.A. introduced a new pro- gram this year by inviting girls from the local elementary schools to come to their Play Night. The purpose of this Play Night was to arouse an interest of athletics and sportsmanship for the students entering school this Fall. Also this year, the members were invited to Carlisle and Cahokia, Illinois for their annual Play Days. PEP CLUB From left are Ass't. Sec., J. Thomas; PointCapt., J. Marsala, Sponsor, Mr. Wayne P. Carlisle; Vice-Pres., C. Zahm; Sec., M. Gnojewski; and Pres., B. J. Dutko. One of the most popular organizations at Madison High school is the Pep Club. It is one of the largest and liveliest clubs at M.H.S. We are sure that the football and basketball teams appreciate the strong support that they receive from this fine organization. The members are to be commended for their fine sense of sportsmanship and co-operation which they have displayed. This year the organization gave sock hops for the students after the football games. The members were hard at work making money to buy green blazers for the club by selling seat cushions. PEP CLUB OFFICERS To the left are the '63 - '64 off- icers of the Pep Club. They were hard at work this year organizing committees; getting buses for out-of-town games and cheering for their team to win. ' M” CLUB This organization was established to help the Education teacher, Mrs. Merklebach, dur- ing classes. These girls have the responsibility of taking roll, leading calisthenics and other various services. From 1. to r. are; E. White, B. Browning, D. Smith, J. Signaigo, M. L. Svezia: B. Massie, B. J. Konuch, L White, G Skinner. John Summers ... Sr. End Lester White ... Sr. Halfback The Big Green started out their 1964 football season by playing host to the Edwardsville Tigers. Our Trojans fought hard but could not stand up to the Tigers size as they came out on the short end of a 45-12 score. After their poor showing against Edwardsville, the Trojans traveled to Granite City. Before the game Granite's coach told newspaper reporters that they should beat them by sixty, but they were lucky to come out of the game a 14-0 winner. The Trojan defensive line played a brilliant game as they held the Warrior offense to less than fifty yards rushing in the second half. Troian halfback Nick Podoba ended his football career abruptly when he broke his foot in the fourth quarter. Next in line for the Trojans was the Cahokia Commanches. Last year's Midwestern Conference Champions, and hoping to repeat this year, struck twice in the second quarter and once in the third. The Trojan offense could not move, and the score ended with Cahokia on top 19-0. When the Trojans traveled to Dupo for their next game, they had victory on their minds. That thought of victory showed in the first half as Paul Lusk, Mike Konuch, Gary Skinner, and John Summers tallied touchdowns to lead the Trojans to a 27-0 half - time advantage. Paul Lusk scored once more in the second half to make the final score 33-0. The Big Green de- fensive line, led by John Onesky, Ted Nizinski, and Jack Miller, played another bang up game. Bethalto's Eagles came to Madison's field for the Trojans' next game. The Trojans struck first to make the score 7-0. A fumble led to a touchdown for the Eagles, but the extra point failed, and Madison still led 7-6. In the second half Bethalto's line broke through to block a Trojan punt, the ball traveling out of the end zone for a safety, which made the score 8-7 in favor of Bethalto. The Trojans were not to be denied as they drove the length of the field to score and win the game 13-8. John Onesky .... Sr. Tackle Ted Nizinski .... Sr. Tackle Mike Konuch .... Sr. Halfback Nick Podoba .... Sr. Halfback Alton Rendell. . . Soph. End Paul Lusk .... Sop Fullback Roxana played host for the Big Green's next game. The game was played in a steady downpour that proved to be fatal for the Trojan offense. The Troians came close to the goal line on a couple of occasions, but could never cross it. The game finally ended with Roxana on top 18-0. The following Friday night the Trojans traveled to Highland for their last Midwestern Conference game. The Trojan defense faltered as the Trojans were defeated 26-14. Jerseyville's Panthers came to the Trojan field for Madison's last game. The Panthers were a strong favorite to run over our Trojans by three or four touchdowns, but the Big Green defense did a masterful job as they held Jersey- ville to only thirteen points. The Trojans scored once, and were stopped short on one occasion. The game ended with Jerseyville on top, 13-7. Offense Gets Ready to Move Several Trojans received post season honors this year. Tackle John Onesky and quarterback Gary Skinner were selected to the first team All-Conference. Paul Lusk, Sophomore fullback, received Special Mention All-Conference. Those receiving Honorable Mention on the team were Alton Rendell, end, Ted Nizinski, tackle, Ezell Mallet, guard, Jack Miller, guard, and Bob Clinton, center. Nice Catch, Mike Defense M. H. S.
