The mem- bers are elected by their respective classes at the beginning of the school year. Their job is to represent their classes in the council meetings, to pass school laws, and to plan some school activities. This year they in- stituted the Student Gov- ernment Day to help bring about greater understanding of our democratic form of gov- ernment. Those who were e- lected as officers for the Student Council for ’61-’62 are: Paul Czervinske, President; Don Freeman, Vice- President; Sandi Consiglio, Secretary; and Ervin Mueller, Treasurer. S u dent (Council i o n a i Jdon or S o c i e t y This organization is composed of students maintaining a B ave- rage or higher, this or- fanization was estab- ished to create a great- er desire to learn, and it has succeeded in bringing about more en- thusiasm for scholastic achievement. Members of the society with their service, leadership, and high standards are honored and highly rec- ognize their scholastic achievement. This organization is a valuable asset not only to the school but also to the community and success in the future. Honor Society offi- cers for '61-’62 were Kathy Bogleff, Pres.; Billy Smock, V.-Presi- dent; Faith Nizinski, Treasurer; and Penny Maeras, Secretary. Here are the sen- iors who made your '62 yearbook possible. They typed, took pictures, pasted the pictures, originated ideas, select- ed and finally put to- gether your yearbook. They had to spend many long and tedious hour's working on this book. Many of the students don't realize the work involved in making a good yearbook, but ask anyone of the students on this page who work- ed on it and they will tell you, it’s a real job and a hard one at that. We of the yearbook staff wish to give our thanks to the yearbook sponsors who were so helpful and we wish to express a sincere de- si re that the students who compose the year- book next year will WORK HARD to correct our errors so that their yearbook will be even better than ours. Re- member your job and do it to the best of your ability, your yearbook will be just as good as you make it. The school paper the. Trojan is published by a group of hard work- ing students. This group of students put in hours and hours of hard work right up to the hour the paper is to go on sale. Five six-weeks editions were turned out, and the last week of school a special senior edition was turned out. The stu- dents write the articles for the paper, run them off, staple them together and finally sell them; every part that makes up of school paper is done by the students. The Trojan staff are editor, Connie Galwell; Co-editor, Kathy Bogleff; and re- porters: Susan Beville, Mary Ann Bucher, Diana Fox, Mike Graville, Ann Hodges, Joanne Maykopet, Ervin Mueller, Sheila Nicholas, Faith Nizinski, Billy Smock, and Joan Williams. The Future Nurses of America Club is an organization composed of girlsplanning to enter the field of nursing after graduating from high school. It is a rather new club only two years old. During the year the club had several guest speakers, viewed films and had discussions on various aspects of nurs- ing. Since its influence extends far beyond high school, the Future Nurses of America Club is one of our most valu- able organizations. The officers for the year were: Donna Dowthitt, Pres.; Annita Patterson, Vice-Pres.; Donna Achor, Sec.; and Cheryl Slaby, Treas. if re urded meric a The Junior Red Cross is a junior helper to the National Red Cross. It is the duty of the Junior Red Cross to contribute financial support and service to the National Red Cross. During the year they help a membership drive, distributed, Na- tional Red Cross pins, folders, and envelopes. At Christmas time the girls made and bought dolls and toys to give to the Salvation Army for distribution to theneed- y. To climax the year they choose two girls to go to J u n i o r Red Cross camp. They are Polly Wood and Susan Beville. Officers for this year were Faith Nizinski, Pres.; Barbra Dutko, Vice-Pres.; Jo Elaine Planitz, Sec.; and Polly Wood, Treasurer. Our helpful sponsor was Miss Folmer. This fine group, se- lected at the beginning of the school year, serves as the background for our great Talent Show under the direction of Mr. Barton. Rounding up talent was first on their agenda, and then came the job of produc- ing the show. Staging, advertising, financing, and promotion were carried out efficiently and orderly to make the show a smashing suc- cesses usual. Our thanks to the committee and cast for adding this show to our list of hits and for helping make this yearbook possible by turning the proceeds over to the yearbook. The members of the Talent Show Committee were: Doris Ledbetter, Wally Weidner, Katie Wright, Paul Czervin- ske, Tina Signa igo, Kathy Bogleff, Emily Toffant, Joanne Maykopet, and Sheila Nicholas. Oa tent Shoiv Co m m i tt ee ren ch Among the newest of our organizations is The French Club, under the fine supervision of Mademoiselle Bethel. Providing enjoyment for its members and also striving to bring about a better understanding of the French language, the club’s ideals are centered around these aims; during the meet- ings French records are played to acquaint the students with the true French sounds, and French newspapers are read and translated. The fine members of this organization play a very worthwhile part in Madison High School's activity program. 42 The Madison Li- brary Club is composed of freshman, sopho- more, junior and sen- ior students who, be- cause of their scholastic standing, are able to contribute time toward giving their fellow stu- dents competent library service. For this ser- vice the members re- ceive pins during their senior year. The award designates the number of years of service and any office w h i c h the member held during his high school attendance. By helping each student to secure that which will best aid him in getting his assigned lessons, the Library Club be- comes an invaluable asset to the school. rci rij J4 om emaLerA o l -A ni eri c a The Future Home- makers of America is an organization working together for better and happier home life for everyone. We think that helping to make happy homes, now and in the future, is the most im- portant thing that you can do for democracy. One of the most popular organizations at Madison High is the Pep Club. It is one of the largest and loudest clubs at M.H.S. We're sure the football and basketball teams are glad of its strongsup- port. The members are to be commended for their fine sense of sportsmanship and co- operation which they have displayed. The officers elect- ed for the '61-'62 term were:Cheryle Dion, President; Tina The beau. Vice Presi- dent; Charles Collins, Secretary; Penny Maeras, Treasurer. Besides the fine support the Pep Club displayed for the team, they were active in other ways. A sock hop was given by the Pep Club. The Pep Club filled a season with a lot of ac- tivity and has really proved its worth. p.p cu The newest club at Madison High School is the Audio-Visual Club. Under the direction of Mr. Naglich, the mem- bers of this club learn how to operate and take care of such things as: movie projectors, tape recorders, and the office intercom system. This worthwhile organization is indeed an asset to our school. 44 Jluclio- Vi Midi C(u( Q. J. J. rjLea tier dll i The G.A.A. is an or- ganization established tc promote good sportsman- ship among girls and to further their interest in athletics. It also teaches them the basic fundamen- tals needed to enjoy these sports. The officers for the year '61-'62 were: Joan Williams, Pres.; Kathy Smith, V.Pres.; Faith Nizinski, Point Captain; Odessa Hamm, Sec.;bheila Nicholas, Treas.; Joanne Maykopet, All-sports man- ager. To start the year off with a bang Play Day was held here. The theme of our Play Day was a rodeo. In February we initiated new members in a ceremony at which our mothers were present and each new mem- ber was given her G.A.A. pin. The G.A.A. attended several Play Days. The G.A.A. is sending two girls to the Southern G.A.A. Camp at Little Grassy Lake in Carbon- dale, Illinois. These two girls are Marian Haddock and Cheryle Slaby. In G.A.A. the girls have a chance to earn let- ters and charms by points for participating, sports- manship and attendance. To climax the year the girls had a wiener roast at which all the new members were presented their initiation pins. The G.A.A. is spon- sored by the girls P.E. teacher, Mrs. Merkelbach, who through patient in- struction helps each girl. This organization was established to help the Phys- ical Education teacher during class and with the Girlsr Athletic Associ- ation. All of these girls have the responsibility of taking roll, checking the girlsr gym suits, their showers, the issuing of e- quipment, and in leading the girls in calisthenics. They are always ready to help any girl with a problem which may occur. Besides being of great help to our present teacher, Mrs. Merkelbach they help themselves by carrying out responsibilities and learn- ing a new experience that may be rewarding to them in the future. The student director directs the band on the field during football season and at pep assem- blies during basketball season. Under the fine and able direction of Mr. Ledbetter the band enjoyed a very successful year; a few of the high lights being a trip to Kinoshia, Wisconsin to visit the Leblanc wood- wind factory and a side trip to Chicago to visit the Museum of Science and Industry. The band also participated in several local parades. 2 ra,n PAUL CZE RVINSKE retteS LEFT TO RIGHT: Paulette Voloski Peggy Mayes Connis Sorenson Judy Purdes Mary Lee Svezia Ban A erS The band officers act as pivot points in many of the activities of the band. At the half-time of the home football games they help the band in the form- ing of various figures on the field. Since they do not have a regular band period to practice in, these girls must devote their own time for that purpose. They are to be commended as much for their selflessness as for the high caliber of the performances which they have displayed. We are very proud ofourcolor guard, which is an asset to the high school as well as to the band. The Advanced Choir has been very active this year. In October and May they went to Southern Illinois University, in Carbondale to take part in the annual choir clinic. This year they also sang for the Salvation Army in Granite City. The choir sang at almost all of the schools special events, and added special enjoyment to all of these. Each day the choir will rehearse songs, learn and practice fundamentals of music and learn more music appreciation. Ia cli3 on JJia I S) c lx o o ( sdclva n cecl Cdhoi Much of the success of this year's Choir has been due to our new Choral Instructor, Mrs. Valerie Stevens, and the Choir Officers, who are Cheryle Dion, President; Carol Rudnicki, Vice-President; Stephenine Stawar, Librarian; Donna Achor, Secretary-Treasur- er; and Larry Woodard, Business Manager. a loir a d i Son J4uk S •9 i n n i n v Choi 52 Although it is not often in the spotlight, the Beginning Choir does its share of work. Its purpose is to teach the students music theory and gradually introduce them to more advanced pieces of music. It is the training they get here that molds them into a finer group as they proceed to more advanced choral works. This year we had a fine group and are looking forward to the work they will do next year. English III Here is where we find the makings of the future Senior class. Now no longer do you concentrate on the dangling participles and commas, but on reading and American literature. You are prepared for the fleet- footed Senior year in school and armed with reading, speech and self-expression. Chemistry I The knowledge imparted in this class answers many questions and, as it should produces many more. Most of the work done in this class is limited to the textbook with a small amount of lab work under the watch- ful and concerned eyes of many of the little caged rodents in the ventilation hood. Metal Shop One look at the eager faces of these stu- dents and you can see that they are enjoying themselves as well as learning an important skill. Working with machinery is no game, however; caution is the watchword. Typing I Patience and practice are the keys to becoming a proficient typist as is evidenced by this picture. Although the perfection of this skill is largely an individual effort, a word of advice from the instructor is always appreciated. Advanced Algebra Some of our illustrious mathematicians in the making, nurtured by Mr. Barr. The year is always filled with much study, numer- ous amounts of figuring, heavy discussion and vigorous testing. This class will long be re- membered of their aid in obtaining red pencils of the type sought for by their teacher. Office Practice One of the classes most quickly utilized by our graduates in their adult endeavors. Many of the girls who take this course are employed by industry as secretaries of office workers. They learn difficult office procedures such as eating without getting crumbs on the typewriter and how to make mistakes in triplicate with the use of carbon paper. College Prep, English Of Human Bondage, is not only the title of a book but also the password pertain- ing to the work. Yet this is not at all apparent in the free and easy way this class is con- ducted. You not only study literature but also have informal study in psychology, sociology, and being an individual who can express him- self which is essential to all college bound students. Physiology What shape! What form! Many times what embarrassment to the girls.’ Here’s where you learn about all the bones in the song and have no time to make any bones about it. Here also, do you find the future zoologist, biologist, nurses and doctors!?! When you finish recalling the vivid memories brought back to you by your annual, do not forget to give a close look to the adver- tisers, who have helped to make this annual possible.
