Chosen at the be- ginning of the school year, they set out to better the school in some way and to improve conditions that are unsuitable for best results. A great as- set to our school, this body is responsible for the fine rules and laws under which we are governed. Those who were elected as officers for the Student Council for '60-'61 are: Shirley Barton, President; Cecelia Markuly, Vice-Presi- dent; Phyllis Lapinski,Secre- tary; and Edward Walker, Treasurer. St u clen r _ o unci i ion a tM. on or Composed of students maintaining a B average or higher, this organization was established to create a greater desire to learn, and it has succeeded in bringing about more enthusiasm for scholas- tic achievement. Members oi the society with their service, leadership, and high standards are honored and highly re- cognized by the high school. The Honor Society mem- bers were the guest of the Madison Rotary Club which sponsored a banquet to re- cognize their scholastic a- chievement. This organization is a val- uable asset not only to the school but also to the com- munity and success in the future. 42 Here they are, the seniors who made our 1961 Madisonian a reality! From composing and typing the printed copy to selecting, arranging, and pasting in photos they have spent many long and tedious hours compiling the annual you now hold. Chosen near the beginning of the year for their respective sections, they re- present as nearly as possible a cross-section of every phase of student life at Madison High School. Such a group is not only desirable but necessary for a complete and accurate annual. Special mention must be given to our Advertising and Business Sections for mak- ing possible many of the in- novations of the 1961 Madison- ian; such as, the colored scen- ery end sheets. Our thanks to the yearbook sponsors, who were always ready with a helpful word of advice. WaJi Soman DL D, rojan Four typewriters, one printing press, a dozen sten- cils, one stapler, and four reams of paper, all musts for an edition of the Trojan Flashes. But wait—the most important ingredient of all has been omitted. Add one Trojan Staff and work until exhausted. When the press rolls on the evening before the paper goes on sale, the staff works until every copy is stapled together before going home. Five six- weeks editions were turned out, and the last week of school a special senior edition was sold. The Trojan Staff had a year filled with activity and enjoyment that will long be remembered. The Future Nurses of America Club is an organi- zation composed of girls plan- ning to enter the field of nursing after graduating from high school. It is oUr newest club and has had a very active year. A trip to the Deaconess Hospital was one of the high- lights of the club's activities. At various times in the year a representative from Bellville Junior College and a repre- sentative from the State Public Health Nursing came to the high school to discuss the various aspects of nursing. Since its influence extends far beyond high school, the Future Nurses of America Club is one of our most valuable or- ganizations. The officers for the year were: Jeanette Dollins, Presi- dent; Dorothea Pryor, Vice- President; Donna Dowthitt, Secretary; and Betty Champion, Treasurer. ure n u rSeS Of J m erica The Madison Library Club is composed of freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior students who, because of their scholastic standing, are able to contribute time toward giving their fellow students competent library service. For this service the members receive pins during their senior year. The award desig- nates the number of years of service and any office which the member held during his high school attendance. Ten students of this year's club received pins, four of which were four year pins. By help- ing each student to secure that which will best aid him in getting his assigned lessons, the Library Club becomes an invaluable asset to the school. 44 This fine group, selected at the beginning of the school year, serves as the background for our great Talent Show under the direction of Mr. Edwin Barton. Rounding up talent was first on their agenda, and then came the job of producing the show. Staging, advertising, financing, and promotion were carried out efficiently and orderly to make the show a smashing success, as usual. Our thanks to the committee and cast for adding this show to our list of hits and for helping make this yearbook possible by turning the pro- ceeds over to the yearbook. The members of the Talent Show Committee were: Dorothy Macios, Sharon Nicholas, Sheila Nicholas. Dorothy Martin, Frank Kitchen, Tina Signaigo, Chuck Snowden, and Paul Czervinski. Sa lent Show C ommitt ee Among the newest of our organizations is The French Club, under the fine super- vision of Mademoiselle Bethel. Providing enjoyment for its members and also striving to bring about a better under- standing of the French lan- guage, the club's ideals are centered around these aims; during the meetings French records are played to acquaint the students with the true French sounds, and French newspapers are read and translated. The election of officers, then initiation of new members, started off the year. Through the months, a bake sale and Christmas party were important highlights. The fine members of this organization play a very worthwhile part in Madison High School's ac- tivity program. junior IZJ C rods Imitating the National Red Cross, our Junior Red Cross contributes financial support, and service. During the first part of the school year there was a membership drive, and later a distribution of National Red Cross pins, folders, and envelopes was made. Gifts for needy children at Christmas and gifts and cheer for patients at hospitals formed other pro- jects in which the members took part. Through its asso- ciation with the National Red Cross, the Junior Red Cross can help extend aid to any part of our country that may need it. Proper attitudes and ideals on the part of the mem- bers are developed toward service for those who must meet unavoidable difficulties. As a character building or- ganization, the Junior Red Cross is invaluable to our high school. Jrom em a OfJl m erica The Future Homemakers of America is an organization working together for better and happier home life for everyone. We think that help- ing to make happy homes, now' and in the future, is the most important thing that you can do for democracy. President—Betty Walker; Vice-President —Joyce Teetor; Secretary—Annie Mitchell; Treasurer—E 11 a Patton; Project Chairmen— Marva Dozier, Gloria Bruce; Finance Chairmen—Bonnie Milan, Willie Mae Parker; Parliamentarian — Elaine Russell; Historian - B a r b a r a Kondrich; Music — Evelyn Mosley; Recreation — Rosemary Carson, Carol Hewlett; Public Relations - Geraldine Granville, Mary Hamm. 46 The G.A.A. is an organi- zation established to promote good sportsmanship among girls and to further their in- terest in athletics. It also teaches them the basic funda- mentals needed to enjoy these sports. The officers for the year '60-'61 were: B. Champion, Pres.; J. Dollins, V. Pres.: M. Staikoff, Point Captain; R. Carson, Sec.; J. Williams. Treas.; and K. Schenhoffer, All-sports manager. The beginning of the year was started off with a wiener roast to welcome new mem- bers. In February we initiated new members in a ceremony at which our mothers were present and each new mem- ber was given her G.A.A. pin. Playdays attended by the G.A.A. were held at Dupo in the fall and at Collinsville in the spring. Our G.A.A. Presi- dent, Betty Champion, and Vice-President Jeanette Dollins, were sent to the Southern G.A.A. Camp at Little Grassy Lake in Carbondale, Illinois. Seniors receiving State A- wards were Betty Champion, Mary Ann Staikoff, Rosemary Carson, and Judy Daley. Cjirfs hfetic 5 Satiation This organization was es- tablished to help the Physical Education teacher during class and with the Girls' Athletic Association. All of these girls are Seniors, who have the responsibility of taking roll, checking the girls' gym suits, their showers, the issuing of equipment, and in leading the girls in calisthenics. They are always ready to help any girl with a problem which may occur. Besides being of great help to our present teacher, Mrs. Merkelbachthey help themselves by carrying out responsibilities and learn- ing a new experience that may be rewarding to them in the future. One of the most popular organizations at Madison High is the Pep Club. It is one of the largest and loudest clubs at M.H.S. We're sure the foot- ball and basketball teams are glad of its strong support. The members are to be com- mended for their fine sense of sportsmanship and co- operation which thcyhavedis- played. The officers elected for the '60-'61 term were: Sylvia Evangeloff, President: Mary Ann Staikoff, Vice-President; Altheda English, Secretary: and Judy Daley, Treasurer. Besides the fine support the Pep Club displayed for the team, they were active in many other ways. Two sock hops were given at the end of the football and basketball season. Later on pins were also sold by the members. The Pep Club filled a season with a lot of activity and has really proved its worth. i i The M club is com- posed of all athletes who have lettered during the year in the various sports. These boys have worked hard and excelled in either football, track, cross-country, basketball, or baseball, or as in some cases, two different sports. The teams also could not have succeeded without the hard work put in by the coach- ing staff and the fine job done by the managers. We will have 17 returning lettermen next year and are looking forward to a fine season again next year. Many of the boys were honored at a banquet presented by the Madison Ro- tary Club in appreciation for their representing the city of Madison in the field of Sports. 48 From Left to Right the Senior Varsity Cheerleaders are: Annie Mitchell Sharon Nicholas, Sheila Nicholas, Jackie Shaver, Dorothy Macios, e • —senior Ck eerfeacL erd The Varsity and Junior Var- sity Cheerleaders are: BACK ROW: Senior Varsity Cheer- leaders. At the half-time of the home football games they help the band in the forming of various figures on the field. Since they do not have a regular band period to practice in, these girls must devote their own spare time for that purpose. They are to be commended as much for their selflessness as for the high caliber of the per- formances which they have displayed. We are very proud of our color guard, which is an asset to the high school as well as to the band. The student director directs the band on the field during football season and at pep assemblies during basket- ball season. Under the fine and able direction of Mr. Ledbetter the band enjoyed a very success- ful year; a few of the high- lights being a trip to Champaign, Illinois, to attend a concert pre- sented by the famed University of Illinois Concert Band, and participating in Southern Illinois U niversity's Homecoming Parade. «Student r 2 irector treetoi The band officers act as pivot points in many of the activities of the band. By working closely with Mr. Ledbetter and a wonder- fully cooperative band member- ship a very rewarding year was achieved. From Left to Right the of- ficers are: Mike Graves, Treas- urer; Andrew Purdes, President: Jeanette Dollins, Secretary; and Fred Becker, Vice-President. 54 The Advanced Choir has been very active this year. Two concerts were given: a Christmas program and a spring musical. Besides these two programs the group took a trip to the Southern Illinois University Campus for a musi- cal festival early in the fall. The Choir also sponsored a picnic for its members and their guests at Forest Park. Besides the enjoyment which Choir has to offer, it also provides a better appreciation of music for our students. w cl is on JJi9 h Sck oo -Advanced C lioii Much of the success of this year's Choir has been due to Choral Instructor, Mrs. Salerno, and the Choir Of- ficers, who are from left to right: Judy Daley, Vice-Presi- dent; Frank Kitchen, Business Manager; Mary Ann Staikoff, President; Altheda English, Secretary-Treasurer; and Cheryle Dion, Librarian. Choir Off: cers Although it is not often in the spotlight, the Beginning Choir does its share of work. Its purpose is to teach the students music theory and gradually introduce them to more advanced pieces of music. It is the training they get here that molds them into a finer group as they proceed to more advanced choral works. This year we had a fine group and are looking forward to the work ihcy will do next year. You can easily tell that someone is about to say, . . .1 don’t know, by the gleeful ex- pression on the chairman's face. This class offers fine opportunities for real self expression with enjoyment being part of the reward of the learning process. MECHANICAL DRAWING II Here we see a group of students drawing mazes of lines on special sheets of paper. You guessed it, this is a class in mechanical drawing. The watchword of this class is neatness, and the completed assignments show that many fine drafts- men will be graduating in the future. AMERICAN HISTORY It is readily discernable by the eager ex- pressions on the faces of these students that the dismissal bell is about to ring. We do not mean to imply, however, that the students weren't just as eager when they entered the classroom. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Mass confusion and loads of fun are typical of any P.E. basketball game. It is noteworthy that half of the students pictured here are not actually in the game; they merely wanted to get their picture taken. 56 CHEMISTRY II Double! Double! Toil and trouble! Fire burn and cauldron bubble! No, this is not a scene from Macbeth; it merely shows a few of our countries future scientists'. We make this prediction on the assumption that their lab procedure will allow them to remain standing long enough for them to complete the course. FRENCH II Here we see the antics of a few French students as they practice a French play. By means such as these the class not only acquires knowledge of the subject, but has a great deal of pleasure as well. TYPING 1 HOME ECONOMICS Patience and practice are the ’'keys to be- coming a proficient typist as is evidenced by this picture. Although the perfecting of this skill is largely an individual effort, a word of advice from the instructor is always appreciated. The satisfaction of having really accomplished something is the best part of this class. This picture merely shows the beginning of a half-hour of anxiety. What will they have when the oven is opened? METAL SHOP One look at the eager faces of these students and you can see that they are enjoying themselves as well as learning an important skill. Working with machinery is no game, however: caution is the watchword. BOTTOM ROW: Left to Right, Mgr. J. Hanson, T. Andrews, W. Woolfolk, M. Graville, N. Pavlow, S. Barton, E. Walker, M. Harris, N. Displays Great Form To the Student............ When you finish recalling the vivid memories brought back to you by your annual, do not forget to give a close look to the advertisers, who have helped to make this annual possible. Show your appreciation to them by pa- tronizing their business establishments often, for they deserve to receive our business just as we have received theirs. My final appeal to the students is this: SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS. You will find that your dollar will buy just as much from them as from anyone else.
