For we seniors it was a year of hard work, good times, and farewell. For the undergraduates it was also a year of hard work and good times, moreover it was a year of growth—mentally, physically, and spiritually. We have found one lesson to be very true to life and hope you will accept this small piece of advice. In the immortal wrords of that great English poet, Alfred Lord Tennyson, from his masterpiece, Ulysses,” To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. Co-Editors Sharon Sorenson and Paul Brawley Executive Board FIRST ROW: Nancy Salmon, Business Manager; Paul Brawley and Sharon Sorenson, Co-Editors. SECOND ROW: Leonard Gnojewski, Advertising Chairman; Frank Hideg, Sports Chairman; Eddie Robbins, Activities and Organizations Chairman; Nancy Murphy, Senior Chairman. A dministration CHESTER L. McMANAWAY HENRY M. BAUCUM VASIL C. GRAVILLE WENSEL L. BROWN Superintendent JOHN N. BELLCOFF President DR. STEVE K. GEROFF-Secretary OEL M. BLUMENSTOCK AUSTIN LEWIS-School Attorney 4 My message to all of you is an old one. It starts out with a few quotations. ’’Anything good will not come easy. Anything that is worth having will be worth working for. There is no short cut to success: The easiest and best way is a long hard road of work and more work. Docs this sound difficult and unattractive? Thru education you should be preparing yourself now for a job that will be very enjoyable and make work feel more like play. On this road to success you will meet many obstacles and your ability to by-pass or overcome them will depend upon your past learned experiences. Our experiences are shaped by our Intelligence, our own good Common Sense and our Tolerances. Tolerance, moral, physical and human (self and others) is all im- portant in every action and move that we make. Our own position should be rela- tive and thought of in respect to how it affects others. Success then may be thought of as our strength and desire to achieve in an environment based upon our reaction with others. To Quit is to fail. To continuously try to the best of your ability is to Pass and Succeed. JOHN L. PALCHEFF, Principal Bachelor of Science - Washington University Master of Science - Washington University ADAM A. In witness whereof. We, the Class of I960, the testators, have to this, our Will, set our hands and seal this twentieth day of May, one thousand nine hundred and sixty. (Signed) Witness Ed Valker( (Signed) ____________clcluAs Witness Mildred Dacus 29 CEMENT Senior Class Prophecy The time is twenty years hence this day of May 20, 1960, and fate has dealt favorably with the class of ”60.” The wealthy philanthropist, Dennis Ashford, source of wealth unknown and Loretta Varner, who has been very prosperous in the Mascara Company, have generously offered the use of their ocean liner for a class reunion. The reunion will consist of a three month ocean voyage around the world. All invitations have been sent by secretary, Shirley Adams, and finally the anxiously awaited day has arrived. The first dowrn the gang plank is none other than Judith Wisnick, gossip columnist for the New York Times. She is greeted by Captain Robert Kurilla, his first mate, Gerald Cholevik and his second mate, James Grimes. Not far behind is the Honorable Judge Frank Hideg, public defender, Robert Hamilton, and the World’s Greatest Criminal Lawyer, James Harshany. They are followed down the gang plank by the warden, James Verba and a few charter members — Paulette Taylor, Sandra Wojcik, Sharon Sorenson, Kay Ditch, and Kathleen Dezan — of his fabulous, well known resort ’’The Peanut Farm. It is now a few hours later and a majority of the class of 60 are aboard the vessel. We now find the ship social director, Carolyn Johnson, with her hands full. She has just entered the gym, where an ardent discussion is taking place. The topic of discussion is: Which sport is the most important element of physical fitness. Skin diver Earle Ferguson is positive skin diving will develop quicker reflexes than any other sport; but World’s Champion Wrestler, Fred Bright, judo instructor, Donna Adams, and mountain climber, Betty DeBow do not agree. Weight lifter, John Hutchings be- lieves quick reflexes are important but not as important as the strength he has gained through weight lifting. Minister, Steve Rydgig, fearing this discussion has gone far enough, reminds the group that fighting solves no problems. Exhausted by this lengthy sermon, he retires to the cocktail lounge, where he meets his old friend, Terry Dutko, who is now a professor of mathematics. Yes, although our school days are over, several have chosen education for their vocation. Phyllis Ratliff, a history major; Linda Browning, a physical education major; Lynda Douglas, a math major, and Principal JoAnn Buchek have returned to Madison Senior High to take the place of their past instructors. Others such as school cook, Nancy Murphy, and school bus driver Venita Bartley, have also found a favorable position within the school. Besides our gossip columnist, we have two other representatives of the press aboard. They are Charles BB Thomas, who writes the lovelorn column, and photographer Eddie Robbins. To be sure, Playboy Paul Dunn needs a little advice from BB, as he is engaged to three girls closely related, Barbara Zimmerman, Jean Zimmerman, and Joan Zimmerman, but John Venarsky sees no problem, he and his five wives Sherrill Joplin, Linda Miller, Jeanette White, Mary Ann Reed and Sharon Sharpe are very happy. The ship should not want for entertainment as there is a great variety of acts aboard. W'e have been graced with the presence of Leonard Gnojewski, who now plays the role of Chester in Gunsmoke; singer, Connie Majkut and Delores Thomas, the famous Salvation Army pianist. For those of Latin American tastes we have Can Can Dancers Janice Bell, Oralean Forrest, Barbara Smith and Lillian Winkfield. For the intellectuals a dance by the famous ballet dancer, Veronica Morgan, a lecture on the art of dance by dance instructor, Larry Ashley or ping-pongology by James Moss would be more interesting. 32 For those who are still young at heart, the circus holds many pleasures. On deck C we have a group from a World famous circus now owned by Jo Ann Nowicki. There are such daring acts as Maureen Bevill, the only woman alive that can dive from a thousand feet into a pan of water; acrobat, Marilyn Rogers; Margaret Whitt, the human cannonball; Willard Valentine, tight rope walker; lion tamer, Eldon Jackson, and bareback rider, Rosalie Jasudowicz. The younger generation would enjoy different types of performances, such as Anita Garcia’s trained whale or Mary Lou Vandermark’s expert hopping rabbits. No circus is complete without a clown and he is none other than Robert Ely. As the passengers that have arrived are talking over old times, Disk Jockey, Richard Bargiel announces that Sandra McDaid challenges anyone at a game of pick-up sticks, at which she is cham- pion. Janet Wldner, hat-check girl, decides to accept her challenge. To add interest to this champion- ship game, tax collector, Valerie George; a minister's wife, Lorene Brow'n; and Rosemary Wright, inventor of a bug spray just to keep the bees away, agree to act as cheerleaders for the huge crowd that has gathered on top deck. Due to the danger of the sport there has been a round table discussion and it has been decided that all problems can be solved. Doctor Dennis Gordon and nurse Donna McCormick will take care of injuries; Dentist, Jacob Young will replace any lost teeth; pharmacist, Keith Turner, will fill any prescription and if worst comes to worst, Mortician Jerry Blue can always step in. But there are those who have other interests such as the Manufacturer of the World's best Flea Powder, Clark Main, and dog catcher, Paul Brawley, who both agree without the very common canine, the dog, their life would be very boring. The gambling casino on Deck B, run by Sheila Obermeier and Anita Brown, holds the interest of such people as Margaret Arnhart’s group from the hills of the Ozarks--Gene Lionberger, Dona Loman, and Nancy Salmon. Very little interests psychologist, Ulysses Foster, except a few of his most faithful patients — Jimmie Lou Cooley, Willie Walker, Betty Collins, and Helen Cooper. Manicurist, L rleane Payne, taxi cab driver, Rose Marie Antonovich and policewoman Betty Ann Russell talk over the latest gossip in the salon of the World famous hair stylists Elaine Tanase and Judy Severlne. While at the same time in the barber shop of Gary Welborn and Victor Valentine, Private Herb McClure (of the army) and automobile insurance salesman, David Gipson pass a little of their own gossip. In the coffee shoppe, Representative Karen Humphrey and Carolyn Payne, along with Senators Darlene Robinson and Arlene Schiller discuss the world problems, with the first woman president, Jean Weidner. Sam Georgeff, president of a toy manufacturing company, and Patricia Star head of the outer space candy factory The Milky Way discuss the latest crime wave with Yvonne Yovandic, finger- print expert. The last to arrive is Jerry Williams, lifeguard and cross planet runner, Jeremiah McClellan. Now as all have arrived the ship sails out across the horizon, beginning the three month reunion of the fabulous class of 60. 33 CUTIE Senior Skip Day LOOK MA, NO WATER WINGS WHAT A GASERM BOY AM I THIRSTY!! This group is selected early each year and serves as a pivot point for the entire production of the annual talent show. Mr. Barton called the first conference early in December whereat preliminary and routine matters were discus- sed and the committee became missionaries for new, fresh, live, talent. Several meetings were held in January and February to discuss more immediate problems, e.g. auditions, ad- vertising, finances, sets and scenery. However, it was not until early April,fol- lowing the auditions that a theme was decided upon: Night Club, New York,” a tour of three New York clubs, Latin Quarter,” ”Enbers,” Empire Room, and a beatnik dive, Big Daddy's. Eldon Jackson was cast as the man- about-town emcee and Pat Star and Valerie George were his two proteges. Settings were created by Frank Kitchen. The show netted a nice profit and all proceeds went to finance the 1960 Madisonian. 45 Library Club FIRST ROW: C. Johnson, M. Barrett, J. Weidner, K. Bogleff, Miss Follmer, K. King, A. Hodges, P. They ac- tually act as a regular librarian in the Madison Public Library, checking out books, filing the cards, and collecting fines. In their numerous meetings they help new members learn any new methods that might be popular and con- venient such as with filing. During the course of the year they had a picnic and a small Christmas party. F.H.A. At the first meeting of Lo Cercle Francais the officers were elected: Paul Brawley, Pres.: Margaret Arnhart, Vice- Prcs.; Elaine Shipcoff, Secretary, and Barbara Smith, Treasurer. Early in the fall les jeunes fillcs ct les garcons rented a motion picture travelogue on the resort areas of France, and held its first initiation of new members. One of the most necessary necessities of any club is money; so, in order to promote this idea, the club held a bake sale at Glik's Department Store. The next social event was the annual Christmas Party held in the French coffe shop of M.H.S. — the cafeteria — which was celebrated in the true French custom-ou-la- la. Shortly, a gigantic candy sale was being pushed — 288 cans of chocolate fluffs and al- monds were eagerly being sought by their fellow students. The highlight of the year was the party held in the Rathskeller of the Lennox Hotel honoring the 1960 Graduates. Later the same evening, the members attended a showing of the hit musicale, Can-Can. During the Red Cross drive in our school area, these girls prepared the pins, folders and envelopes. Also during Christmas season they donate gifts to various orphanages so that everyone gets something at Christmas time. For their main social event the Junior Red Cross gave a party in the cafeteria. The G.A.A. is an organization to promote good sportsmanship among girls and to give them an interest in athletics. It also teaches them the fundamentals of the games so they will enjoy them more. The officers for the year '59-'60 were: E. Tanase, Pres.: M. Vandermark, V. Pres.; B. Smith, Sec.: J. Dollins, Treas.: B. Champion and B. Collins, Co-Captains, and K. Bogleff, All-sports manager. The beginning of the year was started off with a weiner roast to welcome the new mem- bers. In February we initiated new members at a ceremony at which our mothers were pres- ent and each new member was given her G.A.A. pin. The social event of the year was a turn- about dance which was held in March. Playdays attended by the G.A.A. were held at East St. Louis in the fall and at O'Fallon in the spring. Our G.A.A. President, Elaine Tanase, and Vice-President, Mary Lou Vandermark, were sent to the Southern G.A.A. Camp at Little Grassy Lake inCarbondale, 111. Seniors receiving State Awards were Elaine Tanase, Mary Lou Vandermark, Jean Weidner, Janet Weldner, and Barbara Smith. Other Seniors receiving awards were Betty Collins--2nd year Local Award, and Jimmie Lou Cooley—1st year Local Award. Leader sh ip This organization is composed of the girls who help Mrs. Murkelbach during the Physical Education classes and with the Girls' Athletic Association. They are usually Seniors who have the responsibility of taking roll, checking the girls' gym suits, their showers, the issuing of equipment, and in leading the girls in calis- thenics. They are always ready to help any girl with a problem which she may incur. Besides being a great help to Mrs. Murkelbach, they help themselves by carrying out a responsibil- ity and learning a new experience that may be rewarding in the end — they become acquainted with all kinds of girls and maybe one day one of them will become a Physical Education teacher and teach here at M.H.S.!!! 48 FIRST ROW: E. Pep Club The Pep Club is one of the biggest and one of the most important organizations found in a high school, especially during the Football and Basketball season. Football season brought the election of the officers of the year '59-'60: C. Lewis, Pres- ident; M. Vandermark, V. Pres.; B. Smith, V.Pres.; J. Williams, Treasurer; and M. Staikoff, Secretary. During this season the Pep Club decorated the goal posts and sold hot chocolate and coffee during the games. During the Basketball season the Club sponsored a sock-hop, and after the season they gave a dance. The Pep Club is to be congratulated on the immense support they gave to the team and for their fine sense of sportsmanship and co-oper- ation which is important to the team and the school they represent. “M” Club FIRST ROW: F. This honorable organization represents the outstanding lettermen of Madison Senior High School. These boys have each played hard and well in the various athletics represented: track, basketball, football, and baseball. Be- sides being above average on the field or bas- ketball floor, they also are above average in their scholastic endeavors. This organization had no social activities since it is more of an honor to belong than a social club. Aft The Trojan The ’’Trojan Staff” publishes the tri- semester paper each year. This year the newspaper staff took over the entire pro- cesses which combine to make the fin- ished product: reporting, editing, typing of stencils, art work, compiling of honor roll, printing, sorting, stapling, and sales. Money collected from the sales of papers is to be used either next year or the fol- lowing year for establishment of a marble seal in the main hall floor of the school. Members of this year’s staff were selected on the basis of an essay concern- ing Russia's Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, Since the staff is a non-social, ’’all-work” organization, the reporters were awarded one and two year pins.
