Madison has lost one of its most devoted teachers with the passing of Miss Fern Reed, late teacher of Citizenship and World History. Dedicated to her profession, she believed firmly in scholarship. As proof of her loyalty to this high ideal, she devoted many years of conscientious service to a student body who recognized her intolerance of inferior work. But Miss Reed had another facet to her character— the personable one she exhibited outside the class- room. Here we observed an interesting conversationalist, one who loved to talk of the theatre and the musical world, for she was so well acquainted with the two fields. She was always quick to laugh at a joke and enjoyed the company of those interesting people who had been places, seen things and could add sparkle to the moments. When we heard the news of Miss Reed's death last September, it was difficult for us to realize that her life was over. Such courage and fierce determination to carry on despite her illness was an inspiration to all of us to valiantly accept whatever life gives us. The dimming sands of time have erased many in- cidents of the past, but somehow it can never erase Miss Reed's spirit. Yes, it was her spirit that we admired and that seems to be with us still! Administration SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS - WENSEL L. BROWN Board of Education Compliments of SUPREME RADIO APPLIANCES—705 Madison Avenue and 2109 Johnson Road GL 2-3146 GL 2-5315 4 To The Class Of 1958 My message to the Senior Class this year shall be a quotation made in a recent news story by Cary Grant. It is as follows: If a man picks up a little knowledge... .if he improves his tolerance... .if he reduces his own impatience and irritability... .if he can spare a listening ear to the other fellow.. . .well, he can't help but find himself easier to live with. In this statement you will find the most important essentials for an educated, under- standing man or woman. In this troubled world of today these few words may mean the difference between the survival of nations or the destruction of mankind. As the years pass by we know that we shall be grateful to the instructors at Madison High that have dedicated their lives to the education of children in our community. They have spent a great deal of time in helping each member of this class prepare a solid foundation and background for the many problems in life that must be overcome. As these problems arise and we take each one in stride it shall be comforting to us to remember our high school staff. It is our sincere wish that they are as proud of us as we are of them. The comical assortment of clothing worn was not only amusing to the seniors but, to the freshmen as well. It consisted of: Girls—feedbag skirt, men's bib overalls, man's hat and tennis shoes, and onion necktie; Boys—feedbag blouse, tattered skirt, woman's hat and handbag, and garlic earrings. With the excitement of initiation being over, we began to get down to serious work. Our first big task was to elect class officers. They were: President, Tom Layman; Vice- President, Anna Terrell; Secretary, Linda Taylor; and Treasurer, Linda Pate. Sophomore Year Well, we had come up in the world, we had become Lower-Upper classmen. Our first major objective was to elect class officers. They were: President, Dan Reilly; Vice-President, Linda Pate; Secretary, Vernon Wilson; and Treasurer, Ernestine Zimmerman. The Jr. Varsity cheerleaders chosen, were Judy Brown and Linda Taylor. The majorette chosen from our class was Ernestine Zimmerman. Junior Year The Junior year began much the same as our Sophomore year. The officers elected were: President, Dan Reilly; Vice President, Linda Taylor; Secretary, Linda Pate; and Treasurer, Vernon Wilson. The cheerleaders advanced to Varsity position, and we added another member to the majorettes, Connie Vivod. The most outstanding event of the Junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom, Dancing in the Dark. The year ended with the ordering of our class rings. Senior Year We are Seniors. Just the word makes us feel important. The officers elected for our big year are: President, Dan Reilly; Vice-President, Bill Kinder; Secretary, Jerry Price; Treasurer, Vernon Wilson. One of our main events this year, was the Talent Show, Talent of 58 , directed by Mr. Barton. Other important events were. Class Day, May 23; Baccalaureate, May 25; Skip Day, May 28, and the biggest event of all, Graduation, May 29. Although we have anticipated the time when we would no longer be a member of Madison High, we feel a great deal of regret at having to leave the school which we have been so much a part of for four years.
