2 WE DEDICATE THIS YEAR ROOK The Faculty Whose patience and understanding has made our four years at M. H. S. more enjoyable and whose guidance has enabled us to face the future with greater knowledge and confidence. Compliments Of FRIEDMAN’S 5th And Madison Ave. Madison, Illinois T.R. 6-6670 3 TO THE CLASS OF 1955 Today, more so than in the days of your parents and grandparents, you Seniors are concerned about the future and about your security. The price you want to pay for security is a matter of your own choice. It is well to remember the words of Theodore Roosevelt, that “what a man does for him- self dies with him; what he does for his community lives long after he has gone,” You have to live with people. Your future and your security depend upon how well you do this one thing. Your greatest asset and your greatest security are your education and good sense. This you have--it is something that money cannot buy. I cannot give you a guaranteed formula for success. I can only suggest that to be successful and to enjoy security requires competent work plus the ability to get along with people. You should always remember that the reward for a thing well done is to have done it. 4 SECRETARIES Patricia Blumenstock Edna Mae McLinn Compliments Of SECLACK FUNERAL HOME 1510 7th Street Madison, Illinois T.R. 6-1615 Wensel L. Madison, 111. Class History I Well, we are in high school at last and the first thing on most of our minds is Initiation Day! (The dread of all freshmen.) We are walking around shivering in our shoes because high school is a new experience. We have survived the ordeal of Initiation Day and are finally getting organized. We start first by electing officers: Steve Maragides, President; Ferrell Simpson, Vice-President; Mike Costoff, Secretary; and Dorothy Williams, Treasurer. It seems as if we have brought luck to M. H. S., for our football team has won it’s first game in six years and the basketball team has gone to State for the first time in our school history. The freshmen who lettered this year are Mike Costoff and Ed Duffin. We remember that day in April, 1951 when we, the first freshman class, came to the new high school. We had been waiting for this day for years and our whole community had worked to see our school finally completed. It was a happy day for all of us. II Now, at last we can say we are no longer freshmen, and even’though we are still underclass- men, we have broken away from that freshman stage and are more active in school functions. Class officers this year are: Peggy Pryor, President; Mike Costoff, Vice-President; Shirley Howard, Secretary; Ed Duffin, Treasurer. Cheerleaders chosen out of our sophomore class are: Pat Kutzera, Gert Smith, and Lorna Marshall. Lettermen are: Mike Costoff, Ed Duffin, Raleigh Freeman, and Clarence Jordan. Our class is greatly increased by the arrival of the Dunbar students whom we are glad to have. III At last we are juniors! We have reached the half-way mark and are at last part of the upper- classmen of M. H. S. The officers elected this year are: Bob Lux, President; Don Hamilton, Vice-President; Shirley Howard, Secretary; Steve Maragides, Treasurer. Our three cheerlead- ers, elected the preceeding year, were promoted to Varsity Team Cheerleaders, and are doing a splendid job cheering our team on to victory. The Lettermen from the junior class are: Mike Costoff, Ed Duffin, Raleigh Freeman, Clarence Jordan, Jim Childers, Don Hamilton, John Kraus, Stan Lucas, Bob Lux, Tyrone Echols, Dio Foster, Mike Foster, John Hampton, James Salmond, and Dave Tucker. We are proud to have Ed Duffin as a representative of our junior class, on the Cross Country Team that is going to State this year. Our big event this year is the Junior Senior Prom. As our theme we have chosen ‘'Hearts And Hats. For all of us on the Prom Committee it is hard work, but we are having fun because the outcome will be a tremendous success. The last thing we are doing as juniors is to order class rings in preparation for the follow- ing year. IV Yes, we are seniors at last, and off to a good start. We have received our class rings and elected officers which are: Bob Lux, President; Die Foster, Vice-President; Shirley Howard, Secretary; and Don Hamilton, Treasurer. Cheerleaders again are; Pat Kutzera, Gert Smith, and Lorna Marshall. The Trojan Lettermen are: Mike Costoff, Ed Duffin, John Kraus, Raleigh Freeman, Clarence Jordan, Jim Childers, Don Hamilton, Stan Lucas, Bob Lux, Tyrone Echols, Dio Foster, Mike Foster, John Hampton, Ray Arnold, Bob Jones, Tom Loftus, Rudy Papa, Dick Gregg, Charles Svoboda, Dave Tucker, Earl Hines, Everett Hockerson, Marvin Terrell, James Salmond. Madison, Illinois Compliments Of SAV MOR SUPER MARKET 1508 3rd St. Gl. 2-3143 We are proud to have our Trojan Teams represented by such fine boys, and also of our head majorette, Shirley Hughes. The big thing for all seniors is the yearbook, and to raise money so that we can have the best one yet, the yearbook staff is putting on a show called the Yearbook Revue. It included an accordian solo, a T. V. skit, “This Is Your Life,” The Infaturators, and The Cider Sippers. The big money-raising project for our yearbook is the High School Revue. Thanks to Mr. Barton! Miss Kenny is chaperoning the senior class on a trip to Carbondale and all who are going expect to have a good time, especially the boys who are to explore the girls dormitory. Dates in our history to remember are April 15, when we hold Senior Dress up Day; May 20, which is set aside for Class Day, the main event of that day being the presentation of awards and the reading of the will. Following that, one of the greatest days in history; May 2 6, which is Senior Skip Day, and we will make it a day to remember as we know we will never have another chance to do it again. And now that our Senior Year is over, there are many sad faces for there are many among us who wished we didn’t have to leave. There may be some of us who will never meet again after we have left M. H. S. but the pictures we exchanged will be there to remind us. Soon we will be out on our own and we want to thank Mr. Riddle and all our teachers for the help and guidance they have given us throughout our four years in preparation for our graduation on May 27, 1955. We hope this history is a warm and glowing memory of the best years of our lives and that you will always remember this, our Senior Class of 1955. GROCERY 12th And Grand Ave. T.R. 6-2662 29 Prophecy We have just reached the site of the great Arnold Circus, owned and operated by Ray Arnold, where the engineers, Don Hamilton, Charles Svoboda, and Tom Loftus, are busily erect- ing the large tents. We spoke with these old classmates and were told that many of them were starring in the circus. Upon learning this we decided to stay at Madison Square Garden and take in the acts. We were getting hungry and went across the street to Dunlap’s drug store where we met Earle Hines and Ken Dunlap, who were the pharmacists. We reminisced over the good old days for some time and then stopped by the old Alma Mater to see who was teaching there. First we stopped in the office to meet the principal who was Richard Gregg. We asked him why there were no children in the school, and he told us that he had created a National Skip Day for all the kids. We then talked to the secretaries who were Ruth Ann Golch and Verne Butler, who said that the students were getting harder to teach and therefore had to hire some of the best teachers in the world. We visited these unparalleled teachers and stopped first at the history room where Rudy Papa was busily grading test papers. Next we visited the bookkeeping room where Pat Doneff was lecturing her class. We talked for a while and then went to the biology and chemistry room formerly held down by C. O. Gass and E. Votoupal. We found, much to our surprise, Robert Armstrong mixing an atomic solution. Robert had just received the Nobel (no-bell) prize as the scientist of the year. George Staggs told us that Mr. Gass had re- signed because of the lack of rats in the high school. In the P. E. Department we found Mike Costoff eating out assistant coaches, Bob Jones, Bob Cantlon and John Kraus. The girls P. E. instructors, Pat Kutzera and Barb Kraley, were enjoying a rest after the kids had gone on their skip day. While we were talking Izola Barefield, the school nurse, dropped in to chat for a while. She told us about Hugo Carter’s son having his hand caught in the soda vender and spraining it a little. She said he was a chip off the old block. By this time it was getting late, and we decided to leave the old school and go to a restaur- ant to dine. As we left the school, we met millionaire, professional basketball player, Jim Orescovich with his wife, Carol Turner, and their four children, one of whom now starred on the school team. We learned that they were going to go to the circus that night, so we planned to meet them there and watch the acts together. We crossed the street to the Old High Grill, now owned by Jane Schoolfield and her husband Boyd Briles. We talked, over sloppy joes and pepsies, until we were thoroughly lubricated. As we left they said they would join us at the Circus that night. When we got back to our hotel we found that we had left some of our luggage at the Echols Airline Company. We told our old friend Tyrone, now known as Tycoon Ty, about our luggage, and he promptly spoke to another of our old classmates, Kathryn Hawley, who was the head com- munications operator of the airlines. She sent for a hostess to bring our bags. The hostess, much to our surprise, was Myrna Horn, who told us that she had not seen our luggage but would help us find it. As we toured the hangers, we came upon a supersonic craft which Myrna Horn, told us was to be test flown by Raleigh Freeman, their test pilot. Standing beside it was James Boyd, drawing a sketch of the plane for Diders Rejest. With him was his chief assistant, Everett Hockerson, who was to paint the drawing. As we were leaving, we saw the Globe Trotters getting off a plane, led by their coach. James Salmond, and assistant, Walter Jackson. We talked to them and found that many of the basketball stars of high school days were now with the Globe Trotters. They told us about Mike Foster setting a new scoring record, how Dio Fosters’ cool, calm, and collected play had won many games, how John Hampton dazzled the crowd with his jumping ability, and that Edward Shackelford had taken over in place of Goose Tatum, who was 98 years old at the time. 30 Madison, Illinois Compliments Of UHERCIK’S GROCERY 2000 Edwardsville Rd. T.R. 6-9596 When we reached the gate, Lorna Marshall, another hostess, had found our bags, and after a few friendly words we left for the Capitol Building, which had been moved from Washing- ton D. C. to Madison for protection by the political rackateers, We reached the capitol building just as President Robert Lux was finishing his inaugural address for his fourth term as Presi- dent of the United States. After he had finished his speech. We talked with him about politics and the old days at school. He invited us to go to the F. B. I. Building where he had to speak with Pat Noud, the head of the F. B. I., about getting more protection. While Robert and Pat were in a conference, we strolled about the building, and as we were passing the room where official files were kept, we saw Shirley Howard who was Pat’s private secretary. She told us that many of our classmates worked there. Charlotte McCaskill was a file clerk, Earle McCaskill was one of their best typists, and Vivian Walker who was a secretary in the Homicide section of the building, which was under the head of Mortician, Bob Noud. After bidding farewell to all our old classmates, we left the Capitol Building and headed for the circus which was starting. We bought our tickets at the gate from David Tucker, a one- time successful farmer, but who had gone broke when his cows ran away. As we got to our seats, Clarence Jordan began to sing our National Anthem. When he finished, Lois Rickert, a fearless lion tamer and retired nurse, displayed her ability to handle wild beasts. Next came a troup of dancers composed of Shirley Hughes, a star performer, Gertie Smith, and Rose Marie Greer, who were retired dance instructors, and Jim Childers, Shirley’s Manager. As we looked over the crowd, we saw Bertha and Shirley Vaughan, both high ranking offi- cers in the Salvation Army, seated below us. Then we noticed that the high wire was being put in place and that there was not a net below. Big Rab told us that Don Strauther, a retired Boy Scout General, and Marvin Terrell, coach of the Los Angeles Rams, worked without a net below them. As we noticed the length of the drop, we saw a group of nurses standing under the wire. They were Lorice Williams, Alice Smith, Wanda Schewe, and Helen Ferguson, all from the Madison Mercy Hospital. The two aerial stars performed without mishap, although at times we were a bit afraid that they would fall. After that act we again looked to see if we could locate any of our old friends. We saw Alversia Nelson, owner of the Nelson Gown Co., which produces the latest fashions in gowns, seated with some of the performers. And Steve Dudak, Millionaire Playboy, who was in a section filled with beautiful women. We also saw Lawrence Riley, sworn bachelor, sitting with Claudia Shackelford. A little to our right, we noticed Admiral Steve Maragides seat- ed with Ray Lewis, head Machinist of the Navy. As we watched the last acts, Peggy Rich, Ray Arnold’s private secretary, told us to drop in and see the circus again. We thanked her for the invitation. When we left the big top, Shirley Bucher, the famed opera singer, was singing our old school song, which was now number one on the Hit Parade. As we started to the parking lot we noticed three tractors parked alongside some cadillacs and limousines. The owners of these tractors, Ed Duffin, Stan Lucas, and Chester Swiecicki, told us they were going to have a drag for beers in a short time. When we told them that we were going to the airport, they offered to give us a ride which we accepted--and I do mean a ride! Although we were glad to leave the hard seats of the tractors, we hated to leave the wonder- ful city of Madison and all the wonderful people who live in it.
