If 2, X, s.........-..........-. ... . ....,.-....... History of Madison School The Madison High School building was finished in the fall of the year 1925. Most of the building was com- pleted during the time that William Rousch was trustee. The finishing of the building and the equipping was done by Samuel Kuder, the next trustee. Our school building is a modern structure of nine- teen rooms. A continuous commission was given to the school on the basis of a 6-6 plan. That is, the first six grades are down stairs, and the seventh and eighth grades and the four year high school are upstairs. with this system of teaching it is possible to HHV6 an exper- ienced teacher for each subyect group in the upper six grades. Each teacher is able to devote more time to the separate classes in the field in which he is specialized. ' The present faculty is composed of seven teachers in the Senior and Junior A. S. and three teachers in the lower six grades. Madison nigh School has become well Known in de- bating, oratorical contests, athletics, and many other lines. Our debating teams have proved the equal of others in this territory. Our oratorical representatives have won many laurels for the school. In athletics we are always equal and some times better than our neighbor- ing schools. We have been COUNTY CHAMPIONS in basketball six times and one time in baseball since the school start ed twelve years ago. A commercial course was added to this school in the year 1927. Since that time many students have taken ad- vantage of this course. The present enrollment of the upper six grades is 154. 89 of these students are in the four year high school, while 45 students are in the seventh and eighth, grades. The enrollment in the lower six grades is 121 ' students. x X -.f ,MQTX X in ,.Mlb f-,H ., i.,f WM . ,W x ff N.....Lj.....j 'x,,...:.i-..---! The squad was Greatly handicapped by the ji graduation of seven men, including the oattery, R. Smith and .Q Mcfafland. The outfield also had to he worked over. Petro Q? was the only infield man who remained in the same position XZ he regularly played last year. D. Lee, who played first base, went to the catcher's positiong and G. Smith pitched. ,fw a , The first game was played with the Gov. I. P. Gray nine. gl M. Miller pitched the entire game for the Red Birds and ff, struck out nine Tomcats. G. Smith, who pitched the first lj: four inninds for Madison, allowed three hits and struck out lr three Red Birds. E. Lee relieved Smith and pitched the re- l mainder of the game. me allowed five nits and fanned one ' Gray batter.. The Tomcats gleaned three hits off Miller and XX, had six errors charged against them. DeBoy made two hits 5 H and scored two runs for the Red Birds. The score was 8-O. if It was played at Madison on Septemoer 14, and was the second ,I game of the season for the Gray nine. This fact may somewhat PQ account for their superiority. - fy On September 21 the Tomcats went to Poling and again Nj? were unlucky. They were beaten by a score of 5-O. The , Yellow Jackets made four nits off Smith, who pitched two and Q two-thirds innings, and they collected five nits off E. Lee, gy who pitched the remainder of the game. The Tomcats made'five XE hits off Pitaer, who went all the way for Poling. Branson xf nit two triples for Poling, Juday hit one for Polin6, and E. QL Lee nit one for madison. This was a decided improvement over -Q the Gray game, althoigh the lomcats were far irom top form. Nj Pitzer struck out eleven Tomoats, while Smith struck out two 3 Yellow Jacxet batsmen. 'Kg The next and final game of the season was played at f qi Bryant. The score was ll-6 in favor of the Owls. Madison Q2 outhit dryant seven to six, out had ten errors chalhed up 5 adainst them. E. Lee, who pitched two and one-third innings, 3 allowed four hits and seven runs. Smith then went to the XJQ mound for the Tomcats, striaing out five Owl batsmen and i ,fX r allowing two nits and four runs. Ford, who went all the way fwl lx i for Bryant, struck out five Tomcat hitters. D. Lee hit a IN home run for madison as did adams for dryant. This game , was played on September 28.
