Chairman German French German Spanish Spanish Adel-Ki Advisor Counseling Russian Gffer Laboratory Work The foreign language department had 870 students enrolled this year in five different for- eign languages: French, German, Spanish, Latin, and Russian. French and Spanish were tied in popularity. A new teaching system, the Holt Method, was started this year in French, German, and Spanish classes. It consists of flashcards, take- home tapes, and records. A thirty-six-position language lab with over-head earphones was in- stalled. This way the student took dictation at his or her own rate, whereas, before, the teacher would dictate at one speed and some students were soon lost. As well as learning how to read and speak the language, students learned about the culture of the people of the various countries. They also learned songs to help with pronunciation. Since there were not enough students to have a fifth year Spanish class, some of the fifth year students helped teach other classes. This year Mr. Osaki taught a new approach to biology. His course, cellular biology, centered around the study of cells, and their functions. Mr. Blair and Mr. Dexter plan on doing team teaching in their general science classes next year. The department has several plans for room revisions which would allow for better usage of space. Plans are also being revised for a science research center which would permit changes in curriculum. They include an animal room, a green house, and areas for biological, chemical, and physical research. The department hopes to implement these plans in due time and be able to offer the best possible course for our students.

Business And Physical Education Since Madison opened eight years ago, there has been a complete turnover of both boys' and girls' P.E. teachers, as well as a change in the outlook toward physical fitness in our country. John F. Kennedy initiated this change by em- phasizing the importance of physical fitness. The Madison department has provided a happy me- dium between calisthenics, which is the more formal method of exercise, and group play by creating both the atmosphere for personal de- velopment and the opportunity for group sports. Health is required during one semester of the sophomore year for both girls and boys. This course offers instructions in drivers' training, personal grooming, and the effects of using alco- hol, drugs and tobaccog it also provides an intro- duction to anatomy and physiology.
