.ff ,iff-f '17 Challenges Minds Mathematics students chose their courses ac- cording to their future plans and needs, selecting either the general mathematics or college pre- paratory classes. Consumer math, an example of the general mathematics curriculum,Was of im- mediate practical value to all who took it. During the year consumer math classes learned how to compute the income tax for a given salary and students made a trip to a gro- cery store to see first-hand the values of buying large sizes of products and sale items. Repre- sentatives from the Copeland Lumber Company and Portland Federal Savings spoke to the classes on consumer needs and money manage- ment. Miss Whitcomb's advanced senior mathe- matics class made three different kinds of com- puters during the year. The purpose of this project was to familiarize the students with the mathematics of computers. After a study of pro- graming and the binary systems, the class took a field trip to the interior building of the Bonne- ville Power Administration to see computers and I.B.M. machines in operation.
