English Department The twenty-two members of the English de- partment, including the teachers of speech, drama, and journalism, have a common goal: to develop the writing, speaking, and listening abil- ities of Madison Students. In realizing the goal, they were aided by the staff of the Resource Center, who offered assistance to all departments but especially to the English and Social studies departments. English teachers sent their stu- dents tothe Resource Center, which has now completed its second year of operation, to study reference materials, to read supplementary books, and to make up tests. ' The courses presented to the students in English were patterned on a plan worked out by a city-wide curriculum committee. All Madison students studied the history and development of the English language, as well as its dialects. r. Track Coach Social Studies And Combined Classes Students discuss the causes of the Civil War during Mr. WiitaIa's sixth period class. Social studies teachers chose either a deduc- tive or an inductive approach to teaching: using a standard textbook, they amplified its contents through lectures and class discussion or employ- ing a number of original sources, they presented material for students to analyze, compare, and contrast. An example of ,the latter method was western civilization, a course offered to qualified seniors. It acquainted students with works in literature, ethics, and political philospohy, some of which were Dante's Divine Comedy, Aris- totle's Politics, Hobbes' Leviathan, and several of Shakespeare's historical plays. Close reading and discussion of these classics taught western civ. students to correlate political and moral thought with literature. Team teaching was initiated in freshmen and junior classes. Participating teachers planned their lessons jointly, and presented films, lect- ures, and recordings to their combined class sec- tions, thus permitting better use of time and talent.
