English Department The twenty-two members of the English de- partment, including the teachers of speech, drama, and journalism, have a common goal: to develop the writing, speaking, and listening abil- ities of Madison Students. In realizing the goal, they were aided by the staff of the Resource Center, who offered assistance to all departments but especially to the English and Social studies departments. English teachers sent their stu- dents tothe Resource Center, which has now completed its second year of operation, to study reference materials, to read supplementary books, and to make up tests. ' The courses presented to the students in English were patterned on a plan worked out by a city-wide curriculum committee. All Madison students studied the history and development of the English language, as well as its dialects. r.
