For the most part a four-year sequence is offered. However, since some stu- dents start language study in elementary school, we do have several enrolled as fifth-year students. Approxi- mately one-third of the student body is studying one or more foreign languages. With the aid of the language laboratory, tape re- corders and record players, stress is placed on an audio- lingual approach to language learning. Films, recordings of poetry and plays, and a wide selection of library books all serve as enrichment mater- ial. From time to time native speakers in the community serve as resource people in some of the languages. Teachers as well as students, continue the process of learning and several in the department have traveled and studied in one or more countries that speak their respective language.
