12-an Mr. Constantine Kanelis English Mrs, Karma Hughes Miss Josephine Kelly English English All Students The aims of the English department are to improve reading, writing, speaking and listening. Provisions for individual differences are also in- cluded in a sequential course to include the main kinds of literature each year in narrative, dramatic and poetic. The study of at least one novel each year as well as the study of one Shakespearean play are also included. A sequential plan for poetry, from the narrative to the lyric poems, both American and British, is provided in this program. There is also a successive program in the study of language, its nature and development. A maior empha- sis is put upon sentence structure in the ninth grade. This program includes a study of the dictionary in the tenth, dialect in the eleventh, and the history of the ,.. English language in the twelfth. Composition has major emphasis: ninth grade, basic sentence structure in the context of a paragraph, tenth, additional sentence skills and a focus on paragraph structure, eleventh and twelfth, organization and de- velopment of longer papers with attention to more com- plex problems of rhetoric. Speech has a definite order: ninth grade, forms of discussion . . . panel, symposium, forum, tenth, speech analysis, eleventh and twelfth, oral interpretation.
