2 I I E During his last few days at Madison, Mr. Smith sits down to write a message to the Student Body. r. Smith's Farewell Message In retrospect, the past 42 years in public education seem like a few pleasant moments. The events of each year passed more rapidly than those of the preceding one, and the home stretch is well under way. Time between September and June iust evaporates into the past. All years have been pleasant, but the greatest thrill and the great- est challenge came with the assignment to organize and open Madison High Schpol in the fall of 1957. Focus was fixed on one obiective: To make Madison a school of high academic standards and achievements and to make it stand out in a community of fine schools. This has been accomplished in five short years through the loyal cooperation of a picked administrative and teaching staff. Community pride in the school and strong backing and support from the P.T.A. and Dads' Club made the job easier. An experience that comes to few people is the opportunity to be with and work with many thousands of boys and girls. My name has gone on approximately 10,000 diplomas. Many of these graduates have now assumed their places in the professional, business, civic and political life of their respective communities, and many of their sons and daughters are now in school or have already graduated. It has been a great satisfaction to have recommended and endorsed applications for scholarships the total of which is well over SI ,500,000. While my active school days are over, I will be no stranger to Madi- son in the future. Special events at the school will find me in attendance, as I have no intention of isolating myself from those wonderful people who helped make my career a success. In terminating a strenuous but satisfying career I have no words of wisdom or advice except to say that after 42 years of working closely with boys and girls I subscribe wholeheartedly to the statement, May We Have Faith in the Rising Generation, I,l.:z,.f..ff4
