DEDICATED TO A Man of Varied Accomplishments Stephen E. Smith was born in Pullman, Washington, in the year 1896. He was raised in Montana and graduated from Billings High School. He then attended Montana State College until World War I, when he ioined the United States Navy. Mr. Smith started his hitch in the Navy as a musician and when he was discharged he was a radio operator. After the war Mr. Smith fnick-named Red j returned to Mon- tana State. He graduated in 1920. In 1921, Steve married his college sweetheart, Hutoka Miller Qher name is Indian and means peaceful lodge by a river. She and only one other person have this beautiful name.l They have three daughters: Virginia, Patricia and Marion. The girls are married now and Mr. and Mrs. Smith are the proud grandparents of eight grandchilden. During World War ll, Mr. Smith received two certificates of merit. One was for his outstanding work in training men for the United States Forest Services. The second was for selling over 51,000,000 in War Bonds. Mr. Smith took his graduate work at Oregon College of Education. He also took graduate work at such well known schools as Stanford, Columbia University, University of Colorado and Oregon State. Our retiring principal is a man of varied activities. In the past he has served as President of the Portland High School Principals, President of the Multnomah County Principal's Association, President of the Multnomah County Teacher's Association, and Vice President of the Portland Council of Churches. He is very active in his church, Westmin- ster Presbyterian. Mr. Smith also is a member of the Royal Rosarians, Che was Prime Minister in 19571, a member of the American Legion and active in the Kiwanis Club. He has served as a grade school Princi- pal and Principal of Washington High. For the past five years Mr. Smith has guided the growth of Madison. A few of the duties carried out by Mr. Smith were interpreting the poli- cies of Madison, carrying out the responsibilities of the entire operations for Madison, greeting visitors and carrying out public relations and general supervision of school finances. After retirement Mr. Smith plans to reside in Portland. In the near future Mr. and Mrs. Smith plan to rent a trailer and travel through the southwestern United States. They definitely plan a freighter trip to the Orient or Caribbean. Mr. Smith's ambition for the future is to teach Western American history, a hobby subject, in a local grade school. For all the things Mr. Smith has done for Modison and education the Federalist staff, speaking for the student body, would like to express its deep appreciation to him.
