THE LAVENDER EYED TICRESS Fall had finallv come to stay Early that morning the sun had dawned and it had been the start of a beautiful day the kind of dav that made one feel good 1ns1de as 1f he d1dnt have a worry or a care ln the world But not Mike Stuart he was mad real mad' He loved the woods and had lived near them most of his life and early th1s morning he had gone hunting He knew every inch of these majestxc woods whlch he consxdered his home but for two years he hadnt gotten a deer And this he could not understand lt was beyond his conceptlon and It just didnt make sense His friends had laughed at him and provoked and angered him so that 1n a fit of anger he had made a heavy bet that he could get his deer before the day was over As he walked effortlessly and noiselesslv through the leaves he made a str1k mg plcture He was tall dark and handsome and would somedav be the answer to a pretty malden s prayer But if Mike had heard this his hot reply would have been something like No fussy l1ttle female IS gomg to have a place in my life For almost su: hours now he had been scoutmg the woods his eyes ever watchful for that first slight movement which would betray a deer which had lost 1ts cautlousness for a moment All of 1 sudden he froze in his tracks Just ahead of him 1n a small clearmg stood a 16 po1nt stag a beautiful stone statue poised for fllght at the first sign of danger The stag was not yet aware of Mike because he happened to be down wind from the deer Slowly Mike rsused his gun and the woods echoed and re echoed w1th the sharp reports of the rifle Too late the stag realized h1s plight and 260 pounds of poised stone fell to the ground while out of the woods ran two figures VVhen Mike reached the deer the other figure was already bendmg over it Startled by his voice the figure gasped and jumped back and Mike looked down 1nto the most beautiful pair of lavender eyes he had ever seen After recovermg her badly shaken composure she lashed angrlly back at him Wlth your deer? Iust what do you thlnk this IS? I happen to have killed this deer and now I mtend to keep him Any objections? 'You bet there are young lady he shot back after recovermg from the shock of facing a glrl especially slnce he didn t have the slightest idea of how to handle her He was acutely aware of an exqulslteness and beauty about her even though she looked like a httle tramp ln her baggy yacket and pants which were about two slzes too blg and little old gray felt hat which almost covered her ears But he soon dlscovered however that she fought l1ke an enraged mother tiger who had just confronted an arch enemy which had endangered the lives of her kittens Durrng a lull m the battle in which they both found they had h1t the stag Mike found h1s arguments not to be standing up qulte so well against hers and his vo1ce seemed to be losmg its masculine superiority For the first time 1n his life M1ke experienced the bitter taste of defeat He had been out foxed out talked out fought and beaten from every pos slble angle and finally the most humiliating of all conqueredl And all the while he was consclous only of a beautlful pair of flashmg lavender eyes Mike lost his bet which added msult to mjury but he had never learned to accept defeat He picked up what was left of his badly shaken ego and climbed right back mto the fight And finally one day several months later he emerged the vlctorl I At least he thinks he did but there IS somebody else who knows dlfferently D A voice calling Honey interrupted his thoughts and brought a smile to his face as he left his comfortable seat by the fireplace to join his httle lavender eyed tlgress Patricia Clark 59 60 K l 4 L I K . , .
