To her horror, iT Turned Too, as if lisfening, buf came no closer. IT was Mr. Healy, wanfing To Talk To her abouf The confesf. As if he were The Prince Charming who had awakened her from This charmed sleep, she seemed again able To move and managed a few coherenf syllables. He remarked Thaf she seemed upseT, buf she could noT Tell him whaf was bofhering her. Affer The Talk aT The dean's house he'd say her imaginafion was overworked. Keeping up a prefense of Talking, she reached The dorm and her room only To find ThaT she was shaking so Thaf she could noT sfand. IT she could have Told someone abouf if, she would have felf much beTTer even Though he would have laughed. Keeping if To herself seemed To magnify iT. Her firsT fear of This Thing had sTruck home and was deeper Than she had guessed. Well, look aT her reacfionl IT was so uTTerly wifhouf reason To go To pieces over such a small Thing, a coincidence, Thaf iT seemed To be an animal fear Thaf she could nof conTrol. Yef she musf confrol if. She mighf see more of These Things. IT she did This every Time she saw one, people would Think her queer. OT course There had been insane arTisTs, buf she wasn'T famous yeT and could nof afford such eccenfricifies. Seeing iT, she should have invesfigafed iT insfead of running away. She should keep The upper hand in These Things. ThaT nighf she had nighfmares abouf iT. She would Turn a corner and There if was. Anofher corner, There iT was. Anofher and anofher. There if was, always in fronf of her befween her and her goal. She woke up panfing as Though she had been running for a long Time. The nexf few days she was nervous and cross. When Mr. Healy offered a few crificisms on her new canvas, she blew up so complefely Thaf he suspended her from class for Two weeks. Thaf meanf she'd never be able To finish a good canvas in Time To enfer if in The confesf. And all because of her non- sensically childish fear of Thaf sfrange shadow. She was defermined Thaf if would nof defeaf her. She began a course in psychology and sfudied The hidden fears unTil she felT she undersfood hers com- plefely and could overcome The shadow if if again appeared. Affer Thaf, she began doing beT'I'er and beffer work. lf was Too bad Thaf she had losf her self-conTrol before The confesf, buf she could enTer again nexf year. She was driving home. Driving home in spring recess of her senior year To Tell her moTher ThaT she had won The scholarship in arf. She was Terribly happy. She didn'T Think she'd ever been so happy, noT even The Time she had gone To her firsf formal iusf affer The braces had come off, and The boy had shyly said she looked awful nice! IT was raining, really misfing. Buf she liked driving in The rain even if iT was slippery because iT was so cosy in The car. The radio was playing. IT was a song Thaf she had heard aT one of The dances and if Took her back. She was awakened from her musings by The piercing lighf in fronf of The STaTe Police Headquarfers. Blinding her momenfarily, if was soon behind her. She noficed a car coming wifhouf lighfs and dimmed her own. Why The driver musf be crazy! He's way over on my side. IT came sfeadily nearer and nearer. Franfically she puf on The brakes. The car swerved, skidding on The glassy, rain-swepf surface. For an insfanf she saw The oufline of The driver in The oncoming car, crouched infenfly over The wheel, peering ouT af her. Too lafe she saw him vanish. Too lafe she realized if was only The shadow of her own car casf on The fog by The lighf behind her. The car crashed sickeningly. Pafsy Shumaker al. at sf. af. af.
