It was a season which saw the 'Tour Horsemen, Dave Coogan, Don Rausch, Snookie Meslar, and Lou Gang ride rough-shod over powerful VVharton, Verona, and Millburn aggregationsg battle Glen Ridge and Boonton to scoreless tiesg and concede defeat to Bernardsville, Caldwell, Summit, and Madison's arch rival Morristown. No greater team than the one of 1940 ever Wore the Maroon and XVhite and never Were there more valiant players on the Dodger's squad. The eleven which Wrought a new era in athletics had Dave Coogan. ADISON basketball fans have long since become too sophisticated to believe that Dodger teams. year in and year out. are superior to the finest quintets in the county. but they feel and rightly so, that the 1941 team was one of the best squads in Dodger annals. Though not showing the power to outclass such fives as Glen Ridge. Dover. Summit. Caldwell, Chatham and the Dodgers' arch rival Morris- town. the 15141 team. paced by the outstanding performances of Carmen Piccolo. Ferdinand Groh. Bremner Cole. James Cramer and Anthony Masiello, concluded a victorious campaign. Carmen Piccolo, lanky Dodger forward. who received All-County com- mendation for his playing. led his team-mates in scoring with 12365 points. ISS of which were netted in Conference play. The Glen Ridge game. the finale of the none-too-happy season was the concluding game for the Maroon and VVhite squad. Though faced with defeat time and again. the 1941 basketball team showed a spirit of sports- manship and perseverance for which Madison High School athletic teams are renowned. MQAQN HE lil-10 Chatham baseball game was the turning point for a Madison team which previously had never lived up to its true potentialities. Five previous contests were forgotten as the Dodger nine flared up: bouncing back from defeat, to win seven games in less than a fortnight. Remarkable as the season was. it was a vivid one in Dodger annals. Out- classed by a powerful Millburn aggregation. the Dodgers came back fast in their second game to defeat a highly touted Glen Ridge conclave but subsequently succumbed to Summit. Caldwell, and Madison's arch rival Morristown. Then. in a resounding reversal of form the Dodgers re- bounded to give Chatham. Glen Ridge, Summit, Millburn and W'estHeld smashing setbacks. There were many momentous spectacles in that season-take for in- stance. Ferdie Groh's triple in the dying minutes of the Chatham fray that gleaned the winning run . . . Pete Courtney's outstanding perform- ance in the defeat by Morristown when he accounted for the Dodgers' two tallies , . . the overtime game at Glen Ridge when Carmen Piccolo led a breath-taking ninth inning rally to outscore the Essex County school. These are only a few memories, the Whole list is too long. S xve. the Class ot' '4l. began last spring to formulate the plans for our Alembic we realized that because of the efforts of previous Senior classes. the word Alembic had become symbolic of a neces- sarily excellent yearbook. lt was our duty to carry on this tradition to the best possible advantage: therefore, in .lune of 1940, a staff meeting was called for all those inter- ested in working on the literary staff of the lit-tl Alembic . VVith Miss Ackerman as faculty adviser. the following statf was chosen: Editor-in-chief, Beatrice Miller: Associate Editor, llichard XVolff3 Literary Editor. Carol Jackson: Feature Editor, Na- dine Proctor: Activities Editor. Imogen Emery: Sports Editors. .lohn Rae and Mar- garet Cole. Contributors to the various departments were: Beatrice Dart. Ken Smith. Mary Sutherland. Johanna Sodano. Katherine Hoefeld. Viola Hasenauer. Ruth Collins. Emily Allacco. XVhitney Chase, and Arlene Henderson. A dearth of funds caused the Alembic staff to consider seriously several proposals by which the cost of the book could be slightly deci'eased. NVhen the popular appeal of candid snapshots was discussed at a senior class meeting. it was definitely decided to make these pictures the foundation of the book. Consequently, a photography staff consisting of Imogen Emery. Bruce Nett. and Leonard Abraham. immediately set about taking candids of both varsity and Ulm ALM., 194 grrls sports classroom scenes and all school act1v1t1es Thls all t1me task of tak mg enough p1ctures to feature them 1n the book contmued unt11 March of thls year To all the accompllshments of Calldld snaps are ev1dent By mformally plcturlng school l1fe not only the tI'1dltlOllS but xlso mnox 1 tlons Ill Machson I-hgh can be observed These extra prges of Cdlldld snaps hue definltely ll'lLlG'lbGd the xalue of the year book to the unclercllssmen as vxell as to the Senlors The Alemblc busmess staff under the dnec t1on of Mr Masrello competentlv handleu the sale ot the book The staff was organ IZQC1 as follows Lo Busmess managers Donald Rausch and Robert Lusardl Photography George SCIHIO and Ken bmlth Clrculatlon Managers Glorla Palmer and Charles Dafeldecker Adx ertlsmg Manager Marjorle Romano Clrculatlon Staff Jo hanna bodano Ida Granata Antolnette Granata Jessle Bozz1 Orulle Meslar Mar JOFIC Bo1tel and Frances Plccolo Much credlt 1S also due to the Alemblc typlsts Mary Delmomco Betty Marshall Johanna Souano and Henr1etta Seldler Wlthout the1r work th1s book could not have been completed We the staff of the 1941 Alemblc express our gratltude and appreclatlon to MISS Ackerman M1 Vlaslello and all those vs hose names we may have omltted who gave both t1me and effort to help us produce a good yearbook ' 1 1 1 . . . .' . 1 , 'c . Don't bite Dot S both M edison High and its nuturillg community grow, new and improved insti- tutions are replacing the ancient methods of maintaining a healthful town and improv- ing the general well-being of the citizens. Such an institution is the Madison Dental Clinic which was established this year to make a complete survey of Madison pupils in order to determine What type of work was necessary. Those students unable to bear the expenses of private dental treatment are to be examined again and treated by one of the dentists in the employ of the Board. For many years, this dental clinic was a topic of discussion for both the Board of Educa- tion and the Parent Teachers Association. However, it vvasn't until this year that the plan became a reality. The entire success of the venture is due to the untiring efforts of both groups and the co-operation of school authorities. The Borough Council also de- serves a Word of commendation for the part it played in laying the fundamental founda- tion for the clinic. Without the aid of this body, the exploit could hardly have been successful. The voluntary services of five local dentists completed the general scheme of Work For a period of several Weeks, the survey was carried on in all of Madisons schools. Each pupil underwent a thorough dental examination at the hands of one of the dentists. The results of the check-up were compiled and tabulated in order that specific in- formation concerning dental attention could be readily available. As this was the first survey of its type to be held in Madison, the need for dental work was found to be very apparent: nevertheless, its sponsors are extremely elated over the primary success of the project. Naturally, all who aided can not be congratulated and praised for their effort. ln general, therefore. we give thanks to the fine dentists- Dr. McBride, Dr, Van de W'ater, Dr. Oliva, Dr. Barry, Dr. Hart, the Parent Teachers Association, the Board of Education, the Borough Council, school authorities, parents. and the students for fine co-operation on a venture which is slated for success, 'l he Vlieerettes l,z1 l+'ilet,te. our inziscot Skinny and Fat being frzuned lizili for our sitle lJnn't get your feet wet! llrilcl everytliing Soltlx A1ne1'it'z1n!
