TVk OawM ot imAt too This mural by George Sasser, a Madison Heights graduate, is a pageant of the past and present. It represents man ' s educational development up to the present and expresses the strain of modern living. It implies that man stands on the threshold of self destruction but offers hope for the future in the dedi cation of the doctor and nurse. Dear Father, help me to realize that these are my years of opportunity. Help me to know that this is the portion of my life set aside for growing in wisdom as well as in stature, a time to develop responsibility. Grant me the power to face up to the best that you have given me, to find my talents and to develop them and employ them that they may do the most in Thy service. Open my eyes that I may marvel at the beauty of Thy creation, that the wonders of Thy universe may find responsiveness in me. When work proves difficult, give me courage to rise to its challenge. Let me sense Thy nearness, standing ready to supply me with the extra power I need to see it to completion. Ruby A. Jones Reprinted from GUIDE POST

As our school grows, it changes, and this past year has marked many firsts. Our 258 seniors are the first graduating class to have completed all six years of academic and social training at Madison. Coming with our biggest-ever freshman class is our first foreign exchange student. A yearbook queen, new vocal music groups, and lab assistants in the biology classes are starting new traditions. Loved traditions from past years are being continued and strengthened. The band won even higher honors at the State Fair. Homecoming and the Prom were as fabulous as ever. In the academic field the standards of excellence exemplified by the fifth year math course continue to inspire us to harder study. In striving to live up to the Madison Heights educational challenge, over 70% of our students continue to seek further knowledge by enrolling in college. Many apply their learning in the business world. But all remember the achievements, the enjoyment of learning, the attained wealth in friend¬ ships--the measurements of education. Madison Heights is finding its place among the best high schools in the state by coming up to the highest stand¬ ards set in all the. 3

The measure of education--Does it stretch the dimensions of a person’s mind? Does it compel him to look beyond his own narrow in¬ terests to the concerns of the whole world? Does it give him a desire for knowledge and the wish to discover truth? Does it make him sensitive to life—aware of its meaning for him and understanding of its meaning for others? Does it teach him basic principles on which to build his further education? Does it instill in him the value of honest work as well as the excitement of creative thought? Do es it give him the courage and honesty to stand above the crowd, to dare to be himself? 5
