Jeanne talks with Mr. Collier about Holland. AFS’ers Promote Program, Bring ( Jeanne at one of her many speaking en¬ gagements--this one, a group of students at Highland. in I960 the Student.Council Committee for a For¬ eign Exchange Stu d en t recommended the American Field Service program as the best means of broaden¬ ing the outlook of Madison Heights students and of par¬ ticipating in th e effort to improve international good will. After several months of hard work, an AFS chap¬ ter was formed, Anderson High joined the program, families were found to provide homes for the first two students for a year, and the necessary money was raised. A group of ten students from Madison Heights and Anderson gave speeches before nearly every local civic organization, telling them about the program and asking for their support. This year, as a result of united student and com¬ munity effort, Madison Heights has Jeanne Korteweg from Dordtrecht, the Netherlands, as a member of its Senior Class. Jeanne has participated in many school activities, was chosen Homecoming Queen, and has won many, many friends with her bubbling personality and warm smile. Because the American Field Service program has proved to be such a big success this year, Highland is joining the program next year. The three schools are sponsoring AFS week, and Madison Heights and Ander¬ son are hoping to be able to send one student apiece overseas this summer.

Door Is Always Open. Decisions for the future become more urgent as a student approaches graduation. The Counseling Department door is always open to the student seeking the answers to his problems. Mrs. Davis, Mr. Dietzen, and Mr. Wimmer administer NEDT, PSAT aptitude, intelligence, and personality tests. These counselors discuss with stu¬ dents the everpressing problem of choosing a career and help arrange for the Junior Guidance Day program. Booklets about vocations are available in the counseling office and catalogues from the colleges may be borrowed for a two weekperiod. The counselors help stu¬ dents with their choice of a college and arrange for the College Night program for juniors and seniors. The counselors also provide a valuable service by helping many students each day with school, social, and personal problems. Mr. Wimmer counsels Jan Palmer on her choices of college.
