Opportunities Because of the rising need for trained architects, mechanics, and carpenters, there are many boys entering the vocational shop classes. Here they learn the proper use of machines and the products a machine can manufacture. They formulate their ideas on paper and carry them out by manual labor, working on such projects as the home they are building this year for Mr. Smith. Exciting careers in the business world create within business students the desire to learn and improve their skills. One of the most important tasks is studying the tech¬ niques of bridging the gap between the pro¬ ducer and the consumer by tactful corre¬ spondence. The opportunity to operate var¬ ious office machines also challenges many students in advanced typing classes. Typing students strive for accuracy during a timed writing. Miss Raines explains the use of the comptometer to Bev Friend as Judy Apgar practices calculation. Pam Carmack takes shorthand dictation in prep¬ aration for a career as a stenographer. 9

Practical Preparation for Later Tom Patterson checks the diameter of the shaft which will be made into lathe centers. In drafting class James Watson and Roger Denny draw the top view of a machine part. In vocational building trades the boys have worked this year on Mr. Smith ' s new home. 8

A complicated advanced Algebra problem takes the thinking of Bill Bards ley and David Gaddis. Hard Study The fascinating worlds of science and mathematics may come alive for a student as he finally performs his experiment just right in the chem lab, as he watches the wonder of a heart still beating in a newly - dissected animal, or as he grasps for the first time a new concept in geometry. He may be inspired to make one of the fields of science or mathematics his career, but in any field he will profit from a new under¬ standing of the world around him. At Madison Heights, science and math¬ ematics teaching endeavors to keep pace with current scientific developments and strives to give each student a solid founda¬ tion of basic principles which will prepare him for further study. Mr. Wann helps Kay Davis with a difficult math, assign¬ ment. In biology class Jim Doenges and Susie Tappan, lab assistant, explore the organs of a cat.
