As our school grows, it changes, and this past year has marked many firsts. Our 258 seniors are the first graduating class to have completed all six years of academic and social training at Madison. Coming with our biggest-ever freshman class is our first foreign exchange student. A yearbook queen, new vocal music groups, and lab assistants in the biology classes are starting new traditions. Loved traditions from past years are being continued and strengthened. The band won even higher honors at the State Fair. Homecoming and the Prom were as fabulous as ever. In the academic field the standards of excellence exemplified by the fifth year math course continue to inspire us to harder study. In striving to live up to the Madison Heights educational challenge, over 70% of our students continue to seek further knowledge by enrolling in college. Many apply their learning in the business world. But all remember the achievements, the enjoyment of learning, the attained wealth in friend¬ ships--the measurements of education. Madison Heights is finding its place among the best high schools in the state by coming up to the highest stand¬ ards set in all the. 3 TVk OawM ot imAt too This mural by George Sasser, a Madison Heights graduate, is a pageant of the past and present. It represents man ' s educational development up to the present and expresses the strain of modern living. It implies that man stands on the threshold of self destruction but offers hope for the future in the dedi cation of the doctor and nurse. Dear Father, help me to realize that these are my years of opportunity. Help me to know that this is the portion of my life set aside for growing in wisdom as well as in stature, a time to develop responsibility. Grant me the power to face up to the best that you have given me, to find my talents and to develop them and employ them that they may do the most in Thy service. Open my eyes that I may marvel at the beauty of Thy creation, that the wonders of Thy universe may find responsiveness in me. When work proves difficult, give me courage to rise to its challenge. Let me sense Thy nearness, standing ready to supply me with the extra power I need to see it to completion. Ruby A. Jones Reprinted from GUIDE POST The measure of education--Does it stretch the dimensions of a person’s mind? Does it compel him to look beyond his own narrow in¬ terests to the concerns of the whole world? Does it give him a desire for knowledge and the wish to discover truth? Does it make him sensitive to life—aware of its meaning for him and understanding of its meaning for others? Does it teach him basic principles on which to build his further education? Does it instill in him the value of honest work as well as the excitement of creative thought? Do es it give him the courage and honesty to stand above the crowd, to dare to be himself? 5 A Yakmtkk (ok Living... A per son’s own yardstick for living is the product of his com¬ plete education. All of his experiences throughout life go into the shaping of his guiding principles and standards. The basic limits of this yardstick are formed in the home by his parents and family. The church has a far-reaching influence on the lives of many. Some conform to the standards of their friends. But finally, each person, if he is to find himself, must find his personal values, alone. 6 Practical Preparation for Later Tom Patterson checks the diameter of the shaft which will be made into lathe centers. In drafting class James Watson and Roger Denny draw the top view of a machine part. In vocational building trades the boys have worked this year on Mr. Smith ' s new home. 8 Opportunities Because of the rising need for trained architects, mechanics, and carpenters, there are many boys entering the vocational shop classes. Here they learn the proper use of machines and the products a machine can manufacture. They formulate their ideas on paper and carry them out by manual labor, working on such projects as the home they are building this year for Mr. Smith. Exciting careers in the business world create within business students the desire to learn and improve their skills. One of the most important tasks is studying the tech¬ niques of bridging the gap between the pro¬ ducer and the consumer by tactful corre¬ spondence. The opportunity to operate var¬ ious office machines also challenges many students in advanced typing classes. Typing students strive for accuracy during a timed writing. Miss Raines explains the use of the comptometer to Bev Friend as Judy Apgar practices calculation. Pam Carmack takes shorthand dictation in prep¬ aration for a career as a stenographer. 9 A complicated advanced Algebra problem takes the thinking of Bill Bards ley and David Gaddis. Hard Study The fascinating worlds of science and mathematics may come alive for a student as he finally performs his experiment just right in the chem lab, as he watches the wonder of a heart still beating in a newly - dissected animal, or as he grasps for the first time a new concept in geometry. He may be inspired to make one of the fields of science or mathematics his career, but in any field he will profit from a new under¬ standing of the world around him. At Madison Heights, science and math¬ ematics teaching endeavors to keep pace with current scientific developments and strives to give each student a solid founda¬ tion of basic principles which will prepare him for further study. Mr. Wann helps Kay Davis with a difficult math, assign¬ ment. In biology class Jim Doenges and Susie Tappan, lab assistant, explore the organs of a cat. Rewards the Serious Science Student Chemistry experiments are a challenge to perform and under¬ stand for Bill Steimer, Dennis Poore, Jama Doenges, Mike Mundy, Jan Palmer, and Joyce Ehle. Working with equilibrium forces in physics class, Jim Chitty, Rosalind Windsor, Ann Skinner, and Eric Krall apply Newton ' s Laws of Universal Gravitation. Horizons Mrs. Jones brings her classes appreciation of some of the world ' s greatest literature. Speech class gives students the change to express their opinions on many subjects. Here Sandy Morris talks about her pet peeve. Parlez-vousfranpais? Mrs. Harp explains the conjunction of a regular er verb, to speak, to her beginning French class. The history of Rome is only one of the fascinating chapters in world history. jsfegggS - ■- • Mm Stretch To Include the Whole World Besides teaching the basic principles of our Constitutional Republic, Mr. Hunt presents his own philosophy of life. Mr. McLain controls a laugh as Nancy Michaels experiments with a part of the Stanford- Binet Intelligence test in psychology class. Through the Language and Social Studies Departments, students explore many phases of the whole world of man’s experience. In their history and government courses they develop an understanding of the influences and events that shaped our Western civilization, an appreciation of our American heritage, an interest in foreign cultures, and a concern for the problems of our times. The literature courses bring them the ideas of great men and an understanding of people beyond the range of their own experience. Speech and English classes teach them to use their own language effectively, while foreign language study gives them an insight into the structure of language and a further knowledge of other peoples. 13 Students Complete Programs with a Freshman girls begin the required physical education class with calisthenics, but they also do more interesting things such as bowling and swimming. Madison Heights offers to its students a wide choice of non-academic subjects. The gravel parking lot equipped with flags is a miniature obstacle course for the drivers. Here they develop skills in con¬ trolling a car and learn good driving habits. The excitement of the State Fair for the band and the County Choral Festival for the choir, the exhilaration of the Spring Festival, the bond of fellowship, and the actual experi¬ ence obtained--all contribute to the students’ enjoyment and knowledge of the music field. Whatever their individual purpose, the subjects afford students an opportunity to broaden the dimensions of their education. Boys ' physical education classes benefit from outdoor exercise as well as indoor activities. Drivers ' Education offers a challenge to Betty Lightfoot and Steffani Spilman Variety of Subjects The Girls Glee Club trains for later participation in Concert Choir. Under the able direction of Mr. Taylor, Dennis Moller studies an unusual rhythm on the French horn. Guidance Department AsBev Friend plans to attend Anderson College next fall, she and her parents tour the college library. Students seek advancement through tests offered by the Guidance Department. Ruth Ann Behrens visited Sears Roebuck on Junior Guidance Day. She is being shown through the office by Mrs. Little. Door Is Always Open. Decisions for the future become more urgent as a student approaches graduation. The Counseling Department door is always open to the student seeking the answers to his problems. Mrs. Davis, Mr. Dietzen, and Mr. Wimmer administer NEDT, PSAT aptitude, intelligence, and personality tests. These counselors discuss with stu¬ dents the everpressing problem of choosing a career and help arrange for the Junior Guidance Day program. Booklets about vocations are available in the counseling office and catalogues from the colleges may be borrowed for a two weekperiod. The counselors help stu¬ dents with their choice of a college and arrange for the College Night program for juniors and seniors. The counselors also provide a valuable service by helping many students each day with school, social, and personal problems. Mr. Wimmer counsels Jan Palmer on her choices of college. MATH t J H ttfttf Jack Henricks has trouble deciding on his path to the future when his plans are indefinite for next Satur¬ day. 17 Jeanne talks with Mr. Collier about Holland. AFS’ers Promote Program, Bring ( Jeanne at one of her many speaking en¬ gagements--this one, a group of students at Highland. in I960 the Student.Council Committee for a For¬ eign Exchange Stu d en t recommended the American Field Service program as the best means of broaden¬ ing the outlook of Madison Heights students and of par¬ ticipating in th e effort to improve international good will. After several months of hard work, an AFS chap¬ ter was formed, Anderson High joined the program, families were found to provide homes for the first two students for a year, and the necessary money was raised. A group of ten students from Madison Heights and Anderson gave speeches before nearly every local civic organization, telling them about the program and asking for their support. This year, as a result of united student and com¬ munity effort, Madison Heights has Jeanne Korteweg from Dordtrecht, the Netherlands, as a member of its Senior Class. Jeanne has participated in many school activities, was chosen Homecoming Queen, and has won many, many friends with her bubbling personality and warm smile. Because the American Field Service program has proved to be such a big success this year, Highland is joining the program next year. The three schools are sponsoring AFS week, and Madison Heights and Ander¬ son are hoping to be able to send one student apiece overseas this summer. The fountain, glittering with a rain¬ bow of colors, the old-fashioned band- box, with a canopy and white picket fence, and the sidewalk cafe -- all helped to complete the picturesque setting of Paris. While the Debonaires play ed such numbers as I Love Paris and April in Paris , an array of elegant formals swished through the park. When the clock tolled eleven, Sandy McCormick ascended the red-carpeted steps to be crowned the 1962 Prom Queen by Lucky Deck, Junior Class President. Attendants: Pam Carmack and Ann Bayer Lovely Jeanne Korteweg, our foreign exchange student from the Netherlands, was chosen 1961 Homecoming Queen. Rain 26 Threatens Reign of Homecoming Queen The homecoming queen candidates and their escorts await the announcement of the winner. Left to right are Anita Miller, sophomore, Jeanne Korteweg, senior, Joe Wheat, Co-Captain, Pam Carmack, junior, and Becky Kuch, freshman. With the coming of fall, came the excitement of the annual Homecoming festivities. After weeks of preparation, hopes for the parade were almost dashed when it rained all day on Friday, but at the last moment the rain stopped and the floats came out from under their tarps. The bit¬ ing wind caused a few mishaps, but the thirty-two entries made the best parade in the history of Madison Heights. In the bitter cold at the half¬ time of the mud-plagued football game, Joe Wheat, co-captain of the team crowned Jeanne Korte- weg as the 1961 Homecoming Queen. First Yearbook Queen Chosen This year the 1962 Treasure Chest staff initiated a new tra¬ dition at Madison Heights by sponsoring their yearbook-queen contest. The 1962 Yearbook Queen reigned over the soc-hop following the Warren Central football g a m e . Each candidate wore a corsage of white carna¬ tions, and the queen received a bouquet of American Beauty roses. The fourteen homerooms with the highest percentages of annual sales nominated the candi¬ dates, and the twelve hundred stu¬ dents who bought annuals voted for the queen. The annual sales, the year¬ book-queen contest, and the soc- hop were all a great success; and the Annual Staff hopes to continue this new tradition in future years. The week b ef o r e the sectional, which is the climax of the basketball season, is known as Red and Black Week. All loyal fans wear red and black and support the team by participating in early morning pep ses¬ sions. On Monday morning the Pirate mas¬ cot crowned Anita Miller and Eric Krall as Miss Scarlet and Mr. Black. Our school spirit was exemplified in the many original displays that various organizations put up in the lobbies. With a pirate clock the Sen¬ ior Class won first place in the display con¬ test. The motor-propelled pirate ducked in and out of the clock, and the hands pointed to victory and the Pirates. Wednesday afternoon the student body assembled in the gym for the sectional pep session. About twelve home rooms entered walking floats. Home room 89 entered one of the most original floats. Wearing paper mache head and appropriate costumes, the students dressed up as the opposing teams. Just as they entered the gym, the pirate shot a gun and the heads fell off. Then the clean¬ up crew came along with huge brooms and pushed the heads off the floor. The student body backed the team 100 per cent and was disappointed when they lost the first game to St. Mary’s by a score of 42-41. 31 Convos and Pep Sessions Boosted The jazz drummer of the Dutton Trio Percussion Group gave a stimulating performance. When I tell you I want to see you, I mean NOW, Mister! I mean jump! Understand? Seniors Present “Mr. Roberts,” Enjoy CAST MISTER ROBERTS is a story of the Navy. The main purpose of it centers on the extra¬ curricular activities of a dozen men im¬ mersed in discontent and boredom; there¬ fore, by hating and making war on the only tangible object creating this frustration-- the captain--they relieve their discontent. Since they cannot directly and personally attack this enemy of theirs, they assault the scrawny palm tree which he potted and placed outside his door, watering it each day as if he were performing a religious rite. The men have as much joy and release in destroying the palm tree as they would normally get from torpedoeing a Japanese destroyer. Director. Student Director.. . . . Sandie Morris Chief Johnson. Brushing her teeth at the last minute, Lynne Seulean some¬ times felt that time was catching up with her. 36 For the Teenager The TEEN GUIDE was a carefully collected book of suggestions on current teenage behavior. The twist, a new dimension in dance, swept the nation (and the world). We hear they were even doing it at the White House! Our modes of transportation were different, but they got us there--with a lot of fun into the bargain. 37 AP Wirephoto AP Wirephoto A view of the Brandenburg Gate from the British sector of West Berlin. Interests to the World Outside The new Delco Remy office building. One of the many types of fallout shelters. A few typical views of downtown Anderson. 1961-1962 was a school year that saw many momentous events. The communists threw up a wall in Berlin, cutting off the East Germans’ last avenue of escape to the West. President Kennedy made a speech announcing an arms build-up that helped trigger a rash of fall-out shelter building. In February classes were interrupted while the whole nation watched John Glenn be¬ come America’s first man in orbit. Stu¬ dents interested in world affairs attended the Model United Nations at Anderson Col¬ lege. There, they discussed the U. N. ' s role in helping the many new, underde¬ veloped countries. Anderson was the setting of our high school lives, and we watched it grow. The Methodist Church, yet to be rebuilt, a new Delco Remy office building, and some down¬ town face-lifting--these were signs of the times. 39 THE DIMENSION is organizations. Whether in flying snow or blazing sun, some organization is sure to be busy working. Loyal membership in a school organization has always meant a great deal to students. They meet new people and learn to work with them. They develop their talents and explore new interests. They serve the school or win recognition for them¬ selves. And maybe more important, they have fun. Participation in school organizations has broadened the dimensions of their lives and given their educations greater value. Student Council Leadership The Student Council is the backbone of the stu¬ dent body. Through Madison Height’s system of representative democracy in the Student Council, each student has the chance to make suggestions for the betterment of the school. He may make a sug¬ gestion to his home room representative, place a suggestion in the suggestion box in the book store, or present his idea at a Council meeting. The Student Council exists for the sole purpose of serving the students and the school. It has been given a great deal of power by the administration and can be a very effective organ of student govern¬ ment if the students support it. STUDENT COUNCIL: ROW 1: R. Sears, J. A. F. S., Homecoming Are This year the Student Council has been very active. In the fall it put on the open house, giving the parents a chance to meet the teachers. The Council planned the Homecoming festivities and supervised the float contest. Several of the Student Council members attended the S. C. convention to discuss school problems and get new ideas. During the winter the Council was responsible for the Christmas decorations and the competition between home rooms for the best decorated door. Mr. Hunt’s door ’’Santa’s Workshop” was the winner. S.C. sponsored Coed Week--when the girl must pay--and planned the Red and Black Week celebrations. It also helped in the organizing of the American Field Service Student Committee and the raising of AFS funds. Throughout the year Student Council was in charge of leading the Pledge of Allegiance, running all student elec¬ tions, revising its own Constitution, organizing the college bulletins in the counselling office, and initiating many pro¬ grams to help students. Student Council topped off the year with a successful and beautifully decorated spring dance. TOP: Girls decorate home room door. CENTER: Mr. Uplinger’s room won second prize. The band held a place of honor at Ball State Band competition because it won first place the previous year. While most of the student body is home on summer vacation, the loyal band members are out marching in the hot sun. Their perfection of formation comes from constant practice. Not only in the summer but all through the school year, the band practices to give us peppier pep sessions and great half-time shows. To make this story most effective, the annual staff strives for complete picture coverage of activities and organizations in school, informative write¬ ups and picture captions, interesting lay¬ outs, and eye-catching headlines. The staff does much research to produce a better annual. This is the first year that a Mad¬ ison Height’s editor has attended the In¬ diana University High School Journalism Institute for yearbooks. To obtain a bigger and better TREAS¬ URE CHEST of features, staff members spent long hours of hard work on the pre¬ paration of the book. They often left lunch¬ es untouched, gave up noon get-togethers, and sometimes avoided Friday and Satur¬ day night dates, especially at deadline time. It is the staff’s hope that in presenting Dimensions in Learning, it has achieved a better and more informative record of the events of the past year. Certainly they have learned a great deal in the dimen¬ sion of working with people. Julie Turnquist, top, and Jan Jones show that an annual editor’s work is never done. An enthusiastic subscription drive, sparked by a Big Boy contest, more than doubled the number of this year ' s subscribers over last year ' s. More news, pictures, and features swelled the traditional four or six page paper to several eight or even ten-page issues. Our school paper increased tremen¬ dously in student popularity this year, a fact confirmed by the huge sales volume among non-subscribers, both in senior high and junior high. Many new ideas, already in formulation, promise to make the fourth year of the JOLLY ROGER another great one. Here the beginning members were instructed in the rules and principal moves of the game, and the more experienced members broadened their knowledge by putting into practice what they had already learned. A tournament was held among the members to determine who was the best. A Madison Heights Chess Team which competed against other schools was formed. The MHHS Pep Club consists of sixty active girls who promote school spirit, sportsmanship, and team backing. Members of the Pep Club spend much of their time improving their skill in lettering, establishing new yells, and perfecting new motions for old yells. The Pep Club is the leader at basketball games and at pep sessions. Every morning during Red and Black Week the club members radiate school spirit as their yells ring out through the halls. Their most extensive project this year has been selling Pirate badges with pictures of the basketball team on them. Their most challenging purpose is getting more student back¬ ing at all games and pep sessions. Dick Laird, our mascot, is a symbol of our fighting Pirate Spirit. First they practice in that hot sun to loosen up muscles stiff from summer relaxation and inactivity. Then comes the decision of what to wear--slacks for football and a variety of out¬ fits for basketball. The yell leaders, along with their advisor Mrs. Grantham, have perfected many new yells. The cheer block and the cheerleaders have used these yells to promote the school spirit and to let the other teams know Madison Heights is fighting for victory. As members of the pep sessions committee, the cheerleaders helped present many pep sessions, put up posters, and worked on other activities to promote the games. Any boy may become an usher if he has passing grades and a good character. HAD I SON HE GrHTS USHERS THE DIMENSION is athletics. The high school athletic program benefits the members of the teams, the entire student body, and the community which supports them. The long hours of practice and the tension of the game can give an athlete determination, self-confidence, a cooperative attitude toward teammates, and a sense of good sportsmanship. The coach encourages his team to win, but-- more important--he strives to mold them into a coordinated unit. A student body which sup¬ ports its teams whole-heartedly knows the ex¬ citement of sharing the team ' s effort and feel¬ ing of accomplishment. A community and school which backtheir teams, win or lose, have found the secret of good school spirit--a spirit which will carry over into other school activities. In only his second year at the helm, Mr. Baker, head coach, showed he is building a good, though young, ball club. The opening losses, to Anderson, 52-0, and to Newcastle, 25-12, were at the hands of two of the state’s best teams. The Bucs bounced back with a resounding 25-12 win over cross-town rival Highland. In the El- wood encounter the Bucs staged a great fourth quarter rally, only to fall short 25- 21. The Alexandria Tigers proved they could do no wrong as they rolled up a 14-0 first quarter lead. The Pirates then put on a tre¬ mendous defensive effort, and the final score read 21-0. The undefeated Tigers from Hagerstown provides quite a thriller for the annual Dad’s Day game. With only seconds remaining the Tigers pushed across a touch¬ down for a 21-14 victory. When the Bucs tied into the Howe Hornets from Indianapolis, they exhibited to all Homecoming fans a very exciting and bruising game, which ended in a 6-6 deadlock. In the Warren Central con¬ test a Central touchdown, in the last few sec¬ onds, gave the Warriors a 14-12 win. In the final game at Arlington in Indian¬ apolis, the Pirates exploded into an impres¬ sive 39-0 victory. In building for the immediate future, coach Paul Bradford put an emphasis on youth. The inexperience of the team along with the toughest basketball schedule in school history, did not produce a winning record during the 1961-62 cage season. The record doesn’t indicate the valuable expe¬ rience picked up by the team. They won three of their last five ball games and lost many last quarter decisions during the year. A few of the losses were at the hands of sectional winning teams such as: Muncie Central, Anderson, and Noblesville; also during sectional play the Bucs dropped a one-point contest to Madison County Cham¬ pions, St. Marys. Two of our wins were over cross-town rival Highland and sectional winner, Shelbyville, both games going into overtime. The many close decisions lost through inexperience will begin to pay off in the com¬ ing season. The Pirate cindermen downed five regular season opponents while losing to only two. The Jones boys also placed second in the New Castle Invitational, third in the Nobles- ville Relays, and third in the Sectional. Outstanding performances were turned in by hurdler Mike Doyle and middle d is tan c e man Tim Porter, both of whom qualified for the regional meet. More than any other dimension of our education--more than the books, the classes, or the activities--the people have deter¬ mined the scope and value of our learning experience, and it is they we will remember. Dedicated teachers have in¬ spired us to probe new interests and to exercise fully our highest capabilities. Good friends have shown us the mean¬ ing of true friendship. All our acquaintances have in some way added to our understanding of people. Formations The administration of our high school is of prime importance in developing and maintaining the educational policies of the Anderson Township Schools. The County Superintendent, is the high¬ est authority on all county school admini¬ stration. The Trustee and Advisory Board select a principal to serve as the head of the school who, in turn, assists in the se¬ lection of the Vice- Principal, Dean of Boys, Dean of Girls, Department Heads, and Staff. The Principal, with the aid of his assis¬ tants, makes the school program, builds individual schedules, advises and assigns the teachers, and represents the school with its patrons and the community. What would we do without our nurse, secretaries, cooks, and custodians? Mrs. Morris, Mrs. Upshaw, and Mrs. Herron are always busy whether it is a regular or spur of the moment job. Their knowledge of the procedure of Madison Heights makes them indispensable. A cut finger, a cold, and the occasional need of an aspirin are only a few of the rea¬ sons students visit Mrs. Lightfoot. The mad dash from fourth period class, the line down the hall, and the crowded cafeteria exemplify the importance of the cooks. The custodians also perform a valuable service in being responsible for the clean¬ ing and maintenance of the building. A big thanks goes to these people for their part in the smooth operation of Madison Heights. 97 Our teachers ' success is not measured in a percentage of A’s and B’s or the num¬ ber of people who pass their tests, but rather what the student retained that bene¬ fits him in the future. A good teacher instills the patriotism, courtesy, determination, and logic with which the student forms his opinions and begins to mold his own individuality. Even with a teacher ' s responsibilities, they still find time to listen to our pro¬ blems. Cooks prepare for dinner for 2300. ROW 1 - Henry McLain - Social Studies, Senior Class. During the Berlin crisis, nuclear testing, and the emergence of new na¬ tions, they have applied to colleges and for jobs, taken scholarship tests, and searched for self¬ understanding. In the time out from the normal round of classes, government tests, and retri¬ bution , they have entered enthusiastically into those activities which are distinctively a part of their senior year. They have worn their senior cords, sold concessions at the fo otball games, slaved on floats and displays, presented the Senior Class play, and enjoyed their special moments of fun--the Senior Christmas Dance and Senior Week activities. As graduation nears, the class of ' 62 can say with pride that theirs is one of the best classes in Madison Heights history. Seniors fed the hungry spectators on freezing football nights. Marilyn Filbrandt helped swell the class treasury by selling nearly 500 MHHS license plates. Looking back on our high school days, we remember excitement and fun and confusion and the pangs of growing up. High school has held many things for us: our classes throughout the four years--strug- gles with English comp., dangling modifiers, and parallel constructions, the efforts to re¬ member the facts and their importance, from the Pyramid of Khufu to the framing of the Constitution and the Second World War,- ' ‘“and why corresponding parts of congruent poly¬ gons are equal, the valences of -CIO 3 and New¬ ton’s laws of motion, the mysteries of short¬ hand and how to make your fingers go those sixty words a minute . . . those special teach¬ ers . . . all our school activities, those we’ve led and those in which we ' ve participated . . . the everyday life of school--eating in the cafe¬ teria or the bleachers, roaming the halls dur¬ ing homeroom, studying in the library, being with friends . . . those special times--the restless holiday atmosphere before Christmas, the football and basketball games, the soc- hops, the Prom, Homecoming, Sectional time, spring, the day the annuals came out, and the last day of school, . . . being seniors at last • • . All this is behind us now. Left with the old worn-out textbooks is childhood and gained is a certain measure of maturity. We have chosen our colleges, our vocational schools, or our careers. We are stepping out into the world with high hopes and the determination to succeed. The dimensions of our lives have broadened in the last four years and we are ready to accept our new responsibilities, op¬ portunities, and challenges. Juniors Experience An Exciting Year Junior Executive Council attend business session. Junior Class Officers, President-Lucky Deck, Secre- tary-Bonnie Coyner, Vice-President-Mandy Welborn, Treasurer-Margaret Bales. The juniors participated in a variety of activities as they prepared themselves for their final high school year. From that breath-taking moment when they launched their homecoming rocket to win second prize until they crowned the queen at the Junior- Senior Prom, the juniors never had a dull mo¬ ment. Many hard-working students turned out to sell concessions, to work on the Red and Black Week display, to help with the annual Junior Class Play, and to plan the Prom. The Juniors are also proud that from their class came the first students from Madison Heights to apply to go overseas as exchange students. With the junior year past and new poise and confidence gained, they eagerly anticipate their golden senior year. 119 Juniors take second place at home coming. When the display of class rings arrived, a throng of utterly swooning” sophomores gathered around the showcase. What seemed like an eternity of waiting followed the final choice of a ring, but at last in the spring, the Class of ' 64 could display their treasured rings--the marks of upperclassmen. The choice of class colors also produced much indecision as the sophomores tried to visualize the many color combinations on class sweaters and jackets, senior day attire, and caps and gowns. They met new friends and used their new-found talent in music, athletics, social activities, and classwork. After the first hectic weeks they became ori¬ ented to MHHS life. They found that they en¬ joyed the high school world of unceasing ac¬ tivity. They will always remember the events of the past year because these events marked the beginning of another phase of their lives. Through their relationships with high school teachers and upperclassmen they began to develop knowledge and experience. With great expectations they are looking forward to the unlimited possibilities which loom before them as they continue their high school years.
