They reigned over the festivities dur¬ ing Scarlet and Black Week. SCARLET The Junior Class float, one of many displayed during Scar¬ let and Black Week, tooktop honors along with two other floats. Shipley out races lone defender for easy bucket. AND BLACK Let It Snow—When a p ow e r failure blacked out the Madison Heights gym during the Sectional, Some of the cagers passed the time with a game of checkers. When one thinks back to the sectional of 1961, he may think of excitement, en¬ thusiasm, disappointment, sportsman¬ ship, power f ai lu r e , or snow. Every one of these things played an important role at one time or another to the stu¬ dents and players of M. H. The excitement was portrayed dur¬ ing Red and Black Week with the colorful floats and spirited pep sessions. The enthusiasm took place in the Frankton game, won by the Pi r at e s 68-67. The disappointment followed in the loss to Elwood 80-76. Sportsmanship was shown by the players and students thr¬ oughout the sectional. The unexpected snowfall brought on power failure and one of the most spirited pep sessions ever witnessed in school history. The snow also left many people stranded in the gym for the night. Even though the Bucs weren ' t victorious, it will go down as one of the best sectionals yet. The job of rebuilding the team was left up to Bob Baker, a new coach from Royerton. The Bucs started the season with a hard fought battle against heavily favored Anderson. The next game was also lost to New Castle, one of the N. C. C. threats. In the third game the Pirates lost a last-second decision to an inspired Highland team. After these first three defeats, the Pirate fans began to lose interest in the team. , The squad then suffered consecutive defeats at the hands of Elwood, Alex., Noblesville, Indianapolis Howe, and Warren Central. This left only one final game with Greenfield. The experience of previous defeats made determination to win high among the mem¬ bers of the squad. Anderson 20 M. The victory was provided by Don Shipley’s jump-shot with 3 seconds re¬ maining. In the next two contests, the Bear¬ cats and the Indians racked up impressive victories. The Pirates bounced back to snatch two in row over highly favored No- blesville, and over Highland. The latter win was again provided by a last second shot from Shipley. Alexandria and Lebanon proved too much for the Bucs as they romped to easy wins. The Pirates, evidently disturbed over the losses, upset an undefeated New Castle team 63-61. The next victim was the Frank- ton Eagles to the tune of 74-69. The Blue Devils of Shortridge enj oy ed one of their better nights as they won 71-47. In the next game the Pendleton Irish came out on the short end as the Bucs won 64-63. The fol¬ lowing six gamds were lost to Markleville, Shelbyville, Crawfordsville, Lapel, Manual, and Mancie Burris. In the last home game the heavily favored North Central team found the Pir¬ ates to be too much for them as they lost 75-65. The season ' s finale went to Elwood 74-60. Highland fans were saddened; Shipley had done it again! m ' Shipley scores again Come around this way Shields displays the form which made him the team ' s second leading scorer. The varsity was led by Ed Prather with a mark of 15 wins, 1 loss, and a tie. Next in line was Jack Henricks, beaten only once while crushing 8 opponents. Tom Sanford, wrestl¬ ing heavyweight, received the trophy for the most pins. Placing for Madison Heights in the Sec¬ tional Meet were Tom Sanford and Joe Wheat with seconds. They were followed by Ed Prather and Gene Little placing third, and Jerry Bragg getting a fourth. The reserve team, directed by Ed Coraz- zi and Fred Lamb, went through their season undefeated with a mark of 9-0. A surprise standout was freshman Terry Dean Busby, who broke the school record for the mile and a half. Although five lettermen will be lost by gradua¬ tion, things look just as bright for the next year. Jim Jones and Marvin Gordon-- Cross-country coaches. The fleet-footed Bucs of Madison Heights, coached by Jim Jones, racked up an impressive record of six wins against only one defeat in regularly scheduled meets. The record, though one of the best in school history, could have been better if several lettermen had not received injuries at the start of the season, which hampered their performance in the succeeding meets. We list here just a few of these people: Russell Forkner--Elite Studio Jolly Roger Staff--Mrs. Ruby Jones Art Department - Mandy Wellborn Jerry Wire English Department--Mrs. Simmoms Anderson Newspapers Coaching Staff THIS IS MADISON HEIGHTS.. Certainly sportsmanship, courtesy and fair play are part of it, but Madison Heights involves much more than this. It is many things; it is the fun of watching the M Club rise for one man at a high point in the game; it’s the symmetry and grace of the cheerleaders in their bright sweaters as they invoke ’’Good Luck Team”; it’s the pert movements of the Height Steppers; It ' s that quick gasp that ripples through an audience as the lights aim and the curtain rises on a class or Thespian play; it ' s the thrill of joining in’’The Star Spangled Banner” at the beginning of each varsity game as the band strikes the opening chords; It ' s the beauty of the presentation of colors; it ' s the familiarity of Mr. Collier ' s or Mr. Redding ' s Your attention, please”; it ' s the flutter of excitement in the staff room when the Friday edition of the Jolly Roger” is hot off the press; it ' sthose days of autographing the beautiful new Treasure Chest that has been so long in taking shape; it ' s the inspiration of the Christmas trans¬ parencies each year in the front windows and the glory of the lighted trees in the halls; it ' s the thrill of watching the crown¬ ing of the Homecoming Queen; it ' s that glow of satisfaction a teacher feels; it ' s the elation that flashed through the student body and the rooting section when the team takes to the floor or field; it ' s that in¬ describable feeling when the measured beat of Pomp and Circumstance” for the last time precedes the changing of the tas¬ sel on the mortarboard. It is many things. But whatever it is, it deserves our pride and love.
