The 1960 TREASURE fgHATfJ 7 % , C5t -aSSggSsi r H r v J Ā t j n W : Published by the students of MADISON HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL Anderson, Indiana foreword Our Treasure Chest--a wealth of growing traditions with each class. When we look back upon our school, perhaps years from now, most of all we will remember the thrill of each new year and each new class. That is the reason we, the annual staff, have based your annual on the growth of our new traditions. Although our school is a mere four years old, we feel that it has already accomplished a tremendous undertaking--that of making our school a better place in which to learn. This task can be fulfilled only by a growing and changing Madison Heights endeavoring to meet your needs and desires. We believe that this annual of 1960 will convey to you a true picture of your classes, your traditions, and your Madison Heights . The students of this class have established traditions which have set a precedent for underclassmen to follow. This enterprising class, however, has not been able to attain these standards unaided. It has been led forward by its officers and wisely advised by parents and teachers alike. It is with great pride and admiration that we--the Treasure Chest Staffādedicate this annual to the out¬ standing Class of 1960. Tim Barker, past president, and Dan Imel, president, dis¬ cuss the accomplish- ments of the class which strives to give to the school the best it has. The Lawsons, favorite man and wife team in Madison Heights, exemplify the teacher-parent combination which leads to a better understanding between faculty and students. This traditional relation¬ ship has spurred the Senior Class to higher goals and achievements. Academic Excellence... It is only fitting that the aca¬ demic leaders should open the Aca¬ demic Section. These students have maintained a nearly perfect record from the freshman through the senior years; the valedictorians each earned straight A semester averages while the salutatorians earned all A ' s and five B ' s . Their hard, conscientious, and time-consuming efforts, however, will reward them more fully in the future than do the titles which they receive here. To this council, the student may bring problems he wants solved which would otherwise be forgotten. Madison Heights is fortunate to have such a tremendous Council. Although the Council is only four years old, it is firmly established with many ac¬ complishments behind it. Thanks to the administration, the Council has been given much power with which to work. Student Council uses many props to brighten the halls in appropriate seasons. The Student Council ' s main objective is to provide activities for the student body. The Council is in charge of all soc- hops, school decorations, convocations and programs. During the course of the 1959-60 school year, the student body has enjoyed soc-hops, school decorations at Christmas, and several interesting and informative convocations, in¬ cluding a personal appearance of Tony Marvin. All of these activities have one common denominator--that of making Madison Heights High School a better place to live, work, and learn. Through his ability to play football, Nolan Reed brought great fame to Madison Heights and to himself when he was selected by both major newspaper polls as a member of the Indiana prep all-state pigskin team. Nolan richly deserved this honor as he was undoubtedly the most versatile gridder in the state. This 6 ' 6 , 220 pound end was also selected honorary captain and most valuable player by his teammates. 75 Ted Arnold Donn Bonner Dave Brown Bill Bryant The Pirates opened the football season by tackling the Anderson Indians. Nolan Reed scored on a 22 yard touchdown pass from Don Lutton and kicked the extra point. After being down 20 points at the half, the Pirates out-scored the N.C.C. power from New Castle 25 to 20 in the final two stanzas. Richard Pine scored two touchdowns on runs of 39 and 13 yards. Don Lutton sneaked over from the one and heaved an aerial to Nolan Reed for the Buc ' s other touchdown. Our huge Buc line ground the willing Highland forward wall into submission in the first Pirate v i cto ry of the young season. Fleet-footed Richard Pine scampered for three six pointers on jaunts of 32, 57, and 2 yards. Big Ted Arnold caught a touchdown pass and ran a kick-off back through the entire Highland team for 78 yards and another Buc touchdown. Quick-thinking quarterback Don Lutton raced 74 yards to paydirt and fired another Lutton-to-Reed special to end the scoring. Reed converted three times for the victors. The Elwood Panthers spoiled the Madison Heights Homecoming by tallying touchdowns in three of four quarters. Richard Pine rammed across from the one for the Pirate ' s only marker. After playing Warren Central on even terms the first half, the Pirates were sur¬ prised by a 20 point fourth quarter splurge and fell to their opponent 26 to 0. Don Lutton Steve Olsen Richard Pine Fred Porter John Budd Larry Dotson Dennis Fasone Larry Grinstead Although the Pirates had the edge in statistics, the Nobiesvilie Millers capitilized on five Madison Heights tumbles to overcome the Bucs 32-13. A Lutton-to-Reed aerial and Richard Pine ' s 5 yard sprint were good for Madison Heights touchdowns. The Pirates played an inspired game against the strong Hornets, but like many other of the Hornets ' opponents, they got stung. All of Madisons ' touchdowns were the results of passes. Reed scored two, one a 78 yard play with Lutton on the other end, and a 10 yarder from Mike Mundy. A Lutton- to-Pine pass closed the night ' s pointmaking. Tom Sanford George Sasser Richard Pine ' s 1 foot plunge with 15 seconds left gave the Pirates a hard fought victory over the favored Alexandria Tigers. Pine also scored in the first 15 seconds as he raced back 83 yards with the opening kick¬ off. Half-back, George Sasser, also tallied for the Bucs. The Pirates closed out the season with an impressive victory over the Greenfield Tigers. A feature of the game was Nolan Reed ' s 38 yard field goal, which was a fitting climax to his prep grid career. Touchdowns were scored by Richard Pine, who tallied number 11 and 12, and for the sixth time Lutton hit Reed for a Pirate touchdown. Although the sectional crown eluded our boys again this year, the season was one of thrilling triumphs and splendid school spirit. Our senior studded crew fell victim only five times while forcing nineteen foes to walk the plank . The highlight of the season were: 1. The addition of more hardware to our growning trophy case as Coach Bradford ' s charges took the County Tourney honors. 2. The invasion of Butler Fieldhouse and the resounding triumph over Short- ridge. 3. The heartbreaking loss to Manual in what may have been the best game played by the team all season. 4. The overwhelming conquest of Lebanon. untimely death of popular young coach, Jack Cooper. A graduate of Muncie Central High School and Ball State Teachers College, Mr. Cooper was in his second year of teaching at Madison Heights. His duties were assistant varsity football coach, head wrestling coach, reserve baseball coach, and physical education and driver education teacher. Coach Cooper embodied the qualities we honor--devotion to his family and dedication to his chosen profession. All who have been in contact with him have profited by that as¬ sociation. Madison Heights is a better school for his impressive tenure here. 139 Judex Amos, Lowell Edwin 53,92,95 Arnold, Robert Donald 95 Arnold, Ted Norman 53,74,76,91,95,80,72 Ashby, Carolyn Lee 56,95 Ashton, Clarence Lee 95 Bardsley, Jane Ann 11,33,46,50,95 Barker, Timothv Fay 4.5,95 Basey, Sharon Rose 95 Bathauer, Ken Dale 95 Bauner, Jerry Lane 95 Beamer, William David 40,41,96 Bell, Karl 46,96 Bender, aul Arther 50,96 Bevelhimer, John 33.50.96 Bhalla, Arun K. 45,46,52,59,60,96 Black, Jill Barbara 55,60,96 Boring, Carolyn Kay 96 Bosley, Gary Lee 96 Boyer, Janice Kay 50,56,96,24 Boyes, Penny Kaye 42,50,51,96 Breaks, Michael 97 Brogden, Joanna 36,44,97 Bronnenberg, Robert 58,97 Brooks, Don Edward 97 Brooks, Martha Ann 52,56,60,97 Brown, Alice June 97 Brown, David Michael 33,53,74,76,91,97,81,72 Brown, Donald Dean 97 Brown, Donna Jean 49,60,97 Brown, Mary Alice 49,97 Brown, Rosalie 33,98 Bucci, Gary Ralph 98 Budd, John Gilbert 33,74,77,98,85 Burke, Leanne 56,98 Burns, Betty Lucille 98 Burris, Edward Clark 98 Bush, Linda Kaye 50,56,59,98 Campbell, Jeanne Ellen 50,59,98 Campbell, Judy 56,98 Campbell, Mary Ann 98 Campbell, Tommy Webster 99 Carlisle, Bonita Sue 99 Carmack, James Clyde 99 Carmack, Sandra Kay 42,50,99 Carr, Karen Lynn 99 Carroll, Patricia Ann 99 Chandler, Robert 99 Chapin, Clariece Darlene 99 Combs, William Edward 43,99 Cook, Duane Walter 99 Cook, Ronald Lee 100 Cook, Victor Lee 100 Cook, William Larry 100 Cooley, James Arthur 100,71 Copeland, Rose Marie 40,43,56,100 Cox, Harry J. 100 Cox, Robert Gene 100 Craig, Bonnie Kathleen 39,42,48,50,100 Crim, Barbara Dell 100 Crosley, Judith Darlene 43,56,100 Dailey, David Lee 60,100 Darlington, Jerilyn Joyce 36,49,101 Detienne, Edward Lee 74,101 Dew, Pat Kay 47,56,59,101 DeWitt, Kathleen M 101 Dilts, Betty Jo 56,101 Dotson, Larry Kent 53,74,77,92,101,85 Earley, Ann Patrice 101 Edmonson, Kenny 101 Edmundson, Roberta 33,42,101,24,27 Ehle, Marsha Ann 39,40,102 Ehrhart, Charles Richard 37,43,102 Eidson, Michael Lee 102 Ellis, Mary Frances 102 England, Alice Jane 44,102 Etchison, Janet Mae 52,102 Evans, William 33,43,102 Fasone, Dennis Jay 46,53,74,77,102,64,65 Ferguson, Barbara Jo 7,102 Ferris, Jeraldine Marie 56,102 Fisher, Douglas Arthur 45,58,60,103 Flanagan, John Albert 5,33,103 Franklin, Harry Lee 40,103 Fraser, Shirley Ann 5,44,50,56,59,103 Fraumann, Sharon Ruth 42,47,59,103,28 Friend, James Ronald 33,37,103 Friend, Judith Karen 11,50,51,103,24 Gaither, Edward Charles 92,103 Geiger, James L. 103 Gilmore, Elizabeth Ann 11,48,50,lu3,24 Glazer, Beverly Ann 33,54,58,60,104 Gold, Lowell Charles 104 Gooding, Holly 42,48,58,60;104 Goul.
