Although this is just the second year at Madison Heights, the coaches have worked hard and have led us to many wonderful victories. Last fall the Sport Parade began with football and cross country. Football was very ably coach- ed by Mr. Wayne Gruber, assisted by Mr. Kenneth LaRue. Mr . James Jones was the coach of the c r o s s country team, and a very fine coach was he. November came , and with the basketball seas on, a new c rop of coaches appeared. Mr. Paul Bradford began work with the varsity, with Mr. il COACHES Mr. LaRue, Mr . Gruber, Mr. Horevay, Mr. Lallathin, Mr. Bradford, Mr. Jones, Mr. Gordon. Marvin Gordon as an assistant. Mr. Gordon also coached the reserves. But that isn't all. There are als o Junior High coaches. The ninth grade was coached by Mr. Jones, the eighth grade by Mr. John Horevay, and the seventh grade by Mr. Bernard Lallathin. D uring th e winter months, we acquired an interest in wrestling. The wrestling squad was coached by Mr. LaRue. Then came spr ing , with golf and track. Mr. Gordon wa s the coach of the golf team, and Mr. Gruber, assisted by Mr. LaRue, was in charge of the track squad. Many thanks to our competent coaches! This is the pep session be- fore the sectional. The walk- ing float shown was put on by Concert Choir. The theme was i Hail to our Pirate King . Just look at that school spirit! The team was under the able direction of head coach, Wayne Gruber, and the assistant coach, Kenneth LaRue. The fir st game of the season was with the strong Panthers of North Central. Although our unexperienced P i r a t e s seemed to lose ground throughout the game , it was necessary to note the tightening of our Pirate defense the second halfwhich held the rugged Panthers to two touch- downs. Final score: North Central 403 Madison Heights 0. Itwas a black September night when our small band of Pir ate s treked to New Castle to meet the mighty Trojans of the North Central Con- ference. Our Pir ate s began to march the ball down the field and made many scoring threats only to be turned back by funibles and miscues. The much bigg e r Trojans finally won out over our Pirates by a score of 39 to O. The Hagerstown team scored early in the game against our Pirates and it looked as if it would be another bad night. Hagerstown began to move again, but there to stop them was our Pirate for- ward wall. Time afte r time, all through the ga me , our linemen would crash through to turn their would-be gains into long losses. Then the Pirates began their own drive and marched the length of the field to score. Another rally by the Pirates la t e r in the game fell short just as the clock ran out. Final: Hagerstown 13: Madison Heights 6. A state-ranked Noblesville met our Pirates in the next game. N o ble s ville , classifiedas the 108 number one offensive team in the state, overran our Pirates 48 to O. The Highlanders scored twice in the first half of their game with us and our blood-thirsty Pirates sought revenge in the second half. The Pi rate s broke out from the kickoff and scored tw ice in five minutes. The Highlanders were stopped cold at every attempt to move our rugged line and our Pirate backfield continually made long gains by slashes off tackle, drives through the middle , and end runs. Our mighty Pirates tasted victory for the first time - 34 to 12. The next encounter was with the powerful Wood team oflndianapolis. The bigger Wood team out- classed our Pirates 41 to 0. The Tigers of Alexandria was the next team to fa c e the Pirates. They scored easily but were quickly met by the Pirate line which held strong then on. The Pirates fought back again and again until the game was tied 12 all. A last minute Pirate rally fell short of the goal line, and the Tigers scored with seconds left to play. Tigers 18: Pirates 12. The last game with Warren Central was an in- spired game for the Pirates. The Pirate squad played good rough football the whole game through and deservingly came up witha victory by a score of Z7 to 12. The Piratesfinished the season with a two-win six -loss record, which is highly commenda ble for a first-year football team. They showed steady improvement throughout the season and have much promise for a fine team next year. These young seventh and eighth grade Pirates made a fine s h ow - ing for themselves during the season while marking up a 3 and 3 r e c o r d . They were greatly handicaped in comparison with the teams they played because of little or no experience of the game. The s e br ave young Pirates were also forced to play football in te nn i s shoes instead of football spikes which made their footing very slippery. The team showed very steady improvement throughout the season and captured three of their last four games. This Pirate squad was under the efficient coaching of Mr. I-Iorevay, and was assisted by Mr, Lallathin. The Madison Heights varsity basketball team enjoyeda very successful season this year while compilinga 14 and 6 record. Much of the credit, which this team has earned, should go to our very capable Pirate Mentor, Coach Paul Bradford. The Pirates were off to a fast start this year capturing their first game by a decisive 66 to 53 win over Wilkinson. The next four games of the Pirates campaign were long, bad, nightmares. Failure to hit from the field and free throw line, proved defeat even though our buccaneers were never outclassed. Pirates 43--Zionsville 46g Pirates 52--Windfall 55, Pirates 35--Higmand 393 Pirates 99--North Central 66. Our win hun g r y Pirates again sprang to life upsetting a high -flying Surnmitville team to the tune of 55 to 48. The ta ste of victory was still fresh as our Pirates captured Yorktown 57 to 54. B eing unable to connect at the charity stripe brought the sixth and last defeat to our mighty Pirates. Pirates 54, Pendleton 56. The last nine encounters of the season were in s p i r e d games for both the Pirate followers a s well a s the players. From the mediocre team that started the season, the Pirates grew to an unbeatable clan that was never more to be denied during regular season play. The Pirate s captured Jackson Central 46 to 44 and then immediately copped the Lapel tourney while c oming fr om behind in each contest. Frankton fell before our Pirates 56 to 47 and then Hancock Central was dropped 82 to 51. A str ong Lapel team was surpassed 66 to 57 and St. Marys also collapsed before the Pirates 67 to 64, The Pirates wrapped up the season by d e f e a t in g Winchester 60 to 55 and overtaking Markleville 61 to Sl.
