n$ book belongs to 7 1956 MON ELISON ANNUAL PUBLICATION presented by THE STUDENT BODY of MADISON HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL FOREWORD In this, the 1956 MoNELISON, we, the staff, bring you a “Diary” of your high school years. We hope that in the future this book will serve as a remem- brance of the best years of our lives; the years of work and play with our friends. With these thoughts in mind, we proudly present to you this, our twenty- seventh volume of the MoNELISON. DEDICATION We, the staff of 56, take great pride in dedicating this, the twenty-seventh edition of the MoNELISON, to Miss Margaret B. Miller, who through her patience, understanding, and benignity is most deserving of this honor. SCHOOL BOARD To Our Superintendent and local School Board members: Mr. Fulcher We wish to express our sincere thanks to our Superintendent and to the members of our Local School Board for their devotion in promoting education in our community. The unselfish use of your time and efforts has surely been most rewarding as you have seen so many of our young people grow and develop into worthy and useful citizens. These same sincere efforts have made a real contribution toward making our school life more enjoyable and worthwhile. The members of the Amherst County School Board are Mr. Tyler Fulcher, Superintendent of the Amherst County School Division; Mrs. Bess W. Shrader, Chairman; Mr. Jack F. Thomas, Vice Chairman; Mr. Herbert Camden and Mr. Ashby Wood. ADMINISTRATION If you were to ask a cross section of successful American people why they have been so successful in life, you would determine that industry, perseverance, and faith have been the foundation stones to their great achievement. Industry and perseverance have been the forces that have conquered the vast secrets of the Universe to serve mankind. But these could never have been accomplished without the strong pillar of faith. Each of you can achieve an abiding success in life if you have faith in yourself and in your fellowmen, faith in our country and our way of life, faith in the triumph of good over evil, and faith in God and in a glorious future. Never allow any person or any misfortune to shake your belief in yourself. You may lose your property, your health, your reputation, other people’s confidence, even; but there is always hope for you so long as you keep a firm faith in yourself. If you never lose that, but keep pushing on, the world will, sooner or later, make way for you. With each of you goes my sincere wish for your every success and happiness in life. Sincerely, ALDEN W. We were fortunate to have, as our three leaders, Mrs. McDermott, Mrs. Powell, and Mrs. Sacra. Each one encouraged us when we became downcast. We chose as our class officers Russell Franklin, President: Edna Brown, Vice President; Anne Overstreet, Secretary and Treasurer; and Cary Ogden as our representative to the Student Council. Our class colors were yellow and white with the yellow rose as our class flower. Our motto, “Step by step, we are on our way, gaining knowledge day by day,” kept us striving onward. 1 his, our first year of high school, brought us many new experiences to which we had been looking forward, one of which was the Freshmen Picnic which was enjoyed by all who participated. In our Sophomore year, we were happy to have advanced one more step toward our goal of success. We had as our officers Russell Franklin, President; Harry Taliaferro, Vice President; Anne Overstreet, Secretary and Treasurer; and as our representatives to the Student Council, Cary Ogden and Anne Overstreet. We had red and white as our class colors and the red rose as our class flower. Our motto for the year was Live to Learn; Leam to Live. We had Mrs. Fraley, Miss Miller, and Miss Thompson to guide us on our way. Our Junior year, our third big step, held numerous experiences for us. We started the year by electing the following class officers: President, Russell Franklin; Vice President, Carolyn Lee; Secretary, Anne Overstreet; and Treasurer, Eleanor Lee. We also elected Anne Overstreet, Euwilda Smith, Geraldine Patterson, and Cary Ogden to be our representatives on the Student Council. Live to Learn; Learn to Live was selected as our class motto, with red and white as our class colors and the red rose, our class flower. At Christmas we held our first big event of the year, our annual Christmas Party in the Physical Education Room. Our biggest thrill of the year was the receiving of our Class rings in February. The next big event was the Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance in the Spring. In June we packed our belongings and were off for a day of fun on the Junior-Senior Picnic. Fortunately, we had Mrs. Farmer and Mrs. Stone to guide us through our third big step. Finally, we reached the fourth step and became Seniors. To assist us in this year we were very fortunate in having Mrs. Fraley and Miss McPherson as our class sponsors. Our class officers, who were chosen at the end of our Junior year, were President, Russell Franklin; Vice-President, Cary Ogden; Secretary, Carolyn Lee; and Treasurer, Nancy Gayle Anderson. Our representatives to the Student Council were Cary Ogden, Carolyn Lee, Anne Overstreet, Euwilda Smith, Hunter Kidd, and Roy France. Our motto, Tonight we launch; where shall we anchor? kept us striving forward to reach our goal. Our class colors were red and white with the red rose as our class flower. CAROLYN OGDEN—Carolyn has had some experience and should be a great help to us next year. NANCY FRANKLIN—Nancy will probably see much action next year; she has shown great improvement. 83 BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAM This year the team has done what it was unable to do in three years.
