T H E 1954 MONELISON Bftty Gali.o Good Citizen foreword As we, the staff of the 1954 MONELISON, present this book of golden memories, we hope that it will serve as a remembrance of our dear friends, our work and the “Golden Memories” of the years when life was much easier than we realized. With these thoughts in mind, we feel as though we have reached our goal and we now proudly present to you this, our twenty-fifth edition of the MONELISON. Admmistrq.£ on SiTudeni Body Ad iv itl'es 5 pod A d ve rti sements cp Steps to the Top Because of his unselfishness and thoughtfulness of others, because of the splendid example of good citizenship and able leadership which he has given to our community, and because he served as the editor of the first edition of our beloved “Monelison,” we, the staff, proudly dedicate this, the twenty-fifth volume of our yearbook, to . . . DR. THOMAS JAMES BANTON Our Superintendent Mr. Tyler Fulcher The citizens and youth of Amherst County are exceedingly fortunate to have our beloved former principal, Mr. Tyler Fulcher, Superintendent of the Amherst County School Division. To you, Mr. Fulcher, the members of the Staff say a heartfelt “thank you” for the capable leadership and loyal service so faithfully rendered to the youth of Elon District for more than a decade and wish for you in your new post of duty the greatest possible success. The educational leadership and service which you have given to the citizens of Amherst County constitute a concrete example of the theme of our 1954 edition of “The Monelison,” “Steps To The Top.” School Board The annals of public education record no parallel to the challenges currently facing the educational leaders of our County, State and Nation. Faith, vision, discretion and courage are imperative, if our American way of life is to be perpetuated. Because they possess these qualities to an outstanding degree, the youth of Amherst County confidently entrust their future to Mr. Tyler Fulcher, Superintendent; Mrs. Bess W. Shrader, Chairman; Mr. Jack F. Thomas, Vice Chairman; Mr. Herbert Camden and Mr. Ashby Woods, members of the School Board. jj dm in is ifi a ii n A February 1, 1954 Dear Students, Throughout your four-year high school career, so long, when viewed in prospect by the impatient freshman, and, so short, when seen in retrospect by the more thoughtful senior, you are building the foundation upon which your subsequent success or failure will to a considerable extent be determined. Therefore, I hope that during this golden period, often termed with nostalgic reminiscence by many as “the happiest days of my life,” you are learning and learning well the academic content of your classes, for upon graduation from Madison Heights High School, each of you will enroll in the School of Life, to be graduated only at the end of a life-time. In this School, the teachers are stern; the regulations, inflexible; the assignments, difficult; the tests, frequent, and the examinations, rigid. A good high school record is indicative of a similar record in this Institution of Higher Learning. My young friends, I also hope that you are planting in your hearts and minds the seeds of truth, honesty, responsibility and high standards of thinking and acting which are absolutely essential for even a passing grade in any and all fields of endeavor. Without these requisites, you are like the ship, compass lost and rudder broken, drifting, drifting endlessly. You will recall that the long-range assignment given to the members of each freshman class is that Madison Heights High School will be a better place to live and work after their graduation than it was at the time of their entrance. A school is not, and can never be, any stronger than its student personnel. I charge you to take with you this statement of progress—re-phrased to read—“Wherever I go, will my community be better because I have been a part of it?” If this philosophy is faithfully applied, should you chance to open your ’54 edition of “The Monelison” a score or more years from today and gaze fondly upon your high school photograph, you can tell yourself with pride, “I have fulfilled my obligation to this boy or this girl so eager to climb the ‘Steps To The Top.’ ” With best wishes for success to each and every one of you and a sincere desire to serve you in any and every way possible, I am Cordially yours, Virginia Mitchell, Acting Principal faculty Virginia McPherson Lynchburg College, B.A. History, Mathematics Mary H. Camden, will long be remembered by the faculty and students of Madison Heights High School. Mr. Camden’s most important single objective was a progressive school system and adequate facilities for the youth of Amherst County. To the realization of this objective, he unreservedly devoted his time, his energy and his talents. In the passing of Mr. Camden, the School System has lost an able leader; the youth, an ardent champion; the community, a valuable citizen; the Church, a tireless worker, and the teachers, a personal friend. -do)- SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Presiden t .... Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Winfred Bryant Charles Gillispie ... Patsy Bryant .. . Gene Allen Seniors! There seems to be a special formula for this word; hard work, plus many good times, plus a determination to reach our goal. We’ve reached that goal, too, because we are now seniors. The officers we chose for our class were Winfred Bryant, President; Charles Gillispie, Vice-President; Patsy Bryant, Secretary; and Gene Allen, Treasurer. Those who did a wonderful job of representing us on the Student Council this year are James Morcom, Charles Gillispie, Winfred Bryant, and Shelby Floyd. Our motto is “The elevator to success is not running. Take the stairs.” Our colors are green and white and the gladiolus is our flower. Our sponsors, who have done a wonderful job of guiding us through our senior year, are Miss McPherson and Mrs. Pettyjohn. The first big event of this year was a Christmas party, which everybody enjoyed. In March, we gave our Senior play “Lights Out,” and this was a big success. The highlights of the year were the Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance and the Junior-Senior picnic. A special event of the year was a trip to Washington, D. C. by our Senior Class. This is a memory we will long remember. We, the Senior Class of ’54, would like to wish the very best of luck to the senior classes of M.H.H.S. for many years to come, and may it be as wonderful for you as it has been for us. With this we say “so long” to good old M.H.H.S. -(12)- -Seniors George William Adcock Buck Quiet, handsome, and demure; He'll be a success, we’re all quite sure. F. F. Class f It all started in the September of 1950. We, a group of one hundred and twenty-four Freshmen, began to ascend the steps to greater knowledge. We had as our instructors Mrs. McDermott, Mrs. Arthur, and Mrs. Powell. For our officers we chose Harold Ragland, President; Preston Floyd, Vice-President; Shirley Riley, Secretary and Treasurer; and our class representative to the Student Council. James Morcom. Our motto, “Conduct and courage le«d to success,” helned us to adapt ourselves to the high school routine. The first grouD project that the entire class had to participate in was the annual Freshman picnic. In our Sophomore year our sponsors were Mrs. Fraley. Mrs. East, and Mrs. Glenn. At our first meeting of the year we elected the following officers: President, Winfred Bryant: Vice-President, Jack Pettvjohn: Secretary and Treasurer, Patsy Bryant. Chosen to be our Student Council representative was James Morcom. Our motto. “Vigilance, action, wise counsels—these lead to success,” gave us the incentive to work harder than eve -. As the year before, the entire class went on their yearly picnic, which naturally turned out to be a big success. Our Junior year—outstanding in many resnects—left with us many hapoy memories. Our sDonsors, Mrs. Stone. Mrs. Farmer, and Mrs. Cash contributed much to our enjoyment. Elected at our first meeting were President. Winfred Bryant; Vice-President. Derrel Emerson; Secretary, Kathryn Spencer; and Treasurer, Kenneth Lavne. Our class representatives on the Student Council were Betty Lee Gallo. Carolyn Mclvor. and James Morcom. Chosen for our class motto was “To thine own self be true.” Among our many highlights of the vear were the receiving of our class rings, the attending of the Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance, and our much anticipated Junior-Senior picnic. Finally, our hopes and dreams came true, for we were Seniors. To assist us in our last year, we were fortunate in having Miss McPherson and Mrs. Pettyjohn as our sponsors. Our officers, who were chosen in our Junior year, were President. Winfred Bryant: Vice-President. Charles Gillespie: Secretary. Patsy Bryant; and Treasurer, Gene Allen. Our representatives on the Student Council were Shelby Floyd. James Morcom. Winfred Bryant, and Charles Gilb'soie. After much debate, our motto, “The elevator to success is not running. Take the stairs;” our colors, green and white; and our flower, gladiolus, were decided upon. Our first event of this vear was our Christmas narty, which took nlace in the school library. Next in line came our Senior nlav, “Lights Out,” in March. As an added attraction to o r nrngram, each Senior and our sponsors co-operated fully in making it mwsible lor the entire Senior Class to go to Washington. D. C. Anril hronght our Junior-Senior Banmiet and Dance, and June — last but not least — brought our Junior-Senior picnic. Although all of us have been eager to graduate and start on our own life-time ambitions, we still feel sad at the thought of leaving our friends and high school days behind us. Our program during the year included visiting businesses of interest. During the year, we sponsor hops in which all clubs are invited to attend. We also participated in the “Potato Chip” sale in order to raise money for our club. Last Christmas we chose to help the Janitor at the Y. W. C. A. and at the first of the year we joined another club in having a talent show during Open House Week. As in previous years of our club we tried to keep before us the purpose of the Y. W. C. A., “To build a fellowship of women and girls devoted to the task of realizing in our common lives those ideals of personal and social living to which we are committed by our faith as Christians. In this endeavor we seek to understand Jesus, to show his love for all people, and grow in the knowledge and love of God.” OFFICERS President ........................ Throughout the year, our club plans various activities. This year we entered and participated in the Lynchburg Farm Show, H. A. R. planning and federation meetings which are held bi-annually in the fall and spring, fixed a Thanksgiving box and a Christmas box, sold UNESCO stamps, held an assembly program, served meals to visitors, held open house, and entertained our mothers with a tea. As a member of this organization, each club member is encouraged by its sponsors to carry out the aims and objectives set up for them by the Academy. These objectives are for each individual member to the best of his abil.ty to try to: 1. Encourage the study of science and the spread of scientific knowledge. 2. Respect the integrity and opinions of others in regard to scientific matters. o. Make an effort to understand the scientific method and to apply it to the solution of personal and scientific problems. 4. Study the cause and effect relationships and to apply these to his reasoning and logic. 5. Understand the ideals and standards of this scientific organization and to promote its welfare at any time in a legitimate and dignified manner. Astronomy was chosen as the general topic of study for the year. Club meetings'were held at a regular meeting time with programs given by its members or a guest scientist or speaker. Each member was asked to display his or her interest in the club by choosing a project for the year. These projects, as well as other individual and class projects, were exhibited at our annual Science Fair. This fair was sponsored by the club to stimulate interest in science in our school and to recognize scientific achievement. The club supports with interest and exhibits the regional and state meetings of the Junior Academy. Club members are proud of past achievements of the club. The monetary awards received from winning exhibits and movies have added supplies to our laboratory and teaching aids departments. Pupils of the high school, who show scientific interest and who are willing to abide by the rules and regulations of the club and of the Virginia Junior Academy of Science, are eligible for membership in the club. This may sound like an easy job and just another way to get out of school, but, really, it’s rough going. Miss Mitchell allowed us to have one day and part of another to do this work.
